Other Worlds, January 1953

What are the chances I would start entering Other Worlds mags and someone else would do the same? I have approved your submission but I am going to make a number of changes in order to make sure that the entries are consistent with the data I have entered in the other issues. The first thing I might note is that the date should have been entered as 1953-01-00. That date would have cascaded down to the dates of the other entries. Also, magazine tags should be entered manually because the automatic tag creator does not add the month and year information at the end of the tag. I will add the tag and I will also add a link to the magazine. I will let you know when I have made the changes. Do you have any other issues of Other Worlds you are going to be entering? Maybe we can avoid some duplicate work. You can reply to my message on your talk page by editing this entry. Glad to have you aboard.--swfritter 12:25, 26 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Have made the changes. Noted the following: Publisher is Clark Publishing - name of the printer was entered.

The Bok art should have been entered as 'bc' in contents rather than as cover art.

'Somewhere a Voice', and 'Fast Passage' are less than novella length (cutoff is 17500 words - nice they list the word count).

Tilloison is actually Tillotson (understandable that you misread the second 't').

There must be a separate entry for each piece of art otherwise the entries do not sort correctly. It is not necessary to enter multiple artwork but it is allowed. I have left the mag with only the first pages where are appeared. If you want to add separate entries the artwork for 'Somewhere in Time' also appeared on pages 31 and 43. 'Beyond the Barrier' has artwork also on page 126.

Editorial - I also added the title and issue. Normally you should enter titles exactly as they appear on title page but that can be far too ambiguous when their art too many identical titles for the same author. Also, I have changed author attribution to Raymond A. Palmer since he uses the 'Rap' initials. Some editors would enter 'Rap' as the Editor and then make 'Rap' a pseudonym for Raymond A. Palmer. Too my mind that adds more confusion.

'People Who Make..' Page should be 'fep'.

Added 'Personals' and 'About Our Front Cover' and 'About Our Back Cover'.

'Beyond the Barrier' is a serial - see how I handled this.

Letters - Authorship should be assigned to the person who answers them, in this case 'Rap' initials indicate Raymond A. Palmer. There is is good section in New Magazine Help about this.

Merging titles: Once you have added a magazine you will need to see if the stories are published elsewhere. In that case you will need to "Merge" them. I will do the checks for this issue but the documentation for merges is: http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Help:How_to_merge_titles

The help page for new mags is like a bible: http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/index.php/Help:Screen:NewPub Please make sure in particular to read the section on updating titles. Changes you make to title information inside a publication can affect other titles.

You can view the changes: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?OWSCSTJAN1953

Isn't that Bok back cover beautiful?--swfritter 14:08, 26 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Gorgon776, congratulations on making your first ISFDB contribution a magazine. Those are among the hardest things to do in ISFDB as they have a lot of detail. Hopefully you won't find that rather long feedback above too intimidating. Marc Kupper (talk) 18:17, 27 Jul 2007 (CDT)
Ditto. Please do not look at the first magazine data I entered. Things get to be even more fun when you learn how to handle pseudonyms.--swfritter 10:53, 28 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Science Fiction March 1939

Thanks for submitting the first issue of Charles D. Hornig's Science Fiction! I have approved the submission and made the following changes:

  1. Added "March 1939" to the magazine's title. As per the Help pages, which state that "the title should be of the form Magazine Title, Date, such as Asimov's Science Fiction, June 2004". This is done so that our users could easily distinguish between different issues of the same magazine.
  2. Changed the "Last Name, First Name MI" format to the "FirstName MI. Last Name" format" as per the same Help page, which states that "The name should be entered exactly as it actually appeared in the publication. This includes pseudonyms, abbreviated names ("I. Asimov" instead of "Isaac Asimov", "Robert Heinlein" instead of "Robert A. Heinlein"), etc."
  3. Changed the authors' real names to their pseudonyms and then created "Variant Title" relationship for the pseudonymous stories as per the Help:How to record a variant title page. Please note that at this time we have "A. R. Long" defined as the canonical name for Amelia Reynolds Long. She published most of her fiction under her full name, so ideally that's what we want the canonical name to be. Unfortunately, flip flopping a canonical name and its pseudonym is a time consuming process in the ISFDB, so I have added it to my list of things to do when I have some free time.
  4. Changed 1939-00-00 to 1939-03-00 for all Essays and fiction pieces
  5. Created a new Wiki page for Science Fiction and linked it from the Magazines page
  6. Merged all new story Titles with pre-existing Titles where applicable as per Help:How to merge titles
  7. Changed the spelling of Hamilton's name from "Edmund" to "Edmond" and the spelling of "Conquerer's Voice" to "Conqueror's Voice" as per Hamilton's bibliography
  8. Created Interior Art records based on the Notes field

Could you please take a look at the result and let me know if everything looks OK? Also, a quick question: was the cover really done by both Jack Binder and Frank R. Paul? That would seem rather unusual for the pulp era, but you never know.

Thanks for all the hard work! Sorry about the number of changes, but magazines are a complicated area, so there are quite a few rules that seem arcane at first. Well, OK, I admit that they are sometimes arcane :-) Ahasuerus 01:44, 27 Nov 2007 (CST)

Thanks for the response and for the corrections! The problems you were having with accessing Help pages were probably related to the fact that all URLs that start with "isfdb.tamu.edu" have been flaky for the last few months due to obscure technical problems that our host has been experiencing. All of the Help and Wiki links should still work as long as you manually replace "isfdb.tamu.edu" with "www.isfdb.org" in the URL. Sorry about the inconvenience, it's been a major pain for everybody involved :(
In the meantime, I have approved the Science Fiction June, 1939 submission and made a few minor changes. If an illustration appears on two pages, we generally only give the first page number since entries like "10-11" can make contents data sort incorrectly on the Publication page. I also changed "Manley Wade Wellman" to "Manly Wade Wellman". Is that the way he is credited on the title page or is there a typo in the magazine? I have a complete run of Science Fiction in my collection, but can't check at the moment since I am on the road almost all the time. Other than that, the submission looked very good!
I have set up various "variant title" relationships for the pseudonymous stories and updated the Wiki page for Science Fiction, so I think we should be all set for now. The only pseudonym that gave me a pause was "Eando Binder" since Earl dropped out in January 1936 -- see box-folder 4/419. However, Otto indicated in a letter to Earl in January 1937 that he was still rewriting "our old stuff" and offered Earl 25% of the profits. Similarly, Otto wrote in January 1938 that there were sales opportunities for "our old stuff". Given these facts and the way publishing works, pretty much any "Eando Binder" story published in 1936-1939 may have been written either by Earl and Otto (and then likely rewritten by Otto) or by Otto alone, so I attributed "Where Eternity Ends" to both brothers just to be on the safe side. On the other hand, it is quite unlikely that Earl had anything to do with an article written specifically for a mid-1939 issue, so I attributed it to Otto alone. Decisions, decisions... :-) Thanks again for the submissions!Ahasuerus 22:16, 28 Nov 2007 (CST)

Astonishing Stories August 1940

I have accepted your submission but made the following changes:

  • Added the link to the wiki page - making the tag ASTONAUG1940 in order to be consistent with the tags for other issues.
  • Added August 1940 to the title.
  • Made the page count 116 (inside pages plus 4 pages for the covers).
  • Removed 'uncredited' as the artist name - cover artist attributions work a little differently from interior artist entries. I made this mistake multiple times before I read the appropriate section in Help.
  • Removed the note - according to multiple other reliable sources this cover is uncredited.
  • Changed Strangland to Stangland based upon Contento and Day. If the name actually printed is Strangland we will have to set it up as a pseudonym.
  • Added qualifiers to multiple pieces of artwork illustrating a single story.
  • Added a period to the Jr in Kummer's name.
  • I am taking a leap of faith and assuming that 'Fan Magazines' is actually a column that reviews fan magazines rather than an actual book. Removed it as a book review and added it as an essay column.
  • I have also merged the Jones story with a subsequent reprint.

If I have made any unwarranted or inaccurate changes please let me know. Nice to have somebody working on these old mags. You can answer me on your page.--swfritter 16:06, 17 Dec 2007 (CST)

Hi,

Thanks for the input.

The page numbering in this issue does not include the covers, as is usual with these old pulps. I'm not sure if that makes a difference, but that's why I gave the page count as 112. It is Stangland, not "Strangland". That was my typo. You are correct in your assumption about "Fan Magazines". Thanks for fixing this up. I can't say I'm "working" on the older magazines, but whenever I notice I have one not listed, I'd like to fill in the gaps. I've used this resource a lot; I'd like to give back a little. I have one more Astonishing that isn't listed; hopefully I can keep the corrections needed to a minimum. :) Gorgon776 20:33, 17 Dec 2007 (CST)

From Help: 'For magazines, the convention is to use the actual page count - including the cover. For example, early issues of Fantastic Universe had the pages numbered from 1 to 192, not counting the front or back covers. This would be entered as 196 pages'. I have one issue of Astonishing which I will eventually be putting into the system. I had some issues of Fantastic that actually counted an ad insert for cigarettes as 2 pages.--swfritter 14:58, 18 Dec 2007 (CST)
