Welcome!

Hello, Graeme, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! --MartyD 13:45, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Daughter of the Blood

Hi, and welcome. I accepted your addition of Daughter of the Blood, found a cover image for it on Amazon, and made a few other notes about it. The ISBN-13 and the fact that it's an ebook from 1998 are a little suspicious, but all of the information I could find does point that way, so I added rather detailed notes. Do you actually have this ebook, or did your information come strictly from Goodreads? You can reply here by editing this section. Indent your response by adding a colon (":") onto the front of the line (one colon per level of indentation). Thanks, and thank you for contributing. --MartyD 14:31, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Oh crap!! I didn't save my comment from earlier today! Saw the notes - good idea. Yes, I thought 1998 & epub??? But then http://www.worldcat.org/title/daughter-of-the-blood/oclc/441492307 agrees. No, I was looking to purchase but I found a 2nd hand pb which got the job done but I usually check isfdb early in a search for stuff like isbn, tags, publisher etc - I saw this edition first at Goodreads & liked the cover but hadn't seen it at isfdb so thought it'd be a good idea to add it & the info was straight from Goodreads.
Now a question - I expect the answer is no. Do you list stories that are available on-line e.g. http://temporarilysignificant.blogspot.com.au/2014/10/the-home-crowd-advantage.html "The Home Crowd Advantage" by Ben Aaronovitch & part of his Rivers of London series?
Michael, Mhhutchins, our local expert on ISBNs, says the ISBN-13 can't have been 1998 and is in a range that likely is from 2007-2008. So he changed it to "date unknown" (0000-00-00).
In general, web-only publication, such as posting on a blog, is not eligible. See ISFDB:Policy#Rules_of_Acquisition for a detailed list of INs and OUTs. There are some nuances, but the rule of thumb is that the content should be available in some "persistent" way, such that if the website disappeared we'd still be able to have the content. This usually means the publication must be provided in some intended-to-be-downloaded-and-saved format, such as PDF or EPUB or Kindle (etc.). --MartyD 10:55, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the help/advice Marty - I will continue to add tags etc as my reading life continues and, I expect, only rarely add a new edition.
Cheers, Graeme

The Last Days of Magic

Hi. I accepted your submission of The Last Days of Magic. I had to change the cover image link, because we only use links to sites granting us permission (see ISFDB:Image linking permissions for details). I found the image on Amazon, which also had a Look Inside available that showed the Maestro interior art credit plus a cover art credit. So I added those and adjusted the notes. --MartyD 01:05, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

The Demon Barker of Wheat Street

Hello, I've approved your submission but had to make extensice changes to conform to our standards: 1) as this publication contain one (and only short story), it must be entered as a CHAPBBOK (one of our idiosyncrasies, it means a COLLECTION with one text) and not a NOVEL (it's too short for this), 2) this type of container (CHAPBOOK) must contain one text that have to be manually added at the creation stage (not like a NOVEL where this process is automated), 3) I've regularized the publisher to Pocket Star Books, 4) I've deleted the number of pages (meaningless for an ebook), 5) I've deleted the series information (it's carried by the SHORTFICTION record here), 6) I've added the artist and varianted the cover to its original appearance. The result is here. Hauck 13:24, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Graeme 02:13, 20 August 2016 (UTC) Gooday Hauck, I'm sorry for the extra work I caused. The problems I did not understand are 1 I expected to see "Add Publication to This Title" option on this page: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1598953 2 I thought "OK I'll add a Chapbook" but reading the FAQ implied to me that I could NOT add a series title "CHAPBOOK title records should not contain a synopsis nor be entered into a title series." So the only other option I thought appropriate was Novel. 3 Apologies I simply misread the publisher. 4 Page count in an ebook is pretty meaningless but I guess it's an attempt to indicate the size of the story 5 Re: Your point 5. Is there documentation explaining your point here? I can see that it works but not how? Finally, am I simply causing more work, for you guys, rather than helping? The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales

Hello and thanks for the info. Instead of giving it in the "Note to Moderator field" (where it would have to be re-entered manually by an overburdened moderator ;-)), please use the "Edit This Pub" link of the left of the publication's page and directly enter it. Thanks. Hauck 08:46, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

The Wind in His Heart

I accepted your addition of The Wind in His Heart. but had to make a couple changes:

  • Pub Series: The ISFDB differentiates publisher series (publisher level series like Ballantine Adult Fantasy) from title series (universe or groupings of books independent of publisher like Dune Universe). I removed the pub series you entered as it is a title series (and is already present on the title).
  • External Links: The External Links value should only be the identifier; not the whole URL. The link will be automatically created by the software.

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:58, 19 November 2017 (EST)

Thanks for the fixes & pointing out my mistakes. It's taken this long to work out how to reply! Yes I saw that the publication level had the correct series so, at least the presence of that field struck me as a tad strange. The link was non-obvious but I should remember as it's similar to how I fix my Calibre links to goodreads (ie just change the identifier to the correct title) On another matter, in many cases I see the same cover image attached to some of the published titles but few have the cover artist's name. Should I add the cover artist to all titles when I have a title with the same image?

Cheers, Graeme Graeme 00:44, 29 November 2017 (EST)

Ideally, yes, if you are willing to. If you are basing it off Amazon covers though, be aware that for older pubs, the images are not always reliable. Sometimes Amazon records get updated with a new edition's cover. It's also best practice to state the source of the credit when you do so. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:04, 29 November 2017 (EST)

The Wishing Well

Hello, I've put your submission on hold. What is the source of the artist credit? Thanks. Hauck 02:31, 13 February 2018 (EST)

I own the epub & I found the artist on the copyright page. Later I also noticed that there was a cover designer mentioned, should I have added this as well? Snip from the epub: Cover art by Kel Flowers (www.kelfae.com), Cover design by MaryAnn Harris. Cheers, GraemeGraeme 00:37, 16 February 2018 (EST)
Thanks for your input. I've approved your submission and updated the record with the designer. BTW as you own the publication, you can set you up as its (or one of) Primary Verifier (use the "Verify This Pub" link), this will indicate to moderators and users that the data comes from a reliable source and has been checked. In this case, remember to delete the "data from amazon" bit. Thanks. Hauck 03:29, 16 February 2018 (EST)
OK all done. Thanks for the advice Graeme 19:01, 16 February 2018 (EST)

Yellow Dog

Hello, I've rejected your submission as we do not credit the cover designer (adn you entered her name as "Cover design by MaryAnn Harris."). I've put this data in the note field. Hauck 02:32, 19 February 2018 (EST)
