Science Fiction: The Best of 2002

Changes to this publication: introduction is x pages not ix, date is March not February according to the copyright page. --Vasha 20:28, 3 July 2017 (EDT)

Mars, We Love You

Changes to this publication (based on a copy at hand): some notes; in the contents, replaced the NOVEL record The War of the Worlds with "War of the Worlds (excerpt)"; added a record for the introduction to the excerpt from Double Star; changed the author credit of "Report on Canali" from G. V. Schiaparelli to Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli; and the foreword to Jane W. Hipolito. --Vasha 23:03, 3 July 2017 (EDT)

The New Women of Wonder

Added roman-numeral introduction to the page numbers; moved external identifiers. --Vasha 12:30, 4 July 2017 (EDT)

2020 Vision (1980 edition)

Changes: Made page numbers consistently be for the introductions to the stories rather than the start of the stories, and added a note about that; capitalization fix and moving external identifiers. --Vasha 12:54, 4 July 2017 (EDT)

Stellar #2

Added note about subtitle of the volume; moved external identifiers. --Vasha 13:31, 4 July 2017 (EDT)

Intended change to The Harriers

Although this book is in the DB as simply The Harriers, the title page reads The Harriers: Book One: Of War and Honor. OK to change it? Also, unlike what the notes say (evidently a typo), the copyright page reads "First Printing, April 1991." --Vasha 15:32, 4 July 2017 (EDT)

The Prophet of Lamath

Singapore Science Fiction

Hi Don, I found a copy of Singapore Science Fiction in the Singapore National Library today. Two changes I think we should make to the record: each story is certainly a short story, and "Adan and Eve" is actually "Adam and Eve".

PS. If you ever want to offload this title from your collection, I'd be more than happy to help out! Cheers. PeteYoung 03:27, 13 July 2017 (EDT)

The War of the Worlds (Abridged)

You have the only verified copy of the Moby Illustrated Classic Editions, in this pub. I had a couple of questions. As a point of verification - my copy has on the title page - Illustrations by Brendan Lynch - against your credit to the cover artist Al Leiner. My other questions are: Why did you choose to add "(Abridged)" to the title; why did you not credit Malvina G. Vogel as an author; and why did you choose the publisher as Moby instead of Moby / Playmore? The unverified publications here and here differ in their approach. I think that the latter is actually the same publication as yours, except they have Brendan doing interior and cover.

If I'm going to enter about 20 of these, I'd like them consistent and prefer the approach of your possible duplicate except I'd have put simply Moby as you had. I feel comfortable updating the existing one's, as they are not verified. I'd appreciate your comments, as you are the only one to admit having one. Doug H 20:21, 27 July 2017 (EDT)

Sorry for not waiting. I've entered my pub so you could see what I mean. Doug H 22:50, 31 July 2017 (EDT)

Burroughs books

Hi, Don! I've picked up a number of later printings of ERB books that have printing histories in them, so can update quite a few with current 0000-00-00 dates. I'll put notes in for the sources. And I'll make just one list here in this post, to keep them together.

Hi, Don! I'm a little confused by [this] record. I have a copy with the same ISBN and date but it says Second Printing and there's no sign of the SBN recorded in the notes. Could you have a quick look? Thanks --~ Bill, Bluesman 20:35, 9 August 2017 (EDT)

Fellowship of the Ring (Canadian printing)

You verified this third Canadian printing. If it is Canadian, the currency should be C$. I've updated the second, fourth and fifth, as well as the sixth which I can also verify. I don't know if you were the one generating the entries based on the 45th printing (the note is also in your third but that proves nothing), but you're the only one who left a name anywhere. When I updated the sixth, the publication date listed in the book was off by a month from what the 45th had. Doesn't make it more accurate, but I left the note about the difference from later printings. Anyway, the first printing has two entries - one generated by whoever did the 45th printing and one by Bluesman who verified a copy with a one-month difference in the dates. I've told him. I don't know if there are later Canadian printings generated by the 45th. EOBD (End of Brain Dump). Doug H 16:41, 30 August 2017 (EDT)

This was probably my mistake. Maybe a cut & paste error. Ballantine didn't do any Canadian printings, Methuan did. Ive removed the Canadian reference to the notes.Don Erikson 15:01, 10 October 2017 (EDT)

Possible typos in What If?

In the record for What If? The World's Foremost Military Historians Imagine What Might Have Been, there are two possible typos: "D Day Fails: Atomic Alternatives in Europe" on p. 341, and "A Qiagmire Avoided?" on p. 393. Could you check if those are right? --Vasha 21:43, 8 September 2017 (EDT)

How to Write Tales of Horror, Fantasy & Science Fiction

I have your addition of "How to Write Tales of Horror, Fantasy & Science Fiction" on hold. This appears to be the same publication as this one since your publication note states first printing. It is likely that Locus1 had the wrong price. Unless I'm missing something, please cancel this edit and update the other publication instead. You can keep the date and include a note that the date is per Locus1. Otherwise, let me know if I'm missing something. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:15, 10 October 2017 (EDT)

My copy has a price of $14.99 not $12.95. I think they are different. (Unless I somehow entered the wrong price, I'm a little outta practice here.) What's more likely, that Locus is wrong by more than $2 or theirs is a 3rd printing? Another clue is publishers dropped the $X.95 prices and went to $X.99 ones later. I could be wrong but I think it isn't the same.Don Erikson 17:41, 10 October 2017 (EDT)
I accepted your edit. OCLC is showing a 1987 edition with that same ISBN. However, they may be confusing it with this version. Undated seems the best approach for now unless you find something more. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:59, 10 October 2017 (EDT)

BTW it would be a matter of opinion whether to interpret the book's "Mary E. Wilkins (Freeman)" as "Mary E. Wilkins" or "Mary E. Wilkins Freeman." Swords Against Death IV

Hi, Don. You have both Zebra editions of [this]. I just picked up a Canadian one with the same artwork and found a signature on it. Horse on the front cover, follow its left rear leg to edge of the art. Looks like six letters, possible ZESMER but that seems weird and matches nothing. Can you see anything more/different? Thanks! --~ Bill, Bluesman 15:34, 23 October 2017 (EDT)

Under magnification it looks to me to say SHERMAN. Of the three Shermans on ISFDB who are artist none seem to fit the style or timeline for this cover. The H could be an L and the A an O or it may not be writing at all.Don Erikson 17:39, 23 October 2017 (EDT)
Thanks for checking. It occurred to me that SAD V has similar art and might have a better sig? --~ Bill, Bluesman 15:59, 24 October 2017 (EDT)

Iceworld: my copy matches this record apart from the copyright page which states “Printed in Canada” (Back cover states “Cover printed in the U.S.A.”). Please let me know if you disagree. --Vasha 15:51, 5 November 2017 (EST)

Deals with the Devil

The title page for this pub says 'Twelve Stories from Deals with Devil'. I think the title of the entry should be changed as well.TAWeiss 20:54, 12 November 2017 (EST)

I have changed the title according to the submission by TAWeiss. Please rechange if that was not correct (and please check als the 1966 edition of this anthology). Christian Stonecreek 02:32, 13 November 2017 (EST)
And I did the same according to the same editor for the 1961 edition of Finney's Body Snatchers. We do assign titles by titlle pages (beginning pages for content items). Christian Stonecreek 05:15, 14 November 2017 (EST)

Non-genre stories

I have looked through Tales for a Rainy Night which you verified and marked all but four stories non-genre. Also "The Whitechapel Wantons", in Red Jack and "The Hound" in Hounds of Hell.. --Vasha 12:43, 15 November 2017 (EST)

The 3rd Fontana Book of Great Horror Stories

re The 3rd Fontana Book of Great Horror Stories: There is some confusion in the notes regarding the various editions of this pub. Would you mind double checking the title page of your edition to see if it's "3rd" or "Third"? The cover shows "Third" and there is not a note regarding the title page being different. Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 19:11, 16 November 2017 (EST)

Is "Third" throughout. Fixed.Don Erikson 19:30, 16 January 2018 (EST)

The Phantom Detective

I discovered today that the author Robert Wallace of the Phantom Detective series, is actually a house pseudonym. Consequently, I made variant titles of those titles in the database. At the same time, I noticed that almost all of the titles in this series were of the form "The Phantom Detective: <story title>". Our policy is to omit the series title in the title field for individual title records, even when it appears on the title page. I recall that there was a post to this effect several years ago, possibly in the Rules and Standards forum. I have thus updated all the titles to remove "The Phantom Detective:" from the individual title records, for all the titles in the series except those that you have verified. I'd be happy to update those as well, but I wanted to check with you first. I have gone ahead and made variants of these, giving them the title as they originally appeared in The Phantom Detective magazine. Let me know if you agree. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 10:35, 18 November 2017 (EST)

Gog

According to Heritage auctions, the cover to Gog is by 'Stephen Miller'. The entry in ISFDB says 'Steve Miller'. I'm not clear if source of the artist is from the book or another online source. Can you check? Thanks TAWeiss 22:31, 25 November 2017 (EST)

Don, as you have not been active, I've gone ahead and approved the change (plus added the source to the pub notes). If it turns out the pub actually used 'Steve Miller', it will need to be disambiguated from the author with the same name and a pseudonym established. Please check when you get back and let me know. I'll make any necessary corrections. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:02, 20 December 2017 (EST)

Spacehawk, Inc

Spacehawk, Inc; after a query from a Moderator and posting a question on the Help pages it has been agreed that the page number of the drawing at the front of the book should be 2 – without the square brackets. The actual novel starts at Page 5 so square brackets would only be applied if the drawing was more than 4 pages before that. --AndyjMo 12:12, 27 November 2017 (EST)

I did make the change as stated but another Moderator changed it back to [2]. --AndyjMo 11:52, 9 January 2018 (EST)

Jim Sternako should be Jim Steranko

Nightshade

There is an error in your verified recird for Nightshade: "The Happy Autumn Fields" should be by Elizabeth Bowen. --Vasha 06:37, 17 December 2017 (EST)

I have gone ahead and made the change based on the Amazon Look Inside of the TOC. Don, please double check this whenever you return. If it turns out that the publication mistakenly credited the story to Max Beerbohm on the title page, let us know and I will make the necessary corrections. -- JLaTondre (talk) 11:49, 17 December 2017 (EST)
Bowen is correct.Don Erikson 19:16, 16 January 2018 (EST)
