Destination 3001 translations

Thanks for the feedback. I would like to add some translation information for the Destination 3001 anthology (ed. Silverberg & Chambon) All of the US/English stories are available in English except the Karen Haber (which is forthcoming in an anthology later this year) You would seem to be the ideal moderator for this information. Here are the translations that should be added & linked: Joe Haldeman: Four Short Novels Nancy Kress: My Mother, Dancing Orson Scott Card: Angles same title in English, should be linked Christopher Priest: The Discharge Gregory Benford: The Hydrogen Wall and the only non-English story to be translated into English (that I have found) Jean-Claude Dunyach: Useless Nights RogerSSS 03:10, 10 June 2015 (UTC) RogerSSS

Done. Please note again that you've could have done this yourself by using the "Make This Title a Variant Title or Pseudonymous Work" link and entering the parent title ID in the top box. Hauck 15:11, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Cowley - another query

I get the jist of how to do the interior artwork for these i.e. "Title of Shortfiction" = "Title of Image" with artist and interiorart. But - in some instances the caption of the illustration gives a specific vehicle (similar to those in Spacecraft 2000-2100) eg. page 76 of Starliners the shortfiction is "GMA Transport" and page 78-79 (assume I use page 78 as artwork extends partially over page 78) captions the image as "Consolidated SF604 Porpoise" - is it ok to put "GMA Transport (Consolidated SF604 Porpoise)" as the title of the image ? --Mavmaramis 10:47, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

You're quite your own master here, you're first so you're allowed to choose the name ^_^. Hauck 11:57, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
Ok thanks - not that I'm about to start breathing heavily, wear black and go round blowing up planets. As an aside I did wonder wether the brackets would muck everything up considering they are in the main used for disambiguation. Now where did I put that lightsaber ? --Mavmaramis 12:40, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

Oh Lordy of the Rings

Now here's a tricky one. I have the three individual volumes of this (Fellowship of the Rings, Two Towers, Return of the King) but not as a boxed set but issued with an illustrated card sleeve, all are the Unwin 2nd impression 1974 paperback editions (which typically are not listed). Makes me want to go and chuck the books into the volcano - yeah sacrilidge I know but they are books I will never ever read for a variety of reasons too lengthy to go into here. Your suggestions welcome. --Mavmaramis 08:36, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

In such cases, I tend to enter the individual books, regardless of their package (I mention it in the notes). I read the whole lot once close to 40 years ago. Hauck 10:07, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Mountains of Madness

It is deinately getting close to driving me insane.

List here which includes the one I cloned

BUT then there's this list.

No way of collating these two lists ? - luckily the one I entered is a later edition to the one at the bottom (again with the inconsitant nature of entering publihers).

Definately get two distinct lists of the same book if you click "title reference" under each respective book. --Mavmaramis 12:48, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

In fact it's not the same "book" ISFDB-wise (you'll notice that the title IDs are different) even if they are similarly titled and have (sadly) the same ISBN. Hauck 13:04, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Vance - Planet of Adventure

Replaced cover of this book with full wraparound version. --Mavmaramis 17:40, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Dynostar Menace

Gone and uploaded cover art for the wrong edition again - this being the book. Since my Souvenir Press edition isn't listed I'll add it which will give you tile to revert my blunder. --Mavmaramis 18:47, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Normally corrected. Hauck 19:12, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Same cover

Found the same cover used for "Change the Sky and Other Stories" and "Les doigts du hasard". Can't merge it because the artist isn't known. --Zapp 19:18, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Edd Cartier - Tbe Known and The Unknown

A few days back I added contents for this book but it seems that only the first 40 pages show up in the listing. I noticed due to when I submitted I spotted that I had once again made an INTERORART a SHORTFICTION but sleep was of paramount importance so I edited it at work this morning only to find that particular entry had a blank page number - anyhow what happened to the rest of the content - please don't tell me I have to enter everything after page 40 again - it took me 2 hours to do it the first time. --Mavmaramis 17:04, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

I'm very sorry to have only bad news for you. Your submission likely encountered a technical problem as it appears in a specific "Errored Out Submissions" report here but probably mod-only. Alas, there is, to my knowledge, no way that I can resubmit it. Please don't take this too hard, it's one of the pitfalls of the ISFDB : there are some precise periods (from 14:30 to about 14:40 GMT for example, and less importantly around 10:30 IIRC) where the database is taken out of line, meaning that a submission send at 14:29:55 will likely go wrong. I've been caught myself numerous times and have lost some work this way. The only answer that I found is to send my lenghty submissons in smaller parts. Hauck 17:29, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
There are not enough symbols on my keyboard to mask the expletives I would like to shout right about now. I'll get round to adding the missing content at some point - I tend to do my editing in the evenings after 18:00 not the afternoons. --Mavmaramis 17:38, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Another anomaly

Cover art for this book is exactly the same as for this book but are credited to different artists. Copyright page of the first one is obviously wrong as it's definately John Harris illustrated pp74-75 of Mass. --Mavmaramis 17:44, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm going to make the changes and notify Willem. Hauck 17:50, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Les longs courriers de l'espace

Re cover art for this book - you probably copied the UK cover artist which is indeed Jeffrey Ridge, but this artwork is on page 40 of the book credited to David Jackson - smae illutsration as on this book. --Mavmaramis 18:21, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. Hauck 19:23, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Done. Hauck 18:09, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

The wrong way round

Somthing got a bit mixed up with this record. It should be the other way around i.e. the interiorart should be a variant of the cover. I found another book with the same artwork here that should also be appended. --Mavmaramis 20:55, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Corrected. Hauck 10:02, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Hauck. No doubt you have noticed my "stream of conciousness" edits. The only thing I find irritating is seeing a piece of artwork that you know is on a book cover but it's not in the list of that artist - or you *swear blind* you saw that book cover elsewhere in the artists list but can't find it for love nor money (or clicking through every single title for the nth time) or you know the book it came from but it hasn't been put into the record (yet). For the most part I'm still up to the letter L in my verification process. I'm guessing there's no way you could have thumbnails of images under each artist like you can for publications. --Mavmaramis 11:49, 20 June 2015 (UTC)
It's a idea that came up regularly (and recently), but for now hits the problem of bandwith. Hauck 12:21, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Mick Van Houten

I just wanted to ask how (or where) the capital V of his name came from/was derived as I have seen on the books I have with his artwork his name is spelled "van Houten" (lower case v the same as "van Vogt"). Not going to make a big thing about it merely another of those irksome inconsistancies. --Mavmaramis 18:06, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, but I don't know. Capitalization rules are a hard battle here. Hauck 18:23, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Cover art link cockup

Re this artwork - should be this cover same as this cover. Sorry for that. --Mavmaramis 18:46, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Can you be more precise about the problem? Hauck 19:29, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
This artwork links to this - which as you can see is two distinctly different pieces of artwork (both by Roberts) for two differently titled books (Leviathan and Eye of thew Pyramid). It should link ONLY to the cover art for this book and not to the other two.

This title should link ONLY to "Eye of the Pyramid" i.e. this book and this book. Hope that makes things clear(er). --Mavmaramis 19:59, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Have a look at the result and tell if it's all right. Hauck 20:16, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
That is now correct. Phew. --Mavmaramis 07:19, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Kaluta Sketchbook Series

Regarding your comment on the rejection of my editing this book I'm guessing someone else passed the other three volumes to which I added with the same notes and put 0000-00-00 as date. If your comment regarding the number line is valid I'll redo the other three volumes and edit out the note re number line. Thanks for the info all useful stuff. --Mavmaramis 19:16, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

More Kaluta weirdness. I edited the title from "Vol. 1" to "Volume One" as per book in hand/title page which still seems to show title as "Vol.1" and the listing still shows the other three volumes as "undated" - "those nasty grumbly grimblies" [now there's an obscure song lyric for you] have obviously been doing bad things ["And they're climbing down your chimney, yes they're trying to get in. Come to take your money - isn't it a sin, they're so thin ?"]. I'm going to quit for the evening and hope I havn't given you more brain ache. My sense of humour is...err...weird but maybe you'll have a chuckle (or a groan whichever is appropriate). --Mavmaramis 20:09, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
Don't worry, it's just that all these modifications should be done on both canonical and variant title and at publication level. I've (probably) corrected the lot. Hauck 20:19, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
Once again a sterling job. Everything looks fine. And if you're scratching your head at those obscure song lyrics - Caravan, In The Land of Grey and Pink from 1971. --Mavmaramis 07:22, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Boris 4

Why is this being held? the only change was the image? Susan O'Fearna 08:26, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Because, as evoked here the title that you gave ("Boris 4: Magcificent Myths") did strike me as odd, more when seeing the cover that you uploaded (with "Magnificent" instead). Do you confirm as entered? Hauck 09:50, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
it's a typo, I just need to fix it once it's approved Susan O'Fearna 17:06, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
hahaha typo in Tim White Trading cards -- I see it! Susan O'Fearna 08:37, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Exactly, corrected. Hauck 14:44, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

The Best of A. E. van Vogt Volume 1

Want to check with you about this book as to where the 1979 date came from. My copy 's copyright page merely has the "First published by Sphere as part of a single volume 1974" with no mention of a 1979 date whatsoever. --Mavmaramis 18:00, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

The copyright page refers to the first combined edition here (note price). The 1979 date comes from this bibliography and this indispensable site. Hauck 18:54, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for that. Another useful site. I must compile a list of sites for bibliographies that show book covers at some point but that's for another day. --Mavmaramis 07:21, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Absolute Magnitude #12

Hi Herve. I was going through my copy of your verified Absolute Magnitude #12 and saw some things that I thought could be changed / added. If you agree, I would be happy to try to do that for you:
Page numbering: Shouldn't the page numbers of the fiction contents start with the first page of art? If so, some of the start pages need changing.
P.3 has fiction credited to "Steven Miller" not "Steve Miller" on the actual story title page.
I've been entering column titles for columns such as "Primary Ignition" with the header title such as in this case "Leap of Faith"; the column name shows up in the series. What do you think of that method?
Enter a letter by Joy V. Smith, a recognized author.
Add 15 book reviews.
Add some notes.
Let me know if you want me to do any or all of these, or if you want to work on them yourself. Or not :) Thanks, Doug / Vornoff 18:30, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

I'm quite taken with the moderating business, you can do that yourself. Hauck 18:57, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Corgi SF Collectoir's Library

Expanded this from a question relating to a specific book viz this one as I see a blue cover and my copy has a purple cover. These SF collector's Library editions were published with either a blue or a purple cover (various shadings if you look at the cover scans). One of the other's (Fantastic Voyage) the earlier CSFCL are purole but my later edition is blue. Not sure if that's worrth noting somewhere. Anyway could you have a look at your copy of Hospital Station - blue or purple ? Thanks. --Mavmaramis 18:57, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Mine is more of a purple hue. But the whole business is perhaps an artefact of the scanning process or a question of aging. Hauck 19:35, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
You may well be right. Thanks for checking anyway. I just wanted to be sure before replacing the blue version with my purple version (which I have done). But does seem odd that Corgi issued them in blue and purple - why (asking a rhetorical question) the different colours. --Mavmaramis 20:17, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Drunkard's Walk

Re this book. I changed it to Granada because it has Granada on the spine and Granada (under "A Pather Book") on title page and coptright page also has "Published by Granada Publishing" no "in Pather books" as the previous edition. I'm guessimg it's not easy to determine exactly when Pather ends and Granada begins. So "Panther" isn't exactly "everywhere" - I probably didn't write an effective enough note. --Mavmaramis 19:51, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Cover artist for this book is Geoff Taylor per his website here. Record amended accordingly. --Mavmaramis 16:30, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Scavenger's Newsletter

Hi, please help me sort out the entries for this magazine. I have a little pile of issues I can enter, but it looks like the magazine and the issues have been set up wrong. The year is currently listed in the title. I didn't know what to do, either. I've submitted an issue with the number in the title. Please let me know how to better enter the issues I've got. Thanks. Pkeets 02:34, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Since I didn't hear back from you, I suppose I entered the issue correctly? Whatever, the others need to be sorted out. The year shouldn't be part of the title. Pkeets 17:21, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Novel by Curval

You deleted the publication record which was created for this title based on a review in a publication which I primary verified. Will you be adding another publication record to replace the one which was deleted? Mhhutchins 05:05, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

I intended to change to an essay (it's not sf) but got sidetracked. Will be done later (hard to do on a smartphone, too big fingers).Hauck 05:24, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Even though the Fantasy Review piece says it's not SF, the description of Ah ! Que c'est beau New York ("the story of a man falling into madness, building walls between himself and the world") would make it to be borderline. Even so, wouldn't Curval be considered "above the threshold"? If true, even his non-sf novels would be eligible for the database. Then a review would have a direct link to a title record containing a publication record. (The novel is listed on Curval's SFE3 page.) Mhhutchins 16:47, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Even if Curval is quite known here in France, this novel is not SF and I would not put him "above the threshold".Hauck 16:49, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
I would think that all of the works of a popular science fiction author would be eligible for the database, regardless of their genre. If that's not a case for being "above the threshold" who would be? The threshold standard is primarily used for authors who aren't popularly considered sf authors or haven't established a body of work within the sf field. Is Curval not considered an sf author in France? That's what he's known for in the US. Mhhutchins 18:25, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
That's the problem of such a "definition", it's subject to interpretation. Hauck 19:01, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Since it was a publication record I originally created to link to a review in a spec-fic magazine to a novel by a "quite known" science fiction author, I'm going to create a new publication record to duplicate the one that was deleted, and mark it as non-genre. I will then have to remove and delete the ESSAY you created in my primary verified record, adding a new REVIEW record to replace the one you deleted and then link it back to the title (which remained the the database even after the publication record was deleted). Seems like a lot of trouble when a inquiry on my talk page would have been all that was needed. Mhhutchins 20:55, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Asimov's Letters

The precedent is already set for this in the db. See Janet Fox's record, for example, which lists three letters as essays. Asimov's has the letters section listed, but as "uncredited." Some letters may be trivial, but others include significant discussion about the stories and columns. If the information on the letters is available, then it makes sense to credit them. Pkeets 03:23, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

In this case (I don't know if you own a copy of the magazine), the letter is of the utter triviality (and less than 70 words long) : "I've read your last issue and loved the stories by Willis and Elliott, thanks for such fiction by and for women.". Before adding data, ISFDB etiquette requires that you notify the diverse PVs (in this case including me) that entered the contents and skipped this (or others) letter with likely perfectly valuable reasons. Hauck 13:09, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Spectre Magazine

Regarding your request to remove the interview and resubmit, could you take out the interview and post the remaining? Or is there a way to clone the submission? I'm trying to comply with your request to input all the articles, stories, etc. in these magazines, but it's quite a bit of work to reenter all that data. Pkeets 03:29, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

No it's not possible. Without more data, only the CLEARLY spec-fic STORIES (not artwork, no essay) should be entered.Hauck 13:02, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Please clarify. Do you want just the short stories entered? I suppose I could scan parts of this and send it to you for evaluation. Do you consider paranormal to be in-genre? That would be about ghosts, demons, supernatural horror, etc. Pkeets 17:02, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Paranormal is OK. We welcome everything, from Zombies to Vampires and from Ghouls to Martians. Enter the short stories and the essays that are clearly about spec-fic (SF, Fantasy, suprenatural horror). Hauck 17:35, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
What about the interview with the paranormal expert and the illustrations? Pkeets 19:00, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
The interview, no. Illustrations, why not but is it worth the trouble? Hauck 19:14, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
In this case, the essays are the real pain. Two illustrations and an interview are no problem. Pkeets 02:55, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Scavenger's Newsletter #152

I see this as approved in my list of submissions, but I don't see in in the db. Does it take a while to appear? Pkeets 03:35, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Because you didn't be put it in a publication series, it's here. Hauck 13:00, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
I guess I don't understand how to do a series. I thought I entered this one the same way I've done all the others. Could you fix the series problem for me? Pkeets 17:05, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Done. Hauck 17:32, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks!

Well, I was waiting for this objection. Alas, if you could physically look at this book you'll see that it's credited to Frank Limido and not Franck Limido contrary to what noosfere says (note that their treatment of artist is generally of poor quality to say the least). As I already said to other contributors on related subjects, it's hugely likely that Frank and Franck are the same person but it's not a definitive proof. Regarding its putative language that you try to set to "german" (after trying before to set it to "French"), you didn't provide any evidence. I've rejected your submission. Note also that these comments are written by an artist (he speaks a bout drawing) that signs Frank. Hauck 16:37, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

J.-H. Rosny Aîné's Romans préhistoriques

Would you happen to be familiar with this "cycle"? According to the introduction, it's "un cycle qui compte quatre autres romans et une demi-douzaine de nouvelles, publiés entre 1887 et 1930", but I am not sure if these works really constitute a series or whether they merely share a vaguely similar prehistoric setting. Ahasuerus 21:55, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

Scavenger's Newsletter covers

When I tried to upload a cover scan, I got this message: "This file is bigger than the server is configured to allow." What is the maximum file size for uploads? I don't see it anywhere in the instructions. Thank you. Pkeets 02:45, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Nevermind. I looked at some other files. I've got the cover to upload for Scavenger's Newsletter #134, but not the contents right now. I'll have to put it up later. Pkeets 04:42, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't know the maximum size enforced by the site. The rules are no more than 150 kb and no more than 600 pixel in the highest dimension. Hauck 05:21, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
It fussed about 158 kb, but seemed to take the file. Did I do this correctly? How long before the covers show up with the magazine entries? Pkeets 05:42, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
To "see" the covers you have, after uploading as you did, to enter the link to the image (for example http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/a/af/SCVNGRSNWS1996.jpg) in the "Image URL:" field. This submission will then have to be approved and the result will look like this. Hauck 09:58, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
I can't get this to work. When I entered the url like you did, it says it needs the image and when I enter the image file name, it complains about characters. It won't accept either. Pkeets 16:56, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Ha. Nevermind. I finally got the right url. Pkeets 17:08, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

P.S. I submitted edits trying to organize the grid for this magazine. Would you approve those please? Pkeets 17:09, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

I think I've approved the lot, I've also added the covers. Hauck 17:12, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I've got one more cover for #134 that I can upload, but no info right now on the contents. Can we do that? I can add the contents later on. Pkeets 17:15, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
No problem. Hauck 18:07, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
The submission is Scavenger's Newsletter #134 and it's waiting for approval. I can upload the cover right away. Pkeets 19:41, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Approved, please think about becoming the Primary Verifier of the publication (it just means that you own a physical copy of it and lend value to the data). It'll be also interesting to precise the binding (format). Hauck 19:44, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Oops. Trouble. For some reason issue #134 has appeared separate from the other issues and isn't in the grid. You had already approved one submission, but I didn't find it because it wasn't in the grid. However, I can see it on Janet Fox's page. I added the cover to one of the listings. I don't see how to verify. How do I go about it? Pkeets 20:19, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Point 1 is because the title (of EDITOR type) hasn't been put into the correct series ("Scavenger's Newsletter"), it is now. Point 2, to verify a pub, go at pub level (for example here) then use the "Verify This Pub" link and choose a verification (to have their meaning, click on them) and click in the "verified" column at the appropriate position. To keep it simple, you can click on "Primary" which means that you're the first to indicate that you own the book (or magazine or else). Hauck 20:30, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
I verified all the entries. There is still one problem, though. Look at Janet Fox's page here http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?12968 and you can see that #134 is listed twice. Can you fix that? Thanks for your help on this. I'll finish up #134 later in the year. Pkeets 23:24, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Cathy Buburuz

It looks like "Kathy" in this entry http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?217056 should be Cathy Buburuz who has a fairly extensive page http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?217056/ I thought I entered her name as it was printed in the magazine, but I can't check now. Should I set it up as a pseudonym? Correct it to "Cathy"? Pkeets 05:38, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

You should set up a pseudonym and then individually variant the concerned item. Hauck 10:00, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I made the pseudonym. How do I "individually variant" the item? Pkeets 16:45, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
First go there (the title to be varianted). Then use the "Make This Title a Variant Title or Pseudonymous Work" link. In the next screen, use (in this case) the lower part and replace the pseudonym ("Kathy Buburuz") by the canonical name ("Cathy Buburuz"). Click next on the "Create New Parent Title" and wait for a moderator to approve your submission. This will "void" Kathy Buburuz's page and transfer the title to Cathy Buburuz's one. Hauck 16:53, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Well done. Hauck 17:00, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Lightspeed: Year One

I updated Lightspeed: Year One to:

  • Added note about publication date on publisher's web site.
  • Added comment about "not available in bookstores until December 6th" note.
  • Added that the cover artist is credited on the copyright page plus also changed the note to spell out his name as stated in both credits. Before the ISFDB note had "Cover art credited to Alexius on back cover" which implied that the credit only stated "Alexius".
  • Added note that it's printed in Canada.
  • Corrected the page number for No Time Like the Present. The record had "57" but the story appears in page 59 and the table of contents also has 59.

I left the publication date at 2011-12-00 though feel the available evidence from secondary sources shows that it should be 2011-11-00. I checked Locus but it appears all of their information is based on Amazon's data. They reported the publication date as being 22 Nov 2011 while Amazon today has November 24, 2011. There's no mention of publication being shifted to December. The main puzzle is the "not available in bookstores until December 6th" note. --Marc Kupper|talk 07:39, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

No problem, most of the note is not mine (I'm usually not that verbose). Hauck 12:19, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Of translators and variants

Hello. Since the time, I think I know how you feel about the problem, which is not exactly my point of view ;o). What we are in need of is a clear rule about this, and not individual interpretations of what textual grounds really cover. I'll start a discussion about it on Rules and standards, and see what comes out of it (if indeed anything does !). Linguist 15:51, 17 July 2015 (UTC).

The Chalice of Death: Three Novels of Mystery in Space

The first piece in the omnibus The Chalice of Death: Three Novels of Mystery in Space is not the novelette "The Chalice of Death", but the complete novel "Lest We Forget Thee, Earth", now titled "The Chalice of Death" (this is a fix-up novel incorporating the novelette). In the introduction, Silverberg writes that he had originally called the novel "The Chalice of Death", but the editor changed it to "Lest We Forget Thee, Earth". For the omnibus, Silverberg restored the original title. I hope this is understandable. Please check Silverberg's introduction for the complete story. Darkday 21:17, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

Freeze Frames, novel or collection?

Hi, we're the two editors owning Isfdb's copies of 'Freeze Frames' by Katharine Kerr, and I would like to ask you whether you also would like to change the type from 'Novel' to 'Collection'. Why? Upon reading the book I found out the the chapterbook 'Resurrection' that I owned at the time was the same as the chapter by that name, and recently I found out that the short story 'Asylum' is the same as the chapter by that name.--Dirk P Broer 19:15, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

IMHO, we're more in front of a fix-up (novel) than a collection (note the absence of an individual copyright line for each text). So by analogy with other fixups (think AEVV), I tend stick to the NOVEL type. Hauck 20:04, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Frank Herbert, Starmont Reader's Guide

I added the artist, Stephen Fabian, to this pub, based on the cover's appearance in Art Folio No. 7: The Starmont Covers, 2004.

Le gambit des étoiles

About this pub : BDFI gives 1975 as a printing date, which is consistent with what you had surmised. nooSFere identified the artist as Henri Lievens, which I guessed it was as well. Would you approve of those changes ? Thanks, Linguist 15:59, 3 August 2015 (UTC).

BDFI (to which I've collabored a lot years ago) likely does not have more evidence than me, not enough to pinpoint a date. As for the noosfere artist credit, it's one of their weakest point. In theory, nearly all Marabout SF are illustrated by Lievens, that's not enough (for me anyway) to assign credit. Sorry. Hauck 16:26, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I'll just add a note about a possible Lievens credit, then. Linguist 07:50, 4 August 2015 (UTC).

Marabout migrations

Hello. I was wondering about the cover corresponding to this pub. I had just replaced it by a better one, when I realized that this must have been the 1969 cover. In 1973, you would expect to see the square “Science Fiction“ logo next to the reading Leptoptilos. I was going to change it and add the other Marabout printing-cum-rightful-cover, but thought I'd better check first. How do you perceive the situation ? Thanks, Linguist 09:19, 10 August 2015 (UTC).

Hello. I would have liked to change this publisher's name from E. "L'Amérique aux fantasmes", by Pierre K. Rey

In the notes to your verified publication, you say this was "Translated by diverse hands." But Noosfere says all of the stories were translated by Luc Carissimo. Should these notes be changed? Chavey 01:38, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

There is not the standard OPTA mention "translated by XXX" on the book or after each story. Only copyright is shared between the publisher and Carissimo. As usual, the fact that all the translations are by Carissimo is an inference of noosfere. If you're trying to systematically question my notes in light of noosfere's sometimes dubious affirmations and/or different standards, I will no more answer your queries. Hauck 06:35, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
No, there was not my intent. I realize you are the expert on French sources. But I also had thought (possibly optimistically) that noosfere was reliable. My question was an honest question: Should the attribution be changed? If you say not, I certainly accept that. Chavey 02:06, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Cover artist for Divine Invasions

I added the artist and an accompanying note. Christian Stonecreek 04:53, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Artist check

Can you confirm that the art on page 107 of this publication is credited to "Daryl Elliott" and not Darryl Elliott? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 20:42, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Same question about the art on page 10 of this publication. This one's missing a letter in both names. Thanks again. Mhhutchins 20:44, 22 August 2015 (UTC)

Both corrected. Hauck 10:38, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Elizabeth Bear's 'New Amsterdam'

Please drop by the discussion where I've proposed changing your Verified publication of New Amsterdam from a Novel to a Collection. Thanks Kevin 16:21, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

Jack Dann's Visitors

Would you please take a look at Visitors (1) and Visitors (2) since you have verified the magazines these stories appear in? It looks like someone has added the "(1)" and the "(2)" in a non-standard attempt to disambiguate these stories. If that's the case, they should be removed as we use notes (which already exist) for that. Can you confirm they aren't part of the published title? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 21:41, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Done. Hauck 04:58, 30 August 2015 (UTC)

SF Monthly 1974-04 art

The interior art at page 8 and 21 of Science Fiction Monthly, April 1974 (see Note) is the same as the cover art of Destiny Doll, and is thus by Lucinda Cowell. Horzel 08:24, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

De peur que les ténèbres…

Re-sized your cover scan for this pub. Thanks. Linguist 10:14, 8 September 2015 (UTC).

Replaced your scan by a slightly better one for this one. Thanks. Linguist 10:43, 8 September 2015 (UTC).

Trimward and/or Trinward

Please respond to this inquiry at your convenience. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:56, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Forgot it. It's Trinward in both cases. Corrected. Hauck 13:18, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Poems in The Best of L. Sprague de Camp

We've got the titles of the poems listed incorrectly in our mutually verified copy of The Best of L. Sprague de Camp and I suspect they are wrong across all copies. I'm asking the verifiers of all the affected copies to join this discussion. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 15:09, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

From the Travel Diary and Sketchbook of Braxton Montague Shew III

You have verified the magazines containing From the Travel Diary and Sketchbook of Braxton Montague Shew III and From the Travel Diary and Sketchbook of Braxton Montague Shew III. Given these were published in the same magazine a few months apart, I'm assuming they are not the same story? Should these be put into a series with some notes to avoid future confusion? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:12, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

I've disambiguated the lot. Hauck 16:41, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction Second Edition

Your primary verified http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?192877 has a note stating "Origin of price and pub month unknown (none on book)." The Locus1 entry for the book gives the month, year and price, and Amazon UK gives the full date. Do you wish to amend the existing note, or will I do so?Astrodan 22:28, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

No problem, please proceed. Hauck 05:27, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, will do.Astrodan 08:43, 14 September 2015 (UTC)

The New Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, Ed. James Gunn - page count

In my copy of this book [1], there seems to be a couple of issues with the page count.

The Roman numerals section at the start of the book runs as far as page xix, (with a total count of xix+524) as shown in the pub. listing. This is followed by an unnumbered page carrying a full-page Vincent Di Fate artwork. The next page is the first page of the main A-Z content of the book and is also unnumbered. As the following page is numbered as page 2, this first page must be page 1. That means that the unnumbered Vincent Di Fate page can only be part of the Roman numerals section. My submissions ed. has judged that the page count should really be increased by one, to read xx+524, with page xx carrying content, i.e. the Vincent Di Fate artwork.

The other thing is that in my copy, page xiii is printed twice, either side of a double page spread (as opposed to being on either side of a single page.) Both pages carry the same page number, xiii. I imagine the best way to handle that is to just mention it in a publication note.

Could you check your copy for this fault? It may be that it's just mine that's affected. Thanks, Astrodan 14:07, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

For the page count, no problem with me. After a few tens of thousand edits, I still found our way to indicate the number of pages particularly complicated (I prefer a more simple rule : number of pages = highest page number physically printed on the book). For the page xiii, I've only got it once : xii (Farmer to Hahn) is on the left, xiii (Hall to Levy) is the right and followed by xiv (logically on the left, Lupoff to Pierce). Hauck 16:56, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
My copy doesn't have Farmer to Hahn I've just realised, it's been replaced by the extra page xiii. Am I right in thinking I read somewhere that this encyclopedia had a lot of errors? They can add this to the list. I'll do a short pub. note to cover it. BTW I prefer your page count idea too. Astrodan 17:23, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to say, Locus1 shows date month (Oct), ok if I add a pub note for that? Astrodan 09:52, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
OK. Hauck 13:47, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

100 Must-Read Science Fiction Novels

I've added a Worldcat/OCLC link in the pub notes of your pv'd [2]. I was also going to add a pub. note giving Amazon date month info, but this would conflict with your second pub. note; do you want to have a look, or should I go ahead? Astrodan 09:22, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

La nuit du Jabberwock

Replaced the cover scan of your verified (larger, better definition). Thanks. Linguist 09:57, 16 September 2015 (UTC).

Planète à gogos

Slightly expanded the notes for your verified. Will upload a better cover scan shortly. Thanks. Linguist 10:39, 16 September 2015 (UTC).

Les chiens

Uploaded new cover scan for your verified. Thanks. Linguist 13:31, 16 September 2015 (UTC).

Carnacki et les fantômes

Ditto for this one. Thanks. Linguist 13:41, 16 September 2015 (UTC).

La maison des damnés

You indicated the translator of this pub as "Remaux” in this record. My 2000 copy has “Reumaux”. Linguist 14:06, 16 September 2015 (UTC).

Indeed, it's Reumaux. Hauck 14:46, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
So that's that (might have been a typo, though). Linguist 14:51, 16 September 2015 (UTC).
Right. For a moment, I thought you were being sarcastic… ;o) Linguist 15:02, 16 September 2015 (UTC).

Hidden Empire - additional pub. dates

I've got an edition of your PV1'd [3], which is identical to yours in all respects down to and including the printing history line: "Number line "15" indicating an undated 15th printing". Mine just doesn't have a number line or any subsequent printing date info, meaning I have a pub. date; 2005. A similar situation exists with the PV1'd [4] from another editor. Just checking as a newbie whether that means I need to create a separate pub. record in Title record #23050, or not? Thanks, Astrodan 15:40, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

All these books are only distinguishable by the printing line (they all bear the same publication data 2002 for the hc, 2003 for the Earthlight pb and 2005 for the Pocket pb) and some details (in this case the presence of an ISBN-13 indicates a post-2010 printing). If there is NO printing line (it's sometimes just a number in the middle of the copyright page), yours is another printing than those listed and warrants a new publication. Hauck 16:24, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll do a new pub. Astrodan 11:26, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Before I do, there are 24 pages at the back of my copy showing the first four chapters of "A Forest of Stars", the sequel book by the same author. The help page for content rules is slightly ambiguous on this, so how would you treat it for page numbering - as valid content or advertising? Astrodan 00:25, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
I tend to treat them as advertising (so not counting them). Hauck 10:27, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks again, I'll get onto it. BTW in case you were wondering, I've just spotted a mistake in my first line above, which should read "..down to but excluding the printing history line.." The concentration tends to slip a bit just after lunch! Astrodan 12:40, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Rogue Moon - Pub. note

I've added an OCLC active link to your PV1 [5], Astrodan 21:12, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Don't bother to notify me for OCLC additions (I'm not an huge fan). Hauck 05:32, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
No probs; after helpful discussion with Mhhutchins I'm not either. Astrodan 22:14, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

The Winds of Change - identical editions?

I've verified this book (0nly the 8th on the system?) and added a scanned cover image from my own copy, but I see that it appears to be identical to your PV1'd this book. Does that mean that one of them could be deleted? If your copy has the incorrect 9th digit in the ISBN on the copyright page, would that confirm that they're identical? Thanks, Astrodan 09:13, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

They're not identical (and not to be deleted) because, as I indicated in the notes, my copy is the 2nd printing ("reprinted 1984" on copyright page). Please note that it's not wise to post on an archive page like this one because the user is not warned in case of new posts (which is not the case with the "user" page).Hauck 15:08, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
