Welcome!

Hello, HardbackNut, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!Kraang 20:55, 16 October 2021 (EDT)

Second Stage Lensmen

HI! Is the title[1] page authors name "E. E. 'Doc' Smith" and the title Lensman with an "a" if so I'll have to change them to match the book(found one on Amazon). unmerge the publication and make it a variant of the parent title which it is currently in. Thanks!Kraang 17:41, 18 October 2021 (EDT)

The author is "E. E. 'Doc' Smith" on the cover and on the inner title page.

I noted that when I do "add publication" initially I cannot change the title and author. Hence a second change request for the author for some of the books. Similar for the covers. I seems the book has to exist before I can upload a cover and I need a second submission to add the cover (see the queue for my cover updates) I checked the wiki of course but have not found a better solution, but correct me if I'm wrong obviously.

Second stage... yes indeed: the dust cover has Lensman with an "a"; while the inner title page (and in the actual content text) is indeed Lensmen with an "e" The back cover lists it with a an "e".

This is partially part of the UK versus US editions (See "Grey Lensman" versus "Gray Lensman") but inconsistently used. See also [2]

My apologies for any mixups. I need to familiarise myself a bit more with the various options of adding books though (new,add,clone...) HardbackNut 05:42, 19 October 2021 (EDT)

As a new contributor just use new book if there are variants involved, if no variant then add or clone. Use the title page for author and title and if the cover is different than make a note about difference. Then create a variant to the parent title or canonical name. If you need help just ask on the help board. I'll fix the above mentioned book. Most books have only a title or an author as a variant these books can have both plus minor spelling difference, which can be very confusing even for some moderators. Thanks.18:14, 19 October 2021 (EDT)

cheers, will do. HardbackNut 08:59, 20 October 2021 (EDT)

Galactic Patrol

Noticed you recently uploaded a book scan of WH Allen's UK First edition of Galactic Patrol (Lensman series). Is this a personal book scan or a archive image as this is the first time I have come across the book image? Jj72uk 11:47, 30 November 2021 (EST)jj72uk

It's a personal scan. I recently was so lucky to get all 7 books in the series in this edition. --HardbackNut 09:29, 4 December 2021 (EST)

Where on earth did you get Galactic Patrol from! Two years of searching and its the last one I need to find still! Jj72uk 11:33, 6 December 2021 (EST)Jj72uk

On eBay UK - single auction with all 7 books - I had a notification search on 'lensmen'+hardback. HardbackNut 09:34, 10 December 2021 (EST)

Conan en de scharlaken citadel

Can you check this verified pub angain? I have a few questions.

  • The author can't be "Robert Howard E.A.". The E.A. is Dutch for "and others" and is not part of the name. How is/are the author(s) credited on the titlepage?
  • The contents still have to be added. According to Fandata it contains the four stories from Conan the Usurper, but does it also contain De Camp's introduction?
  • Is the cover artist credited? The illustration is by Michael Whelan (see here but Fandata has a credit to Boris Vallejo.

If you need help entering the contents, please ask (or do you want me to do it?). Thanks for checking, --Willem 04:40, 9 May 2022 (EDT)

According to OCLC (I added the link) the authors are credited as 'Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague de Camp, Lin Carter'. Christian Stonecreek 13:21, 9 May 2022 (EDT)

You are both absolutely right. I have now adjusted the authors. The cover artist is not credited in the book. The cover image bears a signature (NOT Boris) but I cannot decipher it.

I do indeed need to add the content (been busy) and I'd like to do it myself as I need to learn :) But I will contact you if I get stuck - thanks.

>>four stories from Conan the Usurper correct >>contain De Camp's introduction I think it does; however the 3 pages (at the back of the book) are signed by the translator without De Camp's name mentioned. My gut says this is De Camp's text though.

cheers. HardbackNut 10:49, 21 May 2022 (EDT)

I approved your edit, and changed the author(s) of the ANTHOLOGY title to match the publication. Strange that Lin Carter is credited for something he didn't write but well...
The introduction by De Camp should start with (a translation of) "One of the world's great natural storytellers was Robert Ervin Howard (1906-36) of Cross Plains, Texas.". If you need any help, you can respond here. I will follow this page. Thanks! --Willem 14:23, 21 May 2022 (EDT)
