Welcome!

Hello, Dosgamer, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Annie 23:33, 9 June 2020 (EDT)

Tunnel Through Time

Hello,

I had to reject your submission. The higher price means a later printing usually and we record all printings of a book. I am not sure if 0012-0015 means 12th printing or something else. So instead of editing the first edition that we have, please use ClonePublication (on the left menu) and instead create a new copy of the book with the ISBN, a date of 0000-00-00 and adding the new price, the note for the 0012-0015 and anything else you want to add. Thanks for the understanding and welcome again! Do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have. Annie 23:37, 9 June 2020 (EDT)

I just responded to you on my page but if you are not monitoring, here is the same explanation. The + sign starts a new conversation. If you want to respond to one, look for the edit link at the right side of the line with the title of the conversation. It will open the editor and you can type the message and press save. Let me know if something still does not make sense and do not hesitate to reach out if I can assist. Annie 03:59, 10 June 2020 (EDT)

Aha, OK i am back from a one day trip to the real world.

Thanks for the help on my submission. Your suggestion about a different edition due to a different price seems logical. Also your suggestion about the 0012-0015 being a printing number line seems reasonable. Obviously if you are reading this i have found the edit button next to the topic line.

When I get a chance i will try to follow your instructions and make a new listing. I was able to find the ClonePublication button Yeah!! LOL!!

Question: In my original footnote to moderator I mentioned that the copyright page did not have ISBN but did have a Standard Book Number and a Library of Congress Catalogue Number. Is the Library of Congress Catalogue Number the one that ISBDB wants under the line "Catalogue Number"? I followed the ISFDB link to the definition of catalogue but did not think that definition really answered my question. Dosgamer 13:48, 11 June 2020 (EDT)

No - the LCCN goes under "external IDs" however it is usually issued for the first printing (and all other printings reprint it). So inyour case it will only go into the notes. The catalog ID is for books with no ISBNs or with a specific catalog ID in addition to the ISBN - in both cases it is for an ID issued by the publisher and not an external authority. Two more quick questions: I am a C.M. Kornbluth fan and collector. If you go to his page you will notice a section at the bottom of NonGenre books he wrote. In addition I have a nongenre Mystery story he wrote in a magazine of the time. Is it permissible to list that and if so, how would I put it on the Summary Page?

You add the magazine and add the story inside of it - the story is eligible because Kornbluth is above the threshold - based on #4 here. If you let me know which magazine it is, I can lead you through the steps - the magazines, especially non-genre ones can be a bit tricky and I will be happy to help with some details ahead of time. Or you can try - start with "New Magazine" and then we can fix whatever you got wrong :) Annie 14:35, 11 June 2020 (EDT)

Also, in 2020 there was a very serious 300 page Bibliography of Kornbluth. May i enter that book and if so, how? I ask because I am presuming i cannot just ClonePublication.Dosgamer 13:56, 11 June 2020 (EDT)

Oh, yes - bibliographies of the major writers are always permitted and we always want them. Start with "New Non Fiction" from the left menu and take it from there. If you need more details on the steps, just post back and ask and will be happy to assist. ClonePub/AddPub are for new editions of books we already have; if this is a new for us book you start with "NEW something" from the left menu :) Annie 14:35, 11 June 2020 (EDT)

Several quick topics

1 In our previous chat above, you suggested that "0012-0015" might be a print history. On a different listing for the original The Runaway Robot by Lester Del Rey I found the following: • Front flap has two number series: 32-0345 [likely to do with the price] and 0012-0015 [likely for the age groups] Since this note accompanies an original (first issue) listing it is not likely to be a printing history number. Hmm, also I am holding a different printing of this first issue and my copy provides the first and second printing on the copyright page. All just FYI.

That does make sense. As I said - I was speculating on that and yes - I had seen these on the flaps on other books and they are indeed age groups usually. :) Annie 15:55, 19 June 2020 (EDT)

2 Sometimes the info is just wrong. I direct you to The Space Merchants by C.M. Kornbluth and Frederik Pohl. Look at the very first hardback listing. 1953-04 Ballantine Books H21. I am holding a "no DJ" copy that i just purchased. If you drill down on the underlying page for this book you will see a note: LCCN: 54006478 NOPE. If you click on that you will be directed to LCCN Search The Sky (a different book by our two co=authors). Now my no DJ first edition lists a LCCN of 53-6886. If you go to LCCN and type in 53006886 BINGO you get the The Space Merchants. (yeah, this is all very picky but i keep trying to acquire real first editions so i get a smidge picky. Do you want to change or should I?

Typos, wrong copy/paste, changed numbers - there are mistakes in the DB - we are human :). Submit an Edit with the new value and the explanation when you find a mistake. See This as well - we know there are mistakes, we just try to have as little as possible. :) Annie 15:55, 19 June 2020 (EDT)

3 I tried changing my profile to not see translations, but when i move from an author's top page to a book listing all the translations are there. Am I missing something or is that just the way it is?

It is the way it is I believe but I will check with the developer. The global value is for author pages I believe; for individual titles you will need to just click on the link "Do not display translations" to remove them from the list of books below it. Annie 15:55, 19 June 2020 (EDT)

4 I am now rested up to start trying to add supplemental version/printing histories. When I do that will I get you as a consistent moderator? I prefer that and did not know how moderators were organized. Dosgamer 15:44, 19 June 2020 (EDT)

No, we work on the queue as a team. If you would rather work with just me for now (all the moderators have their quirks but we work pretty similarly - up to you though), just leave a moderator note in the entry you submit saying "please leave for Annie" and unless a moderator is half asleep, they will - and I will make sure to reserve those for me (once reserved, only I can touch them until released) even when I do not have time to handle immediately. That may mean that they will stay unprocessed longer than strictly needed but if you are ok with that... Annie 15:55, 19 June 2020 (EDT)

Indent characters

Annie

Where can i find a list of the "indent" characters to use in the Notes. I have seen usage of bullets (.) and (o) and other symbols which must count the indent. I did try to read the Helps but could not find this.

We support some HTML (see here). Some people just copy whatever character they like instead of doing HTML - no list of supported characters, as long as it does not look too heavy, it is approved. You can press edit on a Note you like the look of and see how it is achieved. As every editor has their own level of competency with html, we do not enforce formats. Annie 02:37, 20 June 2020 (EDT)

I read the Help about counting pages and I have a question. Many of the Lester Del Rey hardbacks have extra blank pages at the end--and one of the pages is biographical of the author. Is this worth noting or not?Dosgamer 02:10, 20 June 2020 (EDT)

Not if it is the regular half a page they print almost anywhere. This is the kind of thing I would note in the Notes but not in the pages count. If it is more substantial, then yes - you count it and you add it to the contents of the book as an essay. Annie 02:37, 20 June 2020 (EDT)
