Rick Rubin's Final Mission/Muster

Could you double check "Final Mission" in Pournelle's Men of War. A member of the FictionMags Yahoo group has pointed out that this should be "Final Muster" giving this sale listing as reference. Given the matching dates it looks like it is probably the same story. If the title differs, we should probably check with the other verifiers and make the variant title if warranted. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 22:39, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

It is "Muster" and not "Mission". I'll fix it.Don Erikson 17:49, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Yurth Burden

Your verified edition of this novel credits Jack Gaughan for the cover art. User Attilios led me to the true artist (Vicente Segrelles) here. I corrected my edition and added a note about this, if you agree yours should also be changed. Thanks, --Willem H. 08:43, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Aliens 1: Zum Überleben Verdammt

Hello, Don! I accepted your submission, but I think that there should be some fine tuning:

1) It probably should read Zum Überleben verdammt (small v) as the german spelling in headings differs from the English regulations.

2) I'd drop Aliens 1 as this only is the title of the overall series (just as in the original) and will automatically displayed once the title is varianted to its original.

3) We have the publisher in the database as 'Goldmann' only, 'Verlag' just means publishing house.

4) There once was a discussion that lead to that we have the european prices also as 12.90 instead of 12,90. It is the international standard as well as our's, despite what's printed on a given publication. Thanks, Christian Stonecreek 10:39, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

I followed each of your recommendations and fixed it.Don Erikson 17:42, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Legacy of Sorn Fen

Your verified Garan the Eternal (fifth printing) includes Legacy of Sorn Fen. All the other editions of the this publication (including your verified first printing), list it as Legacy from Sorn Fen. Would you mind double checking this title and either correct or variant as appropriate? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 13:14, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

It is 'from". I'll fix it.Don Erikson 18:26, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
I approved those two edits, but that was the long way to do it. It also required two more steps (merging the new record and deleting the old) which I completed. The easier way would have been to use advanced search and search on a title record of "Sorn Fen" and then merge the two records (the correct one and the wrong one). In the merge, you would have selected the correct record's information. That would have done it all in one step. -- JLaTondre (talk) 18:40, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Clone of The Anubis Gates

I'm holding your submission to clone the first printing of this because I think you may have misunderstood the statement on my verified record and the response I gave in your inquiry on my talk page.

My copy gives the art credit to Don Brautigan (note the final "n"), which is a misspelling of the artist's name (should end with "m"). Your clone submission keeps the same spelling in the Artist field, but the Note field states that your copy has a misspelled credit of Don Brautigam, when actually that is the correct spelling.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do? Mhhutchins 18:16, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

The Mummy or Ramses the Damned

The cover that you added to this edition doesn't match mine. Mine has no artwork and is all black. Did you add the cover to the wrong edition? Or does your edition match all the details that I entered when I verified this one? -- JLaTondre (talk) 22:47, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

A far as I can tell it matches exactly. Maybe mine was a change in the print run, you know they probably printed a lot, maybe even divided between more than one printer. A few days ago I uploaded 2 images of Melanie Rawns DRAGON PRINCE [3], both a first printing, so it does happen. Both books should be shown & noted I guess. Ballantine seems to be good at giving correct printing numbers but then how would really know.Don Erikson 00:00, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
Yeah. It makes the dates a bit suspect, but we have to go with what's in the books. Since your image was already uploaded, I cloned the pub, uploaded my image, and then moved my verification to the new pub. Can you confirm that the piece on page 1 of this publication is credited to Jerry Pournelle? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 17:09, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

I guss this is some sloppiness on my account. There's n author mentioned in the book. Stewart or Pournelle? There's no evidence one way or another, so I'm going to unverify this.Don Erikson 18:11, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
If there is no credit, then it should be credited to "uncredited". I'll correct the record, if that matches your copy, regardless of whether you choose to do a verification of it or not. Mhhutchins 18:50, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

The Avenger

This is a title series and not a publication series, unless the numbering of the paperback reprints differ from the order in which the original novels were published. I've accepted the submissions and will let you decide if the series data should go into the title records or the publication records. Mhhutchins 06:02, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

They were published out of order after #4. Don Erikson 17:36, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
This record's ISBN is missing a number. And are you certain it's an ISBN? Paperback Library was rather late when it started using ISBNs. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 06:04, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
I fixed it.Don Erikson 17:36, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
The two books you added (#12 and #13) match the numbering of the title series. According to Wikipedia:
In 1972, Warner Paperback Library reprinted most of the Avenger novels in a series of paperback editions, all credited to Kenneth Robeson. After reprinting the 24 original novels (by Ernst), Warner ignored the short stories of Tepperman, and instead commissioned Ron Goulart to produce a further dozen titles. These fit chronologically after the six stories by Tepperman, but are numbered by Warner starting from #25.
So the deviation doesn't start until #25, and since we would only number the books, and not the 6 stories, it would appear that it's actually a title series. I've started doing that with the other books in the series. You can continue to add publication records to the publication series based on the numbers given in the books, but they'll probably also match the title series numbering. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:16, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Added notes about "co-author" (only mentioned on copyright page) to Those Who Favor Fire.SFJuggler 23:50, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

I accepted the submission updating this record, but removed the credit to Kurland from the author field. Unless she is credited on the title page, she should not be given as an author in the publication record. If there is sufficient evidence that she is an uncredited co-author, you can variant the title record giving her as a co-author. But I'm not certain her contributions would be enough to warrant a co-author credit. Mhhutchins 01:44, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

"Till Death Do Us Part" in Witch Fantastic

You might want to flip open the cover of the later printing and see if it has the same notice concerning Spider Robinson]. If it does you might want to update the listing.SFJuggler 01:43, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
Good idea. I'll do that.Don Erikson 16:33, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
If you change the author credit on a publication record, it must also be changed in the author field of the title record. In this case, this version will have to be unmerged from the title record which credits only Nowlan. But before we do that, you must confirm that Spider Robinson is credited on the title page of the book, not just in a notice. As per ISFDB standards, publication records should credit author based on the title page. If you believe that Robinson should be credited as the co-author of the work, then the title record will have to be a variant of a title record crediting both Nowlan and Robinson. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:15, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
Actually Robinson only appears on the page 1 notice in both printings.
One other thing: the artist for the back cover should not be credited in the "Cover Artist" field. That can be credited by adding a content record of INTERIORART, giving "bc" as the page number. Mhhutchins 21:19, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
I'll hold off until the other matter is settled and go "bc" with the Ellis.Don Erikson 22:25, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
I also don't understand the series into which the title has been placed. Mhhutchins 23:52, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers fotonovel

It appears that there are two records for the same edition of this title. The first was verified by Bluesman here and credits Jack Finney. You copy here credits Richter, which seems to be the appropriate credit since this is based on the screenplay. Also, you should consider changing it from NOVEL to CHAPTERBOOK, adding a SHORTFICTION record for the screenplay. In any case, it should be removed from the title record for Finney's novel, since this is not his novel at all. I'll direct Bluesman here so the two of you can reconcile the differences and delete one. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Victoria Tales of Terror

Re this publication: Can you confirm that the story on page 120 is credited to "Anon." and not "Anonymous"? Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:03, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

"It is "Anon." on the ToC but "Anonymous" on the story page. So I'll change it. >>LATER<< OK so maybe I won't. If edit it as a writers name then it would change the other printings, but I don't for sure what they show. And is this treated like a pseudonym. Would you be so kind as change it, I'd probably just screw it up? Thanx.Don Erikson 21:00, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Space on My Hands

Hello. I've got two remarks to make about this pub :

  • I can't find any indication of price (25c) on the book, but only an indirect allusion to it under the lists of hard-to-get books at the end. Shouldn't this (or some other source) be mentioned in the notes ?
  • Copyright page has : “Bantam Edition Published January, 1953" / “1st Printing.........December, 1952”. This makes me think it is the same pub (second printing) as this unverified one, where an editor has entered in the notes : “"2nd printing ....... January 1953" noted in printing history on copyright page of 3rd printing [May '80]”.

Thanks for your views on the matter. Linguist 10:34, 31 July 2014 (UTC).

Also replaced Bookscans image with a new cover scan. Linguist 10:47, 31 July 2014 (UTC).

It was a common practice at that time that paperbacks were 25¢ even if they were unmarked. But your right, it should be noted and I'll do that.
Also a common practice publishers up until the 1990's would date their books month earlier maybe to allow distribution lag time. But in this case I believe what has happened here is the "Publishing date" is the release date while the "Printing date" is the date of manufacture. If seen this in other examples of both hardback & paperback of this practice.
And besides the 3rd printing says "Bantam Edition/January 1953 2nd printing.....January 1953 3rd printing.....May 1980" which clearly shows that there were two printings in the same month. If the 1st was in December 1952 I think they would have mentioned it. But in the end it's can all be so confusing.Don Erikson 18:56, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Dramocles

Hello, I suppose that your copy of this french pb is this one, in this case, the title page is misleading (it's a copy of the 1st french printing) as the publisher is in fact "Le livre de poche" and the book is part of this publication series with #7099. Note also that artist already exists under a simpler canonical name here. Hauck 19:59, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Also remember to variant title records for translations to the parent title, after the submitted pubs are in the database. I've done that for the French and German titles. Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:58, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
I also varianted Chasseur/victime and Der grüne Jademond. Mhhutchins 17:05, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Sheckley's Das Jäger-Spiel

Please confirm the ISBN in this publication. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:42, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Also, it's better to create variants after the title is in the database. So create a record for the translated publication. After it's in the databaase, go back and variant its title record to the original title record. Mhhutchins 19:46, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps you'v not read my above request, but you can see we now have a publess title in the database. So again, it's better to create a publication record first, then variant its title record back to the original title. Mhhutchins 22:00, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
I did respond. I guess it didn't go through I screwed up somehow. So, I fixed the ISBN, it was wrong on the BC but good on the copyright page. I was so happy the Babelfish correctly translated "Journey Beyond Tomorrow" I forgot to check if was already there. I'll add variants 1st from now on.Don Erikson 22:14, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
My second message was about your creating publess title records, not about the ISBN, which I saw you'd corrected because I accepted the submission. I see you're still creating these variant records first. So please do it in this order: 1. Use the "Add New Novel" (or "Collection", etc.) function to create a publication record. 2. When that submission has been accepted go to its title record and use the "Make This Title a Variant Title or Pseudonymous Work" function to variant it to the original title. Mhhutchins 22:48, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
You also may notice that you created it as an English title, although it doesn't look like English to me! Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:04, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
I tought I might have after I did it. I'll more carefuller.Don Erikson 22:14, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

In your verified Incredible Tales, there are two listings for "The Brogue" (page 91 and page 97). Is this intentional? If so, would you please add notes to the publication and the title records that these are different stories? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:06, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

The Cave of Time

The 1st through 6th printings for 278293 include the note "Date from 7th printing."

Could you please check your verified 7th printing of The Cave of Time to see if the printing history table has June 1979 for both the 1st and 2nd printing? I have the 12th printing and it has:

A Bantam Book / July 1979
2nd printing ... June 1979
...

If Bantam received enough book orders prior to a planned July 1979 release it's possible they did a second print run in June. For now, I've added a note to the 1st printing about what the 12th printing states. --Marc Kupper|talk 20:38, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Dreamsnake

Hi. You left a note on my talk page that you added the Canadian price to this pub. Since the note is 5 months old I thought you wouldn't notice any changes I made to it, so I'm taking the discussion here to your talk page. Anyway, I double-checked the book and I couldn't find a Canadian price on it, only U.K., Australia, New Zealand and Rep. of Ireland (all on the back cover). I noticed, though, that the pub record, as it currently stands, does not contain the Canadian price you were talking about, so there is no actual issue. I just wanted to let you know my findings, in case you wish to comment. Cheers, Patrick -- Herzbube Talk 09:00, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

I think it was autocorrect. I may have tried to note other international prices.Don Erikson 17:27, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

The Lad and the Lion

Hi, according to Ace Image Library and Illustration Exchange, the cover artist for this publication is Sanjulian. Could you perform the update? Horzel 13:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Wizard of Tizare

Hi. You are listed as the primary verifier for The Wizard of Tizare. My copy has "Wizard of Tizare" (no "The") on the title page and throughout and the publication date is given as January 1990 rather than 1989. Locus1 gives "The Wizard of Tizare" published in Jan 1990. Are you happy for me to make these changes and verify? --AliHarlow 20:27, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Also, can you confirm that the afterword in this verified record is correctly titled? I have a later printing of this omnibus and the title is "Author's Afterword". Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 23:14, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes it is. Same as the earlier Ace printing.Don Erikson 23:16, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Just to be clear, the record I linked above is the first Ace omnibus printing. Are you saying that this afterword appears in an earlier Ace printing of one or more of the individual works of the series? Mhhutchins 23:28, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Sorry. I got it turned around. The text pf both Ace printings are he same.Don Erikson 17:35, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Out of the Dead City

To make the publication record match what was stated in the publication I updated a your verified Out of the Dead City to change the title of the introduction from Introduction (Out of the Dead City) to Author's Note (The Fall of the Towers) and also made this a variant title of Author's Note on the Revision of this Edition (The Fall of the Towers).

I also added a title note to Author's Note on the Revision of this Edition as the text of the essays is not exactly exactly the same. --Marc Kupper|talk 01:29, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

I also updated the notes with

  • This publication does not contain the Prologue that appears in other editions.

The Werewolf Principle

Re this record: Perhaps you meant to remove the note about no printing stated? When you're adding a new publication/edition/printing to a title, it's usually best to use the "Add Publication to This Title" function instead of the "Clone This Pub" function. You avoid the possibility of accidentally failing to replace or delete data from the parent publication record. I would suggest only using the "Clone" function if you're adding a record which has similar contents, like a COLLECTION or ANTHOLOGY. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:26, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes I meant to remove it, and will. I try to only clone when there's only slight difference and a usable cover scan. I'll be more careful in the future.Don Erikson 23:46, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

When We Were Good

I think the record you want to add is identical to this one. Don't let the link to the Amazon image fool you. Just because it has a Canadian maple leaf doesn't mean the record stands for the Canadian edition. We can't control Amazon or its partners from changing the image files. The first editing of the ISFDB was adding Norton cover images any years ago. Many weren't used because I didn't know what I was doing. BTW if you upload a new image for an old one hosted by ISFDB sometimes it initially won't show the new one until the hardware has a chance to catch up, but it has gone through. Second Stage Lensmen/Lensman

I have a question about a couple of your verified Second Stage Lensmen, specifically the 8th printing and the 11th printing of the Pyramid edition. I changed the title. Because both title version exist I hope this simple spelling change is enough to do the job.Don Erikson 19:21, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Penelope or Phyllis?

The title given on the cover of this publication doesn't match the publication record. Does the title page give a different title? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 17:37, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

It is all wrong. I've requested the removal of this Publication, PHYLLIS, as it is the wrong info for this title. I will then enter the book PENELOPE under its own name.Don Erikson 19:54, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
But the cover matches everything about the record except for the title. Is it possible that the record was just entered under the wrong title record? If that's so, just correct the title field and then unmerge it from its current title record. There was no need to remove the image from the record or delete the record from the database.
