Welcome!

Hello, Gaseff, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Hauck 19:26, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

A Canticle for Leibowitz

Hello, I've just rejected your submission. You were trying to enter this short story, a task which is already done. Note that close to 99% of the contents of english-language magazines are already in the db. There were also numerous problem with your submission. Perhaps it's better (easier) to start with a novel in book form. Thanks for contributing. Hauck 19:30, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

Editing a publication record

Re your message about adding a note to this publication record: In order to edit a record, click on the link "Edit This Pub" under the Editing Tools menu on the left side of the screen. On the next page, you have the option to edit most of the fields. Please be aware of ISFDB etiquette concerning the editing of primary verified records. (See the link in the Welcome section above.) In most cases, updating the Note field doesn't require a notification left on the verifying editor's talk page.

I have updated the record to add the gutter code. Thanks for finding it. Mhhutchins|talk 04:22, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

Linking uploaded images to the database record

Thanks for uploading cover images to the ISFDB server. The next step is to link those image files to the records of the books for which these are the covers. As the instructions (step 6) explain:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image file's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins|talk 19:05, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

You have uploaded image files to the ISFDB server which haven't been linked to their publication records. All unlinked files may be subject to deletion. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 05:48, 3 March 2016 (UTC)

Cover image file standards

Re this cover image file: At 958 pixels tall, it exceeds the ISFDB standard of image size being no more than 600 pixels. I will copy, resize, and then re-upload it. The file must still be linked to the publication record. I'll let you do that (see the message above). Mhhutchins|talk 19:08, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

I have resized it. Now you can link it to the publication record. Mhhutchins|talk 19:12, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

The same holds for the cover image of the 1959 Panther edition of The Demolished Man (except that I also linked it). Stonecreek 20:02, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

Gladiator

See the listing for Gladiator on the SFE. Also see this OCLC record, and this one. There are clearly two different editions. If you have a copy of the Book League of America edition, then create a separate record for it. It appears to be a book club edition of the title, not the retail edition. See here for the list of club selections from 1930. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 18:24, 27 January 2016 (UTC)

I accepted your submission to add this record, and did a few changes for it to conform to ISFDB standards. I changed the pub type from "pb" to "other" since I was certain it's not a mass-market paperback, based on the OCLC record (linked above) which gives the height as 25 cm. (about 10 inches). If this is softcover, as I suspect, please change the pub type to "tp". I also changed the publication date to match the date of the issue, and removed the publication series data to the Note field. (Book League of America isn't a publication series.)

A question (please respond here on this talk page): Can you confirm the publisher credit? Is Knopf actually credited as the publisher? Thanks for responding. Mhhutchins|talk 04:16, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

I've changed the publisher to "The Book League of America" using standard English capitalization rules. I also dropped the "Inc." which is usually not included in the Publisher field.
I've also forwarded your email to our software man who is looking into the matter. Hopefully, you'll be able to edit the wiki soon. Thanks for your patience. Mhhutchins|talk 18:55, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

Thank you. It looks like I can edit now.
