Currently it's "Best SF of the Year #14", but should be "Best Science Fiction of the Year 14". - Replace the pub note "Stated 1st printing" with what's actually stated on the copyright page.

Deleted variants

Hi Hauck,

Apparently you deleted my 3 Finnish variants I created for Hobitti eli sinne ja takaisin (plus one more for a different Finnish work). Was there any reason to do that (besides showing up on a report maybe)? Due to the delay between when I am creating variants and when a moderator approves them, it may take a day between when I am creating them and when I replace them inside of the works. So can you hold off on these deletions for a few days so I do not need to redo the work again? Annie 23:51, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

You've found the correct reason. IMHO it's better to proceed the other way round, 1) create the "to-be-varianted" title in the publication and 2) link it to the canonical instead of creating a "void" title that shows on our cleanup report. When exploitating the cleanup report daily, there's no way of knowing which are "real" publess titles to be deleted and which are "in-waiting" publess titles that must be kept and which are titles that were passed-over from a previous review. Note that,to this day, you're the first to complain about this, so perhaps should you try the method preconized above. Hauck 06:52, 21 January 2017 (UTC)

Considering that I've done a few hundred of those while cleaning the multi-language report and these are the first deleted ones, I am not that worried. Adding it into the publication will mean 3 edits (add it in one, fix the language in the second, then variant) and the work will be messed up for a while. Considering that it may be a day before I can send the next steps, I would rather risk them being deleted than leave the publication in a mess :) I was just making sure there was no other reason for the deletion. Note that here your arguments are faulty as the addition of a new item will inherit the language of the publication. So it's in both cases a three step process (variant-import-delete vs. add-variant-delete). That's why I preconized the second method. Hauck 10:07, 22 January 2017 (UTC)

I 2nd PV'd http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?317670, and will be updating the listing to take the "#" out of the title (since not on title page), and I'll note that my copy, like yours, has an unclipped DW with no price. I've also got the Gollancz #11, and it has no price on the dust jacket. Just speculating, but the UK experienced very high inflation in the early 1980s, so Gollancz may have used price stickers rather than pre-printed prices on their more expensive hardcovers. Judson Huss Art Book

You rejected a variant submission for artwork inside and on the back cover of this pub. In the past, my experience has been that merging illustrations in one pub will cause one of them to disappear from the list of contents. There was an usual clash (anglo-saxon vs. the rest of the world) about this precise text here because of english locutors that wanted to change the french text to SHORTFICTION because it was such in english translation (due to the documented loss of wordage in the process). My position was (and still is) that the length in the original language is to be retained regardless of the changes brought about by the translation. In this case, it's the english texts that should be corrected just as we list some NOVELS in french (see for example this 264 pages long novella!) as being SHORTFICTION. Yes, this discussion rings a vague bell. This being said, after a brief word count exluding all the blank pages and half pages of the LdP edition, the French text hardly reaches 30,000 words (no more than 124 effective printed pages, 30 lines per page, and an average of 8 words per line). I would be in favour of following house rules here, and forgetting about the "novel" status, just to put and end to this lame situation. Linguist 14:27, 30 January 2017 (UTC).

Don't worry too much about an outburst like this from me. It's just my old egalitarian self that is not very happy when things about what is a community effort are decided without public debate (regardless of how irritating it may become). Even with the best of intentions, such situations may engender a system with diverse "cabals" (for example we had the magazine group that made its own -secret- rules) that is, in the long term, not viable. Thanks for your thanks, they are appeciated as moderator's work (that will likely soon fall on your shoulders) is sometimes a bit gruelling particularly when you're forced to play the bad cop part. Keeping software development aligned with the consensus of the user community is undoubtedly very important. At the same time it's not practical to run every software change by the community. For example, there were 59 patches installed during the first 48 days of 2017, most of them very minor. Discussing each one on the Community Portal would be exceedingly time-consuming. It would also cause "contributor fatigue". Eventually editors would become less likely to discuss higher-profile changes.

The challenge, as I see it, is determining what requires a community discussion and what doesn't. Sometimes I implement an FR which had widespread support at the time it was originally proposed, but it turns out that the consensus has shifted and the results are controversial. Other times I post a proposal which, based on prior discussions, I am 99% sure would be non-controversial, only to find out that there are objections -- see this recent example. I try to err on the side of caution, but sometimes I mess up.

Another thing that we may want to discuss publicly is the general direction of software development. Minor tweaks are all good and well, but there are larger meta-projects like "internationalization" which encompass multiple FRs. It would be good to have a discussion of where we are heading with that. I'll try to post something on the Community Portal later today. Ahasuerus 16:27, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

Herve, if I am going to get you upset, I'd rather do it on something we actually disagree on :) I really do not like people getting people upset... That change was really to help me finish a project faster (a lot of ways to skin this cat - it just happens that I am more effective when I skin this way) and as it is temporary, I did not expect that it will cause any issues. I have no intention of changing any rules behind the scenes - I am just playing the cleanup fairy lately - both for the languages and for the wiki - and just trying to make my life as easy as possible on those so I can get them finished faster. Illustration in June 1993 Asimov's

I believe the credit for the illustration on page 67 of the June 1993 issue of Asimov's as "Alan M. Clark" is incorrect. The illustration is signed "Allen K." which is how Allen Koszowski sometimes signs his work. I'm also not certain that the artwork is related to the story for which it is named. I suspect this is a stock Asimov's tailpiece used to fill space at the end of an item. I've detailed such artwork for Weird Tales, but will give the illustration the name of the issue instead of the name of the story in such cases (as our help pages indicate). I'm making two changes to this issue. There is a minor error where we have the illustration on page 66 listed as on page 64. A larger error is that the "On Books" column and its contained reviews are listed as by Baird Searles whereas the column is credited to Norman Spinrad on the title page. Interior arts question

Hi Herve,

A quick question as you had verified it: Les grandes batailles de l'espace. I am planning to pull all of the now-languageless art apart (and the ones in English), make French variants and rename them properly - so "Colonization: Incident 1 [3]" will become "Planète Déception 1 [3]" (using the title of the translated story that the art belongs to) and varianted into the English record. That's what we had been doing lately in magazines and with translations Do you approve that or would you rather these stay in English or in French but with English names? As they have the same artist, I would think that the last one was a mistake because of the different naming conventions in the two publications (one of them adds numbers regardless of the artist, the other numbers only if the artist is the same) but if you do not mind checking what is on the two pages, I would appreciate it. I see what happened there. In one of the publications, the numbering is counting only inside of an author; in the other is counting inside the work. Polygraff

I noticed you made the Polygraff serialization of "Triplanetary" (Part 1 of 4, Part 2 of 4, Part 3 of 4 and Part 4 of 4) have a variant parent of "Triplanetary", 1948 novel, however, though the Galactic Central Science Fiction Index for Polygraff describes the parts as being from the 1948 edition, it then lists each part as being only chapters 7, 8, 9 and 10 respectively. It seems to me this is probably in error and the more appropriate parent is really the Triplanetary, 1934 serial novel which had been serialized into four parts before (Polygraff's history shows it mostly published new short fiction by relatively unknown authors or older works that are out of copyright).

I think that's where we differ. Most of the PVx verifiers do the verification without taking an 'active' look at the publication and the titles involved, either because they haven't read the book, they just do it because they own the book, or they have read it a long time ago but don't remember the contents exactly (I'm guilty of the first and the last point in many cases). If one keeps a look on the community portal and the PV1s talk page (and their own table of recently altered publications, of course) all should be in pretty good order. It's entered as credited. As usual, it's likely a typo (he signs "C. E."). I've saw this when entrering the magazines but I'm not a thrilled by pseudonymistic links based on spelling proximity. A difference in one letter is not a bibliographical evidence, just a possibility (just for the anecdote, I was in the same school as a guy named Hervé Hauk quite surprising as Hauck/Hauk is in France a very rare patronym). If that were true, I could also have the rest of the name also be in Latin script instead of its printed name. Regarding two yesterday submissions, --logged in My Recent Edits as approved by ChrisJ[1] and approved by Hauck[2]-- it appears to me that the 1920 and 1986 publications have been merged. Can the later publication be restored as I submitted it (the latter submission 3399152)?

I will shorten publication Notes, having learned that Locus1 is the source for that Afterword by Peter Glassman, which library records and Amazon don't mention. (For 1989 At the Back of the North Wind P3267 in the same series, ChrisJ marked Locus1 as source, but no one has done so for 1986 Goblin.) The Locus 1984-1998 bibliography states:

• Goblin, 1986 : "(Morrow/Books of Wonder ... There’s a new afterword by Peter Glassman." (at Locus1 1984-1998)

Changes to verified publications

Hervé - In the past couple of days, you have made several changes to publications where I am a primary verifier without contacting me first. In the future, please contact me before making such changes. There are several problems with the changes you made and I'm going to have to correct some and reverse others. The changes you made appear to be the replacement of review titles with essay titles for nongenre works whether are not those works are eligible for inclusion in the database. I'm sure you are aware that at one time, any title that was reviewed was eligible for inclusion, which is why these titles were entered as reviews in the first place. That's all well and good and yes, they should be replaced by essays. However, you titled the essays as "Review of nongenre <title> by <author>". If you'll check Help:Screen:NewPub#Contents always included, you'll note that we only title the review essays like this, when they are otherwise untitled. Without checking with me, how did you determine that none of the reviews that you were replacing had titles? Some of them, in fact do and I will have to go back and fix those titles. Even when we do use the description instead of a title, I would argue that the the referred to in the help text, would be novel or magazine, and not nongenre. The larger problem is for the reviews of Thomas Harris' The Silence of the Lambs. There is a note on that title record that stating that it is eligible for the database because of it's award nominations. I thought this was a documented policy, but I can only find it as an exception under web publication. However, I recall several discussions with both Mhhutchins and Ahasuerus with the understanding that award winners and nominees are "in". Given that the title record exists, there is no reason to replace a linked review with an essay. I recall that the only reason such essays were suggested review titles would show up on a cleanup report as unlinked. That would not be the case here. Why we would want to prevent users viewing that title record from being able to find where it has been reviewed escapes me. I'm unaware of any policy stating that reviews can only be used for titles that are eligible for inclusion for certain reasons and not others. I'm also unaware of a policy that only allows publications to be added for some eligible titles and not other, as the note on that title indicates. However, it's not an issue that I care enough about to argue, in this case. For the reviews you replaced with essays, I'm going to change them back. For your fist point, I've tried to stick to what I percieved as a kind of (as is usual with us) undocumented standard (IIRC, I do not invent this particular wording). As I was not deleting information (just changing its form) and as the reviews themselves were not titled, I choose the option of not informing every PV (you're the first to complain). Note that, to be frank, It seems that (to my regret but I'll go with the flow) the principle of notifying PVs is no more fashionable today.

For your second point, you're perfectly right, I'm the author of the note as I decided late in the process to keep the record but I've already changed the reviews to essays and didn't think to change them back (I've just done it). Just FYI the whole (I'm cheating here, the was only the preface to Red Dragon that was marked as genre), of the entry of Thomas Harris was made of non-genre texts.

You're evoking the ghost of Mhhutchins, but note it was by trying to emulate what he did that I choose this option. Note also that I'm not agreeing with the concept that (I cite) "several discussions with both Mhhutchins and Ahasuerus" are the correct way to determine our policies.Hauck 07:10, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Removing non-Latin transliterations

Is there some reason for your removal of non-Latin transliterations (such as this submission)? Perhaps I am wrong here but I believe transliterations support more than just romanization as one can transliterate into other scripts like Cyrillic and Japanese kana, etc. Thank you, Uzume 14:55, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

As per Help:

• Populate only if the canonical name is spelled using a non-Latin alphabet/script. If you know the Romanized form of the name, enter it in this field. If there is more than one possible Romanization, click on the Add Transliterated Name button below and enter the other Romanized spellings of the name.

So is this really only for romanizations then (and if so why not label the field to "Romanized Name" instead of the more generic "Transliterated Name") or can I put Cyrillic transliterations of non-Latin canonical author names like those in Japanese? And why is this for romanizations only to being with (issues with the author directory maybe)? Thank you, Uzume 15:28, 24 April 2017 (UTC)
