Serling's Stories from the Twilight Zone

Can you verify that the records in this collection are the story adaptations and not the teleplays? Someone has made submissions changing the title records for each of the stories (I accepted two of them before I stopped to consider they may be wrong.) Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 04:56, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Please disregard. The situation has been resolved. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:33, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Responding to questions on your user talk page

When you get a chance, could you take some time to respond to some of the questions that have been posted here, starting with those at the end of October? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:34, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay. I will will now go back and answer inquiries in chronological order.Don Erikson 21:06, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

De Camp and Pratt's (The) Land of Unreason

I found and added a cover scan for your verified pub. I also noticed that the title from the cover scan seems to be "Land of Unreason" instead of "The Land of Unreason" as the record is listed. Could you double check the title page and see if we've got it under the correct variant of the title? Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 13:24, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

It is "Land of Unreason". Don Erikson 17:32, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
I've moved it to the variant title. Thanks for checking. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 00:14, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Date for the 1st edition of Life, the Universe and Everything

According to the listing in Locus #261 (October 1982) the Pan first edition paperback was published in August 1982. This is corroborated by the date given on Amazon.co.uk: "13 Aug 1982". Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:45, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

UK books don't seem to give the month of publication as often as US books. This as usual doesn't either. I will add the month and note its source.Don Erikson 19:25, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
The submission had the note, but no addition of the month. I made it August (1982-08-00). --MartyD 02:18, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

1977 Ace ed. of The Mucker

Can you check the ISBN given for this pub? It's 11 digits long. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:31, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

It's fixed know. Don Erikson 19:19, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Pinnacle UK

Do you suppose the "Pinnacle UK" for this could be this Pinnacle / Goulden? The years and author seem to coincide.... --MartyD 02:28, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

"Pinnacle UK" is what The Whole Science Fiction Data Base No. 4 says and I'm guessing to differentiate from the US publisher. After further research it is Pinnacle / Goulden and I will change the entry.Don Erikson 18:16, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Thuvia Maid of Mars submissions

Hi Don, I have two of your Thuvia Maid of Mars submissions on hold. These are making major changes to existing, verified pubs and look like maybe you meant to clone instead. Would you confirm? If you meant them to be clones, here's the info you supplied.

Against 288439:

1973-00-00
0450016951
£0.30
Information on this book from The Whole Science Fiction Data Base No. 4, ABE and WorldCat. 16245614 Cover artist uncredited. No visible signature.

Against 236669:

1986-05-00

18th printing. Information on this book from The Whole Science Fiction Data Base No. 4 & ABE.

Thanks. --MartyD 02:55, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes they were both to be clones. I will redo each.Don Erikson 17:30, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Cover art credit based on Whole SF Database 4

Can you make certain that the artist credit for the 1957 Doubleday edition is Robert Vickrey. I have the 1975 Knopf edition in which he is credited and the covers are not the same. Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:42, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

According to the book "Ray Bradbury: the life of fiction" by Jonathan R. Eller & William F. Touponce [1] they are two different cover illustrations by the same artist. I will make note for each entry to clarify things.Don Erikson 21:34, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar

Can you check the catalog number for this printing? It doesn't line up with other printings nor Four Square's other titles. Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:59, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Looks like I read the number from the line above. I have fixed it.Don Erikson 18:03, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Ron Walosky=Ron Walotsky

I've corrected a few of your latest submissions from "Walosky" to "Walotsky". Can you check to see if the error is in the credit or the submission? Also, can you check the spelling in this pub? Thanks. Mhhutchins 03:04, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

When it comes to errors, they are usually mine. But as to the Guin book, that's how it's spelled on the copyright page.Don Erikson 18:10, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for checking. I'll make a pseudonym for "Walosky" and create a variant for the Guin cover. I corrected the spelling on the submissions for these records: 1, 2, 3, and 4. Do you know if any of them also credit "Walosky"? Thanks again. Mhhutchins 18:27, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
I got the cover credit from the artist signature, typoed the the first entry and auto fill propagated the further typos.Don Erikson 18:51, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
I discovered I was making the same mistake, and just turned the auto-fill off. It wasn't worth the effort, and this is coming from someone whose entered thousands of pubs. Mhhutchins 19:57, 6 February 2011 (UTC)

Tarzan and the Ant Men

I'm holding a submission that wants to update this record, making it into a second printing with a 1962 date. I believe you wanted to clone it for a new record. If so, please cancel the submission and resubmit as a clone. Thanks. Another thing: it may be the case of auto-fill repeating an error, but I've corrected quite a number of submissions that state "Month of date..." when I think you meant "Month of publication...". Like this one which I've left as is. Mhhutchins 18:11, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Aargh! Did it again, and I thought I was being so careful. I will fix it. Also "Month of publication" is better than what I was using, I will use this for now on. Thanks. Don Erikson 18:17, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Tarzan and the Lost Empire submissions

Hi Don. I think something may be mixed up/wrong with one of your Tarzan and the Lost Empire submissions. I approved this Cassell/1932 edition. Now I've run into your proposed update of this Cassell/1931 edition that would set the date to 0000-00-00, but add the same page count/price/cover artist as on the 1932 one you added, and it also includes a comment about the month being from the Whole Science Fiction Database No. 4. I'm not sure what's up -- maybe a typoed date the system turned into 0000-00-00? Let me know. I have it on hold for now. Thanks. --MartyD 12:21, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Took care of these two problems.

For this one, your change added a price of 2/6 (and no cover artist) and a note about the source of the cover artist (and no mention of price). I approved it but the end result probably needs another edit. --MartyD 12:30, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I fixed this too.Don Erikson 19:40, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Afterword checking

Hello, Don. I just wanted to check if this afterword is in your verified pub of the 1975 novel by Foster, too, but I don't own that one. Do you still own it and could check it? Thanks. Stonecreek 13:26, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes it does and so does the other three DAW edition I have.Don Erikson 19:55, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Added the afterword by Foster to it. Is it safe to assume then to add this item to the other ones by DAW in the pub list? Stonecreek 16:27, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
After seeing that some later DAW printings have (according to the biblio page) 303 pages instead of 278. This would mean a resetting of the type and if they were going to include the afterword it would be with these. BUT I don't see them NOT including it being it is a relevant part of the whole.Don Erikson 22:13, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

The Time Trap Gambit cover image

I replaced the Amazon UK cover image with an actual cover scan for your verified The Time Trap Gambit. AndonSage 15:38, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

At the Earth's Core

Scanned in an image [broken link], added the interior art and changed the artist [was credited to Roy G. Krenkel but the book has Roy Krenkel, Jr.] and added a couple of notes for [this] --~ Bill, Bluesman 17:09, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Tarzan and the Lion Men

The update of this pub only included the price, not the cover artist info. Mhhutchins 02:23, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Also, in this printing is the cover artist credited as "Bob Abbet", or could it be a typo of Bob Abbett who did many other Ballantine Tarzan covers. Mhhutchins 02:26, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
Both fixed.Don Erikson 20:05, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Tarzan & the Castaways

Have a submission on hold. Cloned, I assume from the [September 1977] record? Higher price, different ISBN but retains the 1977 date? There is a [1988] record that matches both price and ISBN. --~ Bill, Bluesman 18:43, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

I deleted the old entry and redid it.Don Erikson 17:50, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

The Eternal Lover

Hi Don. Your edit to The Eternal Lover added a note about the source of the month of publication, but it did not supply a month. --MartyD 01:31, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

It's now fixed.Don Erikson 17:51, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Phyllis Eisenstein, "In the Hands of Glory"

You are the primary verifier for this book, which is listed in the ISFDB as having a publication date of Oct. 1981. My copy has all the data identical to this one, is a 1st printing according to the number line, but claims a publication date of Nov. 1981. Can you check to see whether this was a data entry mistake, or whether there is some other weird issue going on? Thanks, Chavey 02:41, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Chavey is right. I changed the date and added notes. Thanks, --Willem H. 19:36, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Old As the World

The ISBN for [this] though valid, brings up a completely different publication. A typo? --~ Bill, Bluesman 19:27, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Searching WorldCat for this book brought one with a similar tile and even though I noticed and fixed it when first entered it, I gooofed up somewhere. Fixed now.Don Erikson 18:55, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

The Road of Kings

I'm sure you meant to clone [this] but the submission was going to overwrite/edit instead. Nice try, though!! ;-) --~ Bill, Bluesman 20:11, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Same with [this] publication. --~ Bill, Bluesman 20:16, 19 March 2011 (UTC)
Both re-entered.Don Erikson 16:15, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Phantom Detective

I could find nothing that would indicate these stories to be speculative, but I accepted them based on their inclusion in the Whole SF DB. A few of them appear to have duplicate catalog numbers which I need you to check: this and this are both CR106, and this and this are both CR139. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:25, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Also, there are other titles in the series (which you didn't enter) that show the publisher as Regency Books but with the same catalog numbering system. Could "CR" stand for Corinth Regency and it's really one publisher? Mhhutchins 00:27, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Ya, I realized that there probably sosme errors and I was planning to go back and check every one. maybe today sometime.Don Erikson 19:38, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
There I've fixed the problems. But now to the Publisher question. Of the copies I own, the covers say "A Regency Suspense Novel - The Phantom Detective Book No.(#)", the title page says Regency but copyright page says Corinth. So I guess you're right. Should I change them all to "Regency Corinth" or just "Regency" or just leave as a separate imprint? And the reason why the CR number later is different than the series number is that they started to also print the "Operator 5" and "Dusty Aires" series.Don Erikson 20:42, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Corinth appears to be the publisher and Regency is one of their imprints. You can enter "Regency / Corinth". Or if you think "Regency Suspense Novel" is a publication series, show the publisher field as Corinth and add "Regency Suspense Novel" in the publication series field. Mhhutchins 01:20, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
About half of ABE sellers use Corinth, the rest Regency, so I'll replace Corinth with Regency / Corinth because it will allow a search for Corinth to find this publisher. I think "Regency Suspense Novel" is just a description of content and not an actual series, I'll put "The Phantom Detective" in the series field. But I'll hold off for now for further comments.Don Erikson 18:47, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Phantom Detective series

The Publication Series field is not for this kind of series. It's intended for such as ACE Doubles/TOR Doubles/Gollancz SF MAsterworks/etc. The kind of series you want is an Author/particular universe series and that is created from the title records of the pubs. --~ Bill, Bluesman 17:36, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

That's what I get for trying something different. So should we just cancel all the chanfes or is there a simple fix on your end?Don Erikson 17:47, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
I did the same thing first day the new field was introduced! No easy fix. All I can do is accept/reject. Even if the Publication part could be mass-deleted, I think each record would have to manually 'adjusted'. Unfortunately I didn't see these until you'd entered the lot. --~ Bill, Bluesman 17:58, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
OK, just dump the lot & I'll redo.Don Erikson 18:20, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

The God Machine

According to the OCLC record which you linked to this record the author is "William Jon Watkins" instead of "William John Watkins". Can you recheck your source? Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:50, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Same for this record. I think you may have entered these two under the wrong title record, and that they should have been entered under this record. Mhhutchins 00:53, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
Sorry it took so long to get around to this. I see you took care of it yourself. Turns out The WSFDB doesn't differentiate between the two spellings, so it's good you fixed it.Don Erikson 20:10, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

The Cybernetic Brains by Jones

Someone added a comment to this pub. When you get a chance can you check the cover art credit? Thanks. Mhhutchins 03:20, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

See below.Don Erikson 20:18, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Cybernetic Brains

A new editor wants to change the artist credit for [this] from Richard Powers to Jerome Podwil. I agree the style is not Powers', but someone has used Jane Frank's book to give as a source. There is a [note] left by the new editor claiming a signature. Does your copy have one? The cover on mine is noticeably moved down/cropped so it might be cut off. Thanks! --~ Bill, Bluesman 01:18, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

When I first entered this Frank's book I had my doubts, but she was the expert. I now checked my copy and the signature is mostly cropped out with just the tippy-top of what could be a "P" showing. So if others say it is Podwil I will not disagree and will change it.Don Erikson 20:23, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Still waiting to hear back from the new editor about this. Hauck's copy seems to have a little more of the signature showing, as per [this] discussion. At least we all agree it's not Powers! Maybe that's how Jane Frank got confused, as Podwil's scrawl isn't all that different from Powers'! For the moment I'll just put your submission on hold [I have the other one to make the same change, only without re-doing the note, on hold as well] until I/we hear back from Baseman [no relation ;-)]. Thanks for looking! --~ Bill, Bluesman 20:35, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
An aside: you may want to Archive some of this page. It's taking quite a while to load each time. I noticed a comment above about a computer being "a little box that does magic things" so if you want some help...? :-) --~ Bill, Bluesman 20:38, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
There. I've archived back from the beginning of the year. I used the instruction to archive from the archived instruction from the first set of archived archiving archive....my head hurts.Don Erikson 21:09, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Take two Guinness and call me in the morning! ;-) --~ Bill, Bluesman 21:35, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

A favor

I'm approving the submissions which are removing the source as hard copy issues of Locus (I know...I entered them all). All I ask is that you do a primary verification of these records, without which there might be later questions about the source of the data. In fact, it would help anyone moderating the submissions if you verify the records before making the updates. (Moderators get a warning that the update is for a verified record.) That way we know the source of the changes is a primary source. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:03, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

OK I'll do as you ask. So to be clear I should verify first and wait for an OK before re-editing an entry? Sound doable. Don Erikson 20:30, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Verification doesn't require approval. So you won't have to wait for a response. Once the record has been verified, proceed to update the record to match the pub in hand. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:39, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

The Diploids and 7 Other Stories

Hi, I uploaded a cover scan for this publication, and added the OCLC, and a catalog# 95-228 as found on the front cover, as I could not make the ISBN from the SBN on the spine (532-00228) Gave the SBN as well in the notes, together with the OCLC.--Dirk P Broer 14:29, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Horrors, Horrors, Horrors

Does this second printing actually give 1978 as the date of publication? Mhhutchins 21:20, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

I thought I already answered this, it didn't seem to go through. You are right & I fixed it.Don Erikson 18:50, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

In the Slipstream

Can you confirm the publisher's name of this book? The OCLC record give it as FC2, which I assume stands for Fiction Collective 2. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 21:09, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

The title page says "Norman / Tallahassee" with the FC2 logo underneath but the copyright says Published by FC2 with support provided by Florida State University and the Illinois State University , one being in Tallahassee and the other in Norman. So I guess I screwed up and will fix it.Don Erikson 18:59, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Juniper Time by Wilhelm

I'm holding a submission that's identical in almost all details to this record. Is there some difference that I'm not seeing? Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:49, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

To tell you the truth, I don't even remember doing this one. So cancelled it.Don Erikson 00:03, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Pursuit of the Screamer

New image, expanded notes for [this]. Does your copy have the odd red background in the DAW block top right? I added a note about it then thought maybe the cover for the Canadian edition [though printed in the US] just might be different. --~ Bill, Bluesman 16:16, 7 June 2011 (UTC)

I was surprised myself, it is red instead of the normal yellow.Don Erikson 19:53, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

The Sword of the Dawn

New image, added maps to contents, expanded the notes some, for [this] --~ Bill, Bluesman 23:41, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Blade: Kingdom of Royth

Avon Ghost Reader

Can you verify the titles of two stories in this pub? Is the story by M. R. James titled "The Haunted Doll's House" or "The Haunted Dolls' House" (note placement of the apostrophe) and is the story by John Collier titled "The Bottle Party" or simply "Bottle Party"? Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:44, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Sorry but I can't verify these story titles because I copied the contents of this from a WordCat entry. I checked the stories against previous ISFDB listings. I admit I didn't think to check the apostrophe and should have noted that the "The" was maybe just a WorldCat mistake. (It wouldn't be the 1st one I've noticed their entry for this book listed the story "Wingless Victory" as "Wineglass"). So should I will edit the note section to indicate that the content may be incorrect & from WorldCat?Don Erikson 20:29, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

The Enemy

Hi Don. You have verified publication 314927 which is the Hyperion edition of The Enemy with a date of 2010-05-18. This has an Amazon Look Inside where we can see the copyright page states:

Text copyright © 2009 by Charlie Higson
First published in the U.K. by Puffin
...
Printed in the United States of America
First U.S. edition, 2010
1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2
...

Amazon reports the date as May 11, 2010. What's the source for your 2010-05-18 date?

I approved your addition of 354465 which is the Puffin edition of The Enemy but updated the record:

  • I changed the date from 2009-00-00 to 2009-09-03 to match the date given by Amazon.co.uk plus added notes about this.
  • I added a note about the cover artist.

I've e-mailed the cover designer to see who the artist was.

This looks like a popular book. My local library has five copies with all of them checked out. I'm not sure this qualifies as a work of fiction though. Ask anyone under 16 and they will say us old fogies are brainless, decomposing, flesh-eating creatures. :-) --Marc Kupper|talk 20:02, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

I just finished this book and if you are interested in zombie disaster I highly recommend it. Pretty intense for a YA novel.Don Erikson 16:45, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Splatter: A Cautionary Tale

There should also be a content record for the story itself added to this chapterbook record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:00, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

I have done as you suggested.Don Erikson 16:47, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Foreigner

Scanned a new image and added notes [there were none] to [this] --~ Bill, Bluesman 13:15, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Gene Wolfe chapterbooks

When creating a new chapterbook record, you have to also include a content record. In the case of the two Gene Wolfe books, each should have a content record of the short story. Also in one of them you gave a moderator note about the illustrator. This was probably meant to go into the Note field, not the Moderator Note field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:35, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Note to Moderator field

I think you're placing data into the Note to Moderator field that you mean to place into the regular note field. In the submission for this pub you placed the info about the Pamela Sargent afterword in the Moderator Note field. Keep in mind, that any data in this field does not become part of the record. The purpose of the field is to leave a message to the person who is moderating the submission. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:46, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Being that one can not enter contents when adding a new publication to a title I thought (obviously wrongly) that the the moderator could just stick it in. I guess I could have been clearer and just asked. I just didn't want to try and remember to add it later.Don Erikson 04:56, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
I was wondering about these notes, too. I didn't realize you can't add content when using Add Pub to This Title. Perhaps I'll have to go take a look at that code.... --MartyD 10:17, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
I've known that for awhile, but never thought to ask if it could be changed. Mhhutchins 17:58, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Berserker by Saberhagen

You updated this 13th printing, changing it to the 14th printing. I believe you meant to clone it. Mhhutchins 23:48, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

I'm going to reject the submission and ask that you resubmit it as a clone. Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:00, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
With the OK of the verifier, I changed his 13th printing with a 14th printing number line into a 14th printing of an unknown date and then added a 13th printing entry without a number line with a date that was previously on the 14th printing's entry. I hope that isn't as confusing as it might seem. If you need me to do it cloney-style that's good too.Don Erikson 04:51, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Now this would have been a good use of the Note to the Moderator field. :) If I'd known what your reasoning was for changing the record, I would have accepted it. Please resubmit the change and another submission for the new record. Mhhutchins 18:10, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
I was going to note it in the original entry but I forgot. Then I forgot to mention in the above response. Maybe it's that I am not used to it or maybe I'm just going stoopid.Don Erikson 16:32, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Gutter code dating

Actually, the printing date would be May 1976 for the reprint of 1975 Annual World's Best SF with the gutter code of "17S". If there's two numbers and the letter "S" it was printed in 1976. If there's a letter "S" followed by two numbers it was printed in 1977. It's all spelled out on this chart. Any printings with letters P, Q, R, or S in the mid 70s don't follow the usual pattern. It took the combined data of dozens of SFBC printings to determine the dating of gutter codes during these years. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:16, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

God Game

Hi, what the rationale for marking primary verification for this "N/A"? Cheers, P-Brane 01:16, 4 July 2011 (UTC).

I don't think rationale played a part in this verification. It was just a slip of the mouse I guess and I have fixed it.Don Erikson 22:21, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

The Ultimate Threshold

I added notes to this verified pub and changed the credit for the Anatoly Dnieprov stories from Dnieprov to Dneprov (as stated on copyright, contents an title pages). --Willem H. 19:40, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

Last of the Vampires: Collection or Chapbook?

Hi Don. Did you mean to make Last of the Vampires a COLLECTION, or should it be a CHAPTERBOOK instead? --MartyD 01:09, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

I started to enter it as a chapterbook but my source (The WSFDB6)called it collection. So I went with that. Do you think I should change it?Don Erikson 22:25, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
No, it was just a single-novella "collection" caught my eye, and with CHAPTERBOOK's being right next to COLLECTION in the menu, I thought it might have been a mis-click. Matching your source seems a good approach to me. --MartyD 00:55, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Beyond These Walls

The note for Beyond the Sealed World seems to confirm Shasta purchasing the story, but not that it ever actually got printed. BLongley 19:52, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Maybe there is a need for categorizing ghost editions.Don Erikson 22:28, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
That's why we have 8888-00-00 and 9999-00-00 "special" dates for "unpublished" and "unknown". In Al's absence, maybe Ahasuerus can explain how to use such if and when they do eventually appear? BLongley 01:32, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

"Flotsam" in The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2

I removed "Cirque de la Nuit" from The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 per your note. I see "Flotsam" didn't get a page number, and I didn't recall your noting anything about it (sorry if I missed that), so I figured I'd point it out to you. Also, do you suppose the same content changes should be made to the other two pubs associated with that title? Neither is verified, and my inclination would be to do it -- something from an actual publication of a different edition has to be better than an email as a one-off source.... --MartyD 01:22, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

I thought I'd fixed that, well it's fixed now. The UK Perseus edition seems to use the same type-setting as the US edition so I think they are interchangeable. I think fixing the title on the other editions would be the right thing to do.

As to page numbers, the LOVE BITES edition has the same mistaken page count as as the others. Maybe the its info was imported to later editions. I would have no problem adding page numbers from the US to the UK edition. BTW have others here noticed that the page count Amazon gives is rarely correct and is sometimes wildly afield?Don Erikson 17:19, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I know I've noticed it. It looks to me like they are often the count of physical pages (even though some may be ads or whatever). I think they are just initial estimates and final typesetting, artwork, etc., can lead to variations. I wonder if the publishers base them purely on word count.... --MartyD 10:31, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

The Flying Submarine

Hello, I've put your submission on Hold. In it, you state that the publisher is "Arthu H. Stockwell", isn't it "Arthur H. Stockwell" ? Hauck 18:54, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes it's Arthur. Don Erikson 21:56, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, i've released the sub. Hauck 07:48, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

S&J edition of The Man With A Thousand Names

The price for this hardcover edition seems very low. Can you confirm from your source? Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:17, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

That would have been quite a deal. But alas it is a paperback instead so I fixed it.Don Erikson 19:23, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Gutter codes for SFBC edition of Slan

Did your source for the gutter codes give the dates that you added to the note field of this record? "W5" should be January 1981, "W30" should be July 1981, and "AA27" would be July 1985 (as is confirmed later in the notes). Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 20:33, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

I had checked my source earlier against the ISFDB's gutter code reference and they jibed, so I guess I got lazy. I fixed it & learned lesson to boot.Don Erikson 20:58, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Adding line breaks in the note field

A big favor to ask: can you add a hard line break in HTML (<BR>) when starting a new line in a note field? Even though it make look like you're starting a new line, the system butts it right up to the previous line if you don't add the break. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:13, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

The Truth Is Out There

Worlds of Weird

I added a cover image to Worlds of Weird. I also changed the version of the Long story "Giants in the Sky" to the variant without the Jr. on his name, as it appears in the book. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 16:44, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Alternatives anthology

Can you please check your verified Alternatives for the "Kalvan Kingmaker" story? There is a discrepancy with the author(s), in that the story was written only by John F. Carr, and should not include Roland J. Green as a co-author. Thanks :) AndonSage 23:10, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Each story in this anthology has its own title page. The one for this story says "KALAVALN KINGMAKER" then "John F. Carr (with Roland Green)". It is Copyrighted by Carr alone. You're welcome. ठDon Erikson 23:50, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for checking that out. John didn't know why Roland was getting credit when the story was written by John alone. He said Baen must have added the "(with Roland J. Green)" and John hadn't known that.
I received my used copy of this book yesterday, and I was going to 2nd verify, when I noticed that the year on the record is 1989-04-00, but the copyright page has "First printing, May 1989." Can you check that, please? Thanks :) AndonSage 05:35, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
So the fourth month isn't May? Hmm... OK, I changed it and added a printing statement also. I have no excuses. (-¶ <=pirate. Don Erikson 19:35, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
I fixed the broken link for the cover image. Mhhutchins 20:35, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

"Golgotha" vs. "Golgatha" in Fantastica

Hi. Would you do me a favor and double-check the spelling on "Golgatha & Co." in Fantastica, which you just entered? We have another entry spelling it "Golgotha" (from Bleiler). I will see if I can find that on Google Books. Thanks. --MartyD 02:03, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

It is an "o" and I fixed it.Don Erikson 21:05, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Buffalito Destiny

Hello, just to inform you that, in accepting your sub for the HC, I took the liberty to correct the publisher to "Hadley Rille Books" (the I was missing). Hauck 05:30, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

I Killed Stalin

I accepted your submission of I Killed Stalin, but I changed the publisher to "Farrar, Straus and Young" instead of "Farrar, Straus & Young". Normally we want to match the book, but since you were referencing a secondary source I wanted to make the publisher match a publisher already in the database. It's likely they never published anything with '&' in the publisher name, that was just used as shorthand in the sources you used. Thanks Kevin 21:16, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Inconstant Moon edit

I had to reject an edit you made to one of the publications of Inconstant Moon. When Michael was dealing with your other submissions involving that title and its publications, he determined this publication record to be a duplicate of another entry and deleted it. That left this proposed edit going against a non-existent pub. --MartyD 16:33, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

The Web of Spider - cover and notes

I added a scanned cover image and notes to your verified The Web of Spider. AndonSage 05:49, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Star Rangers

I have a submission to update this pub, but it only adds a note about the source of the month, without actually adding the month to the record's date. I'm going to accept it and ask that you submit another update adding the month of publication from your source. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:24, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

I added the date so it is fixed.Don Erikson 21:38, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

"Puzzle of the Space Pyramids", by Eando Binder

The notes in your verified publication said "Contento lists this as a collection ...". While Contento does list the contents, as in the note, it actually says this is "fix-up novel", so I made a modest adjustment to those notes. Chavey 22:48, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Web of the Witch World

One of your submissions on this title was to create a Jan. 1984 printing of this title. But we already have an 11th printing dated May, 1983; and a 12th printing dated Feb. 1984. So there doesn't seem to be room for another printing between those two. Does the "Whole Science Fiction Data Base" give any other information as to which printing they're referring to? It seems likely that they are referring to the 12th printing, but have some reason to believe the publication date is different than the one listed in WorldCat. Chavey 16:32, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

It's been a couple of weeks, so I'm going to cancel this submission, but add a note to the listed 12th printing that the "Whole Science Fiction Data Base apparently lists a Jan. 1984 date for that printing". It seems likely that this is what's happening here -- folks being off by one month is pretty common (happens to Amazon all the time). If you think that's not the right solution, let me know. Chavey 23:01, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Charles Nuetzel's Jungle, Jungle

According to OCLC, this record has catalog number PP135. Can you double-check your source about the catalog number of Jungle, Jungle. Also, the OCLC number you linked to the latter record doesn't give a comma in the title. Does your source disagree with this? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 22:16, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

I haven't been here since October? I'm sorry to anyone who had to wait on any answers from me but I've been more than a little burned out lately. Life's big & little tragedies have been grinding me down, but all's better now. So I went and corrected the Jungle Jungle entry . There is NO comma and I fixed the catalog number from a ABE scan. Don Erikson 23:24, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Tomorrow Sucks

Can you check the ISBN of this record? There was no ISBN-13 in 1994. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:25, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

Better yet, check the publication date. I've a feeling this is a recent publication. Mhhutchins 23:30, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

I don't know how I missed the 2011 date on the copyright page but now I have fixed it.

Non-genre magazines

We only add non-genre magazines to the database if they include a piece of speculative fiction. The record you submitted was for a non-genre magazine that contained a nonfiction piece about a spec fic writer (Arthur C. Clarke in this case). Currently there is no standard for adding such publications. If you feel strongly that they should be included in the database, please start a discussion on one of the community pages. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:02, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

I see your point in general but the interview with Clarke is more general about the future and his work, and not specifically about the movie. Would not including an interview of an important writer just because of the format sort contrary to the goals of the ISFDB?Don Erikson 23:25, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
I see your point as well, and again suggest that you bring the topic up for discussion. That's the best way to change the standards. Mhhutchins 00:30, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

The Mummies of Guanajuato

Submission for this record was accepted, but I made a couple of changes. I gave the page count based on the OCLC record. In cases where a book is unpaginated, you can either count the pages yourself, or give the source for the page count, then enter the number in the page count field in brackets. Don't put the words "not paginated" into the field as this field is for numbers only. You can also just note it in the note field if you don't want to count the pages or look for a source that did. I also changed the format field to "tp" from "pb" based on your notes and the OCLC record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:35, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Whole SF Database #8

I accepted the submission adding this record, but it should have been entered as a new publication, and not a clone of this one. Now both of the books share the same title record. You'll have to unmerge #8 from this this title record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:49, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

I did the the unmurgimentation for this record. Next time I'll be smart (well smarterer) about cloning.Don Erikson 19:35, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

Excerpts should be titled in the format "Title of Work (excerpt)", not "(excerpt) Title of Work" as you did in this record. Please make the corrections when you get a chance. Mhhutchins 02:44, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes, of course, this makes perfect sense. I fixed and another sampler I did too.Don Erikson 18:13, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Dracula Made Easy

I changed the name of the author of this book from "Young" to Youngson. Mhhutchins 19:49, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

Now you know why they don't offer me a monitor position here. (Like how I had to use spell-check twice in the previous sentence). I'd make a terrible monitor.Don Erikson 23:16, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
I don't think you'd be terrible. We have moderators with far fewer contributions than you, and IMO you provide far more correct info than you provide duff info. I think your biggest lack is in communication - it seems to come in bursts. But one of our top contributors is also one of our quietest mods. BLongley 01:04, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

Spectra Special Editions

Hello, Don. I changed the publication type for this to CHAPTERBOOK. And wouldn't it be better to add an '(excerpt)' to each of the contents? Stonecreek 05:08, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

As it's currently defined by ISFDB standards, this would be an anthology. According to the current standards, a CHAPTERBOOK type contains only one piece of shortfiction. I believe that exceptions to this rule could possibly be made. Perhaps you should start a discussion on the Rules & Standards page. Mhhutchins 05:18, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
I fixed it as requested.Don Erikson 23:05, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

St. Martin's Press

The name of this publisher has an apostrophe so it shouldn't be entered as "St. Martins Press". Ordinarily I would just make the correction without any notification, but so far today you've entered three books without the apostrophe. Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:05, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Fixed the entries and and removed the incorrect autocorrect so it will no longer be a problem,Don Erikson 20:10, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

The Asimov Science Fiction Bibliography

According to the OCLC record that you sourced in your submission to add this title to the database, the author is credited as "M. B. Tepper", as do two of the three Abebooks dealers (the third gives it as "Matthew B. Tepper" but his very own image shows the cover credit as "M. B. Tepper".) Does the Whole SF Database often give full names regardless of the actual credit? Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:38, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

The WSFDB does give the full name. More than a few times in the past I have had to change the sometimes overly formal name it uses for a more excepted version, but I missed this one. I'll go fix it now.Don Erikson 20:08, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I've accepted the submission. Here's the new record. Please update it when you get a chance. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:09, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

The Wilds

Hi. I think your "The Wilds" submission duplicates this entry. I moved the note from your submission over to that. Would you double-check that it's the same one? I've been known to miss the glaringly obvious details.... Thanks. --MartyD 23:26, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

What happened was this; I searched for the authors name and came up empty because I forgot if you leave a space before or after a search when typing or cut & paste you will not get a correct response.
Being I'm a bad type writing guy it happens often and took me literally years to figure out.Don Erikson 21:22, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, that happens to me, too. Thanks, I will reject the submission, then. As I mentioned above, I copied your notes to the existing entry. --MartyD 11:07, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Realms

I should not have accepted the submission adding contents to this record. It would have been better to import contents from this record and then add the page numbers. You would not have had to type in all of the contents, and no one would have to merge all of them with the title records already in the database. Please keep that in mind the next time you're entering contents to a collection or anthology with multiple contents. Look first for a record that is similar. Then either clone the record to create a new one, or import contents if the pub record is without contents. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:47, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Yeah I know. I didn't think of it until I was nearly done. But I didn't have to do much typing as I clicked & dragged from the WorldCat entry (faster than cut & paste too). Lesson learned.Don Erikson 22:16, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

The Return from Avalon

I accepted the submission adding a pub record for this title, but then saw that it was already in the database, under the correct author's name (your submission credited Raymond K. Thompson). I've deleted the duplicate with the wrong name. Mhhutchins 03:29, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

The Big Losers

I'm holding a submission to add another edition of this title, but it's almost identical to this one (except for the date). Does your source give an earlier printing of the title, and should the one in your submission be a second printing? Mhhutchins 05:28, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Submission still on hold. Please cancel it if you believe it's an error, or let me know if you think it's a second printing. I'll hold the submission another day or so and then reject it. Mhhutchins 17:18, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguating content art records

Please use brackets instead of parentheses for the interior art records in this record. Mhhutchins 22:37, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Super Science, March 1950

Submission updating this record was accepted, but I changed the review dates to that of the publication. The date field, if left blank, will give the same as the pub record's date. (99% of all reviews are original to the issue and so will have the same publication date.) Also, I changed the titles of the letters to remove the numbering. Numbers should only be added (at the end of the title) if the same author has more than one letter in the issue. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:12, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

About the review dates, I wrongly thought it was for the date of the book. As to the letters, I used the same style I found that some other editor had used (unless I misinterpreted that too!). Live and ... uh... something. I forgot.Don Erikson 19:48, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
I've added the number to the second letter by the same author in this record. As I said above, add numbers if there's more than one letter in the issue by the same author. If you've seen records that give consecutive numbers to letters by different authors, please let me know so that I can correct them. Mhhutchins 21:04, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Magazine issues

If you'd do a primary verification of the records for the magazine records that you've been updating, it would really be appreciated. The least it does is let us know the data is from the primary source. And if any questions should arise later we'd have someone to go for help. If you don't want to do a primary verification, or just don't want to be bother with questions later (and I'd understand this, believe me), just record in the note field that the data has been verified against a copy of the issue. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:16, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

"The Golden Naginata", by Jessica Amanda Salmonson

I added a cover image to your verified publication, along with a note about the initial ix unnumbered pages. Chavey 18:09, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Startling Stories, April (?) 1952 (UK)

Are you certain this record is correctly dated? According to Visco the issue was published in August 1952, which would make more sense because it reprints stories from the April 1952 US edition. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 21:29, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

My mistake. This pulp doesn't even have a date on it. I meant to use just a year date, I must have used the date from where the cover came from. I'll change the date and add a note about Visco being the source.Don Erikson 05:48, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Fanzine reviews

Fantastic Adventures, January 1945

I accepted the submission updating this record, but you added a content entry for "The Ship to the Moon" when there already is a record for the same page by the same author as "Kite Ship to the Moon". According to most sources, the latter is the correct title. Mhhutchins 21:51, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't know what happened, most of the contents was already entered, without page numbers, so it was either I or the original poster. I will fix it now AND add some illustrators names to fill in the "uncrediteds".Don Erikson 23:32, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. I checked the original submission, and "The Ship to the Moon" was one of the titles you added. "Kite Ship to the Moon" was already in the record. I'll remove the bad title. Mhhutchins 02:19, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Fantastic Adventures, February 1943

Is the piece "The Amazing Wild Horses of Tartary" credited to Anonymous on page 97 of this issue? Thanks. Mhhutchins 19:36, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

There is no form of credit for this title. The original enterer used Anonymous here and on other essays in other issues. Now that I think about I should have changed all those to uncredited too. Should I go back and change all the Anonymous's to uncredited? Don Erikson 19:03, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Question about Blade #24: Dragons of Englor

I have a question about the ISBN for Dragons of Englor (Blade #24). The book I have, which shows "First printing May 1977" has an ISBN 0-523-40-042-4 on the title page, as well as 523-40042-4 on the spine, and 40-042*$1.25 at the top right corner on the front cover. The ISBN in the record here does not match that. OTOH, 0523400424 is an invalid ISBN. There is no mention of this on the record you verified here, so I'm wondering if the copy I have is NOT a first printing from May 1977, or if your copy also has the invalid ISBN? BTW, the ISBN is invalid I think because the check digit (last digit) should be X. Thanks :) AndonSage 01:49, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

I've noticed that in the early days of the ISBN mistakes sometimes happened. The ISBN on the 1st printing is for the second & third printings. So the fault is mine and I will change the ISBN to a catalog Number, 40-042.Don Erikson 19:14, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Why wouldn't you just change it to ISBN 052340042X, and note the misprinted last digit in the notes? If you do a google search on ISBN 052340042X the book comes up all over the place. Even Amazon uses that ISBN. At the very least there should be an explanation of the ISBN in the notes, shouldn't there? I'd be happy to make the changes, if it's ok. BTW, I uploaded a scanned cover image for the book :) AndonSage 07:43, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

SFBC (UK) edition of Up the Walls of the World

According to this list there was no SFBC (UK) edition of this title. If you look at the ISFB records for the 1978 selections you'll see all the catalog numbers are filled. SFBC printing of Abrams edition of The Hobbit

Don, what is the source for the submission adding a 1980 SFBC printing of the 1977 Abrams edition of The Hobbit? The other submissions for this title cited the Whole SF Catalog #8, but this submission wasn't sourced. I could find no data anywhere that the SFBC had reprinted this edition for members. The three-year gap between the original publication and the SFBC offering is also suspect. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 04:13, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

The source is the Whole SF Catalog #8. I must have forgot to add the source. This was the only source I could find on this edition. If it is accepted I will add the correct note.Don Erikson 16:38, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

I've accepted the submission. Please add the source when you get a chance. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:11, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Can you recheck the review on page 57 of this record? We have the book Spring Break as written by Nicholas Pine. Does this review credit Nina Kiriki Hoffman? Mhhutchins 02:21, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

SF Eye, Spring 1996

Why did you zero out the dates of the contents you added to this record? Unless you're sure that a content is reprinted, it's best to leave the field blank, and let the system date it the same as the pub record. Mhhutchins 18:59, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

??? I have NO idea what happened. I put in the date from what was already there. I wouldn't changed the dates already in place. I'll fix it but What the Hell? .... I just checked and the Publication Listing page shows 000-00-00 dates for all entries even though the edit page shows the original date for the entries already there. Something screwy fer shur!Don Erikson 20:31, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
If you put anything into the date field other than the standard format of YYYY-MM-DD, the system will zero them out. If you leave them blank, the system will automatically date them the same as the publication record. Did you enter a date or did you leave them blank? Mhhutchins 20:40, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
I've always filled in myself, I didn't know about leaving them blank which is very useful to know. But it doesn't explain why set dates changed to 000-00-00. It was probably my fault but I don't know what i did wrong.Don Erikson 20:47, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Horrorstruck, March/April 1988

Can you recheck the types and numbering for the essay "Under the Influence: A Visit With Ramsey Campbell" in this issue? There are two identical interiorart records on 22, and essay records by Potter on pages 23 and 27, the latter given a number like an interiorart record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:43, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

My mistakes, I fixed it.Don Erikson 20:50, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
What did you do? There was no change in the submission to edit this record. Mhhutchins 20:52, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
I deleted all info for one of the duplicates. Is that not adequate? All this computer stuff is beyond me. As Oddball says in Kelly's Heroes "I just just drive this 'em, I don't know what makes'em work."Don Erikson 20:58, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
You have to use the "Remove Titles from This Pub" function. Doing a pub edit and blanking the fields won't affect the record at all. Mhhutchins 21:13, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

Now I'm totally confused. When I go to the Publication Listing the extra title is there but when I go to the Removal Editor page there isn't a duplicate title listed to remove. So I'm sorry but I'm going to have to let you deal with it.Don Erikson 17:53, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

That's because the removal editor only lists one record if there are two identically titled records in a pub. I'd forgotten about that. Tell me which ones you want to remove. I can retitle them and then remove them. Mhhutchins 17:59, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Just the one duplicate page 22 interior art from the above said Horrorstruck. Thanx!Don Erikson 19:35, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Duplicate removed. That leaves an "essay" by Potter on page 27. Is that correct? Mhhutchins 22:49, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Entering titles for a bi-monthly dated magazine issue

The months in the title of this record should be "May-June". It is ISFDB standard to use dashes instead of slashes. You'll also have to change the other titles in this record, and any past or future records that you either create or update. These may have been entered incorrectly by the original editor who created the record, and the moderator who handled them didn't catch the error. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:47, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

It is how it was originally entered. If you OK my edit anyway I'll fix it and a the fact I credited Alfred Klosterman as Allen Klosterman.Don Erikson 22:51, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
I accepted that submission but removed the spaces around the dash (in all of the titles): May - June -> May-June. I also accepted September/October 1988 and changed all of the slashes to dashes in that one. Sorry, that's all I had time for this morning. --MartyD 11:23, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Ringworld

Hi, I have a favor to ask. I just accepted a submission of the 19th printing of the Del Rey / Ballantine edition of Ringworld, dated December 1981. In checking that submission, I notice we have an unspecified printing with the same ISBN and price, dated 1982 and citing the Whole Science Fiction Database 7 as the source. Is that your entry, perhaps? Anyway, I'm wondering if you have that source and could see if you think these two entries might be referring to the same edition or if the 1982 one might be the 20th printing. Or maybe we just can't tell. Thanks. --MartyD 11:48, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, but I can't find any info that differentiate the two. Ballantine often reprinted more once with the same ISBN and price so it could be or not.Don Erikson 21:27, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for checking on it. --MartyD 01:04, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Cover artist identified

Hello, Don. I added the cover artist for your verified pub. Stonecreek 13:48, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Magnum Books ed. of Erewhon by Butler

Does your copy of this record give an explicit publication date? I thin we have the same printing, but mine only gives a copyright year of 1968. There is a gutter code of "5—76" printed on page 348. So mine may be a later printing. It has the same cover art, page count, catalog number and price as the current record. I'm wondering if I should make a new record for it. Mhhutchins 18:28, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

My copy has the code "4-75". I believe that they are date codes, so yours, as is mine, are reprints of 1968 printing. I could be wrong. I will check around to see if this entry needs to be un-verified and the date changes to 0000-00-00. Don Erikson 20:35, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
No need to zero out the date field. We can use the printing codes found in the back of these as a publication date for the records. (Lancer did this date coding in the later printings of some of their books.) I'm going to clone your record for a new record of my copy. You can just update the date field of your record. Thanks. R Is for Rocket again

Hi Don, could you check the copyright page of this pub again? I think I have a copy of the 14th printing, but it could just as well be the 15th. Question is, does your copy also state the publication dates for the 1st through 14th printings? And if so, what dates are given for the 9th, 10th and 12th printings. Your answer here is inconsistent with my copyright page (9th printing June 1970, 10th August 1970, 12th September 1972). By the way, the cover is by Paul Lehr, confirmed by Jane Frank in "Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists of the Twentieth Century" Thanks for checking, --Willem H. 15:54, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

My copy of the 14th printing states the printing dates of the 5 Doulbleday printings, the first to regular Bantams, and the twelve Pathfinder ones, for a total of 14. Your reading of the dates are correct, somewhere I goofed up. But publisher data on copyright pages isn't always consistent, I tried using such data to enter the printings of the early Ballantine edition the Tolkien books and gave up after realizing that later the printing the more likely the dates were different than those in earlier books. And don't get me started on Ace!Don Erikson 18:28, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
I added the data and some notes to the pub. Hope you can agree. Thanks for checking! --Willem H. 18:43, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Phase Shift

Is the first piece in this anthology a foreword that is spelled "Forward"? If it is a foreword you'd also need to disambiguate the record by adding the title of the anthology to the title of the essay. Mhhutchins 21:21, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

I knew I should have left a note, yes is spelled that way. If it wasn't for the fact that I can never remember which has an "e" & checked, I would have missed it, probably. I think maybe it's not a typo but a pun concerning time travel. If so, should it be disambiguated?Don Erikson 21:56, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
No. But you should update both the title record and the pub record with a note of explanation so that no one comes along and "corrects" the spelling. Thanks. Mhhutchins 22:01, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
Done & done.Don Erikson 22:10, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Heinlein dates

An interesting source of information has given me the dates for the first Ace printings of the ten Heinlein juveniles. Apparently Ace published one a month from Sept.'70 until June '71.

  1. Tunnel in the Sky 9-70
  2. The Star Beast 10-70
  3. The Rolling Stones 11-70
  4. Rocket Ship Galileo 12-70
  5. Red Planet 1-71
  6. Between Planets 2-71
  7. Have Space Suit - Will Travel 3-71
  8. Time for the Stars 4-71
  9. Space Cadet 5-71
  10. Citizen of the Galaxy 6-71

So, I'm going to update the records, citing a Mr. Stuart Wells. Figured one message was better than ten! He had an ad on AbeBooks selling the fine lot and noted he bought and bagged them when new, so they've never been read. I asked if he knew the order, and he answered! --~ Bill, Bluesman 23:16, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Fantasy Voyages Great Science Fiction from the Saturday Evening Post

Instead of going through the trouble of typing in 20 new content records for this record and then having to make 20 submissions to merge the new records with the existing ones, you should have imported the contents from this record. Necrofile, Fall 1991

I've made the following changes to ths record:

  • Moved the binding description to the note field, because the binding is not one of the standard formats. I've also corrected the case where I used the same binding in a later issue of the same magazine. Sorry, that was a few years back when I was experimenting with formats.
  • Changed the author of Clive Barker's Shadows in Eden to Stephen Jones, and linked it to the title record.
  • Changed the title of the Campbell book from Walking Nightmares to Waking Nightmares, and linked it to the title record.
  • Changed the names of the letters on page 20 to the ISFDB standard of adding the title of the issue.

Also, I think you may have pasted the wrong data into the author field of the piece on page 24: "The Bookshelf: British Publishers, July - September 1991". Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 17:45, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing all my goof-ups, you right on all of them. I fixed "The Bookshelf" credit. And to think I proofread the whole thing and still missed them. Don Erikson 23:56, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Necrofile #3

Can you confirm the date of this issue? We have a verified record for Issue #6, dated 1992-10-31. Could "Winter 1992" mean around January 1992? That's the only way it would fall into sequence. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 19:04, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

I think I know what happened, I typoed a 12 instead of a 1 (fat fingers). Anyway, the date IS just an assumption that fits the quarterly schedule. I'll change it to "1". Or would a 000-00-00 date be more appropriate? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Don Erikson (talkcontribs) .
Fat fingers strike again! Your current submission changes the date of the pub to 1992-10-00, and leaves all the contents as 1992-12-00. Mhhutchins 22:51, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
More "Fat-headed" than "Fat-fingered". I fixesdf it.23:21, 24 May 2012 (UTC)
Well, you got the publication date right. Now you have to change the dates of all of the contents. Once a pub record has been created, no matter how often you change the date, the content records keep the same date. Each one will have to be corrected. They can all be corrected in one submission to update the pub record. Mhhutchins 23:24, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Back to the Stone Age

I made several changes to your verified copy of Burroughs' Back to the Stone Age. I've linked to a cover image and added the month of publication from a secondary source, with a note. I've also added an INTERIORART item for the title page illustration and added Krenkel's name to the cover artist. Both the the Heins source that I cited and Robert B. Zeuschner's Edgar Rice Burroughs claim that the cover is by both Krenkel and Frazetta. I think that most Ace books of this era don't actually credit the cover artist. Let me know if this is credited to Frazetta only and we can set up an appropriate variant. Thanks. --Ron ~ RtraceTalk 14:14, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

DAW Collectors publication series

In filling out the DAW Collectors Books publication series, I have a question about a book that you verified. Andre Norton's Perilous Dreams, 3rd printing, has a note with the "DAW Collector's Number". Since many reprint editions didn't actually list this number, I was hoping you could tell me whether this note was "inherited" from other editions of the book, or whether it actually appears on this edition of the book, and if so, where -- e.g. on the cover, the spine, or the copyright page. Thanks much, Chavey 20:31, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

The front cover of the 3rd printing as is identical to the 1st's, so the number is there next to the price. The only difference, besides the number line on the copyright page, the back cover type is spaced a little different & the book "Spell of the Witch World" added to the list of Norton books.Don Erikson 16:16, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the help, I added it to the publication series. Chavey 19:25, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

The Explorers

Hi, could you modify the cover artist for The Explorers (Ballantine 1963). Jack Faragasso's signature IS visible in the lower left corner, see here and the cover is also shown on Faragasso's site. So Jane Frank is wrong again, it's not Richard Powers. Horzel 21:30, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

I'll ask this question to the second PV, now that I see the cover credit was his. Horzel 08:04, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
User Horzel is right. I changed the credit and added notes. Thanks, --Willem H. 14:31, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Colonel Sun

You created a record for this title under this record, which gives the author as Kingsley Amis. From the note I'm assuming the book is actually credited to Robert Markham, so it should have been entered under this record. I will accept the submission, but will have to unmerge it from the title record you entered it under, correct the credited author to "Robert Markham", and then merge it with the correct title record. Please keep this in mind whenever you're adding a pub record for a pseudonymous work. Only use the "Add Publication to This Title" function if the title and author credits match exactly. The James Bond Dossier

Your description of this work as a fictional biographical report (entered as a NOVEL) is in opposition to the wikipedia article which describes it as a critical analysis. Mhhutchins 21:31, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

You're right. The back cover is misleading and the parts I randomly scanned fooled me. I'll redo it as nonfiction.Don Erikson 21:36, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Anderson's The Trouble Twisters

I can't see any difference between your submission to add a new record for the 4th printing and one that's already in the database. Am I missing something? Mhhutchins 02:20, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

That's right, I'm wrong. I cancelled it.Don Erikson 18:04, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Cover artist for Dragonflight

Can you see whether your copy of the third printing of this title explicitly credits Gino D'Achille as the cover artist? Some sources say his art wasn't used until the fourth printing. And that Bob Foster's art was used in the first three Ballantine printings. Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 15:42, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

The copyright page says Gino D'Achille.Don Erikson 17:05, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
But is it the D'Achille cover? That's the more important question. Mhhutchins 17:34, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes it is.Don Erikson 22:16, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

V. C. Andrews titles

After her death most of the books were written by Andrew Neiderman, so "V. C. Andrews" is partially a pseudonym (although it's not set up that way because of it being shared by the two authors). All of the works by Neiderman haven't been varianted yet,so you should do an advanced search for both the author and title of the book before adding a publication under this credit. Don't just go to the author's page, because many of them only show up on Neiderman's page. There's a record of your submissions is already in the database, so I've rejected that one. Another one I'll accept, but then merge the title with the one already in the database. A third one was mistakenly entered under the wrong title record: a novel that's in the database as Fallen Stars. You entered it under the title record for Falling Stars, another novel entirely. So I'm going to reject that submission as well. Mhhutchins 17:33, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

I rejected three more submissions that duplicate records already in the database. Go to your list of rejected submissions to see which ones. Mhhutchins 17:39, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Cover art credit for Norman's Ghost Dance

Can you re-check the credits given in the The Whole Science Fiction Database 7 for the cover artist of the first two Ballantine editions of John Norman's Ghost Dance? I'm holding a submission that wants to change it to Frank McCarthy based on another source. Thanks for checking. I'm assuming you have this source, because I remember you giving it as a source for several records. If you do have the book (and the others in the series), could you please do a primary verification of the records. That way other moderators will know who to go for questions about records that use them as a source. Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:09, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

I only have a DAW printing of this title so I did a little research. First the WSFDB7 credits Thomas Beechum for the first printing but gives no credit for the second. There is a Spanish language Flickr page the credits that credits Frank McCarthy. But after seeing both artists work I believe, because of style and composition that it is Beechum. Go here to see another white buffalo painting done be Beechum here:

http://www.askart.com/askart/b/tom_beecham/tom_beecham.aspx

McCarthy's work leans more to panoramic, multi-figural works. I know none of this conclusive but without the book it's just a guess. You should use the Wiki Verification Request page.Don Erikson 22:48, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

I'll post a request on the verification page. BTW, in the original request, I meant that you should do a primary verification of the records for WSFDB, not Ghost Dance. Also, is it credited as "Beechum" or "Beecham" in WSFDB7? Mhhutchins 23:15, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

The WSFDB says Beechum and Google autocowrecked it. So I think The WSFDB7 is a typo! Jeez what a mess. Also there is an artist named Tom Beechum but he does only birds. Good idea, I'll go thru all the WSFDBs I've entered (there's till more) and verifiy them.Don Erikson 23:34, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Harpy Thyme

I have a submission on hold that wants to remove the note "'The New Xanth Novel' in orange seal on lower left front cover" from this pub. The Amazon scan may not show it as such, but the seal is present on my copy of the book. Any reason why it should be removed? --Willem H. 20:21, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

I removed it because I replaced the scan that showed the correct cover with the orange seal and I thought it was then redundant. If you think the change unnecessary I have no problem keep it unchanged.Don Erikson 20:27, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
I see now. The only thing is, you didn't link the uploaded image to the pub. I approved your edit, but you still need to add the image url. Thanks. --Willem H. 21:01, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
I seems few if any of last 95 covers I'd uploaded over the last few weeks hasn't appeared. They appear on the wiki's "Recent Changes" page. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong (I do tend do larger JPGs) or it's something else.Don Erikson 19:10, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
I think you missed step 6 of the upload instructions. There's nothing wrong with your uploads, but the semi-automated process only connects the image to the pub record, not the other way around. I'll do a number of them, starting with the earliest. --Willem H. 20:13, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
Ready up to 10 september. I'll see how you are doing tomorrow. --Willem H. 20:51, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
I think I've got it now. I did a few and they're pending so when they're OKed I'll finish the rest.Don Erikson 23:57, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
Ok, I've got it working now and will do the rest.Don Erikson 15:15, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Image uploads

The files you're uploading of cover images are larger than the requested limits. Please decrease the resolution of the scans so that the image can remain the same size but the file will be smaller. These high resolution scans can be used to reproduce art which is copyrighted and our "fair use" claim wouldn't stand up if any litigious artist or publisher wants to play hardball. You should be receiving a warning when you exceed the requested limits: files no larger than 150K, and images no larger than 600px. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:56, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Ok, I'll make them smaller for now on but the graphic artist in me quails at the low-rez pix.I just wanted the price & numbers to be legible.Don Erikson 15:13, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
I don't think the lower resolution does much of any harm, but I guess it depends on your software. I downloaded the image you uploaded for this record, saved it at a lower resolution and replaced it with this result. Compare it to the version you uploaded that is twice the file size. Not much difference in the quality. You can still see the catalog number and price. Mhhutchins 00:02, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
I've switched to 96 dpi and max dimension of 555 pixels. Seems to work well enough.Don Erikson 00:24, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Cover Additions

For two of your cover additions (Golem and Mork & Mindy: A Video Novel), you put the image URL in the artist field and not the image URL field. I accepted the edits, but then edited them to move the URL to the correct field. If you accidentally overwrote the artist, you will need to re-add them.

By the way, on the Mork & Mindy one, you will notice that the notes show up on a single line even though you entered separate lines. This is because you need to use HTML. See Help:Using HTML in Note Fields for additional information. -- JLaTondre (talk) 20:27, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

I was afraid I might use the wrong field on some, I think only 2 is pretty good as I didn't think of until I was done.

In re Mork book, I did that when I was a beginner here and will fix other that did as I go thru this current run.Don Erikson 22:29, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Dates on Fawcett Crest printings of The Stars, Like Dust

Hi Don. I see you propose blanking the date on #M1946 of The Stars, Like Dust, yet you didn't also try to make the same change to #P2373, which I happen to have. I imagine #M1946 has the same June 1972 printing statement I see in #P2373. I'm quite willing to believe neither was printed in June 1972, but I was just wondering what led you to propose the change on that one, and whether I should to the same with #P2373. Thanks. --MartyD 10:55, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

I changed it date unknown and noted that this a later reprint.Don Erikson 17:54, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Great, thanks. I accepted them both. --MartyD 23:44, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

A comma-less The Stars, Like Dust?

Don, I approved your adding a cover scan to this record, however, a query: does the title page also contain the comma that appears on the cover? This edition's title seems to be one of the many that appears not to have it. Cheers. PeteYoung 20:08, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes it does, so,I,fix,ed,it,Tata.Don Erikson 21:12, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Image uploads again

What happened? Today you uploaded more than 20 files that are outside the ISFDB posted standards. (Aren't you getting a warning???) Last week, I went through and replaced about a dozen of those you'd uploaded before I was able to bring those standards to your attention. Now it appears you've uploaded more images in total disregard for those standards. Sorry, but I'm not going to clean up behind you again. My only recourse is to delete the images, unless you have a reasonable rationale for your actions. Mhhutchins 03:17, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

I just did a test and saw that there is no warning given when a file exceeds 600px in length, but there is a warning for files exceeding 150k in size. I will post a message on the Community Portal to ask why the warning isn't working for both standards. In the meantime, please make sure that your files are smaller than 150k. In searching the documentation, I was unable to find the posted standards, so I apologize if my previous posting came across as too harsh (reading it back now, I believe it is). I'll get back with you about why the standards aren't documented. Mhhutchins 03:36, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't realize the over-sized images were such a problem. I've seen many on the "Recent Changes" page (may those just pixel sizes and not file sizes).I've had a real problem with sizing in photoshop, there seems to be consistency with file size in relation to DPI and dimensions.

But now I've found a web site that automatically resizes JPEGs for web use for free (http://www.jpegmini.com/), singly (which I've tested) or in batches (which I haven't). In the future no file over 150k. Evar!Don Erikson 04:53, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

We've left them as guidelines rather than documented rules, I think. The Wiki software does warn about excessive file size, and after uploading warns about not being able to create thumbnails from excessive pixels. There are two things to consider: 1) will we get sued? and 2) can we afford to pay for the disk space? If we stick within the guidelines we should be able to cope with 1, 2 is a rather nebulous query that only Ahasuerus can answer. BLongley 05:36, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
If just tested jpegmini.com and very happy with the results. I joined for free and they resized my latest batch of covers with great results. So no more over-sized files.Don Erikson 05:42, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

The Joan-of-Arc Replay

Don, I just had to reject your edit to replace an image for The Joan-of-Arc Replay. The image URL was for a Pyramid Edition of The Ice People. PeteYoung 22:24, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

I don't know that happened but I fixed it.Don Erikson 01:11, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

The Wizard of Oz

I have a submission to make The Wizard of Oz into the parent record of a new record titled The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (unabridged). We have to assume all works are unabridged unless noted, so we can safely assume that this record is for the unabridged version of the work. Do you have any other reason for wanting to create this new variant record? BTW, The Wizard of Oz is already a variant, so you can't make it into a parent record of a new title. The new title would have to be a variant of that one's parent record. Mhhutchins 02:08, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Oops! My bad. To explain further would only make me look stupider than I already seem, so...I cancelled the submission & redo it.Don Erikson 16:17, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
There's a record in the database that's identical to the one of yours that I have on hold. If you think they're the same, please cancel the current submission. Mhhutchins 19:31, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Hitler's Daughter

Hi Don, further to your adding a cover image to Hitler's Daughter, I know it's unverified but do you have a copy to hand? There's also a 2000 iUniverse POD edition that appears to use the old Pinnacle galleys, and it has the full title as "Hitler's Daughter . . . Wants to Occupy the White House" on the cover and title page. If possible, can you look? Thanks. PeteYoung 22:53, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Pete, I do own this one. It says on the cover "Hitler's Daughter" And in much smaller type ". . . wants to occupy the White House", but "Hitler's Daughter" only on the spine, title page, copyright page & on another page before the text (I can't remember what it's called). The reason I didn't verify the book is that I just entered it as a new novel earlier today. I'm a little leery of verifying a new entry.Don Erikson 23:28, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for checking! PeteYoung 00:00, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
I'm a little leery of verifying a new entry. Why? Mhhutchins 02:26, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
By new entry I mean something I just entered. And in the past it seemed wise that other eyes oversee these, as a verified entry may be subject to less scrutiny. But there will be fewer NEW for financial reasons so it's not that big of a deal.Don Erikson 20:56, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
The "other eyes" are those of the moderator who accepted the submission. Once a submission been's accepted, just take a minute to look over the record, which is something everyone should do anyway. If you find any errors or omissions, make another submission to update it. After that, there's nothing keeping you from verifying the record. The eyes of the man with the book in his hand are a million times more important than the man who clicked the "Accept" button. That's the easy part. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:20, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

The Blob

Can you confirm the author's middle initial is credited on the title page of this publication? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 20:40, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

My mistake, there is no middle initial. I'll fix it.Don Erikson 20:57, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
I'll move the pub record under the correct title record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 05:02, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Science Fiction Stories edited by Blishen

You note that the titles of excerpted stories are as they appear in the table of contents. But, it is ISFDB policy to always give the titles as they appear on the title page. Will the titles of stories in this record have to be corrected? Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:04, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

It is now fixed.Don Erikson 18:54, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Submission accepted, and I've updated the title records of the excerpts to indicate their source. Also, I've gone through and merged the remaining title records with those already in the database. There's a few discrepancies in the titles. Can you confirm the titles as given for Specimen (there's one for "The Specimen"), Fear Shouter (there's one for "The Fear Shouter"), and Wind from the Sun (there's a record for "The Wind from the Sun")? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 19:49, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Never mind. The Amazon "Look Inside" shows all three titles with a "The", so I've merged them with the current records. I've also regularized the publisher to "Kingfisher US" to match other pub records from this publisher. Mhhutchins 19:53, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
OOps!(I seem to say that a lot). I clicked & dragged from WorldCat and forgot to go back and catch it. Your heroic action yet again saved the day! (no sarcasm intended)Don Erikson 23:16, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Fadiman's intro to The Martian Chronicles

I merged Fadiman's essay in this record with the existing record which gives a date of 1958, not 1950 (and added the disambiguating title of the collection.) Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:16, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Merged two more into the same record. (BTW, it's not really spelled "Prefactory", is it?) Mhhutchins 17:18, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

It is Prefatory, I'll change it.Don Erikson 17:21, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
I've already merged them, so they're together as one record. I just wanted to confirm that the spelling wasn't different from the piece's appearance in other publications. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:51, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Dean Ellis cover art for The Illustrated Man

What is the source for this credit? I have the Doubleday edition that first used this cover, and there is no artist credit. Mhhutchins 23:43, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

I did a net search and found multiple references crediting Ellis. Though there is no authorized Ellis site, there's much collaborating info out there.Don Erikson 23:49, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
We ask that primary verifiers give the source for their data if it's not stated in the book. By giving this cover art credit and doing a primary verification of the record, a db user will believe the credit is given in the book. Yes, there may be a lot of "info out there", but how much of it is virally-communicated BS? I'd really like a more reliable source than "multiple references". Once this is in our db, someone who considers us reliable will give the ISFDB as the source and the misinformation never ends. I hope you agree that the integrity and the reputation of the ISFDB is only as good as the data we're entering. If you are able to find a reliable source, please take the time to add it to the records you've verified. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:59, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
All right, I'll do a search and either make my case here or remove the info.Don Erikson 00:03, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

12th printing of Bradley's The Spell Sword

I'm holding a submission to change the price of this record to Canadian dollars and add an image. Yet, the image shows both US and Canadian dollar prices. Are you certain that this 12th printing was exclusive to Canada, and should only be entered in Canadian dollars? Is it possible there were two 12th printings, one for each country, but they had the same cover which was used for both printings? If so, we need to clone a record for the US printing, appropriately priced. Mhhutchins 04:06, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

I've never seen a DAW book whose US & Canadian printing shared the same printing number. This printing and the 11th printing have the exact same price & ISBN and appear to be the same. And it usually seems that when a US publisher does a Canadian printing they use the same cover printed in the US and exported, I'm guessing tariff or tax reasons or simply the economy of scale.
So am I certain? How can anybody be certain concerning a publisher that only casually follows their own rules let alone any industry-wide standard. I certain enough to go with this entry.Don Erikson 05:23, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
I know that in the early days of DAW they kept separate printings for each country, but these were never double-priced. Each book was priced for the country in which it was printed. I'm going to accept the submission but ask that you record the US price in note field so that users won't be bugging you about the disparity between the linked cover image and the record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:22, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
I've fixed it.17:11, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Pebble in the Sky by Isaac Asimov

One of Our H-Bombs Is Missing

I added cover credit to this record based on the OCLC record which I linked in the notes. A question: is the publisher actually stated as "Fawcett Gold Medal"? In the 50s most of the books from this publisher are given as Gold Medal Books (as seen on this cover). They didn't take on the full name "Fawcett Gold Medal" until circa 1965 (as seen in this cover scan). Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 20:35, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

I worried about that. The title page says "Gold Medal Books" and underneath it says "Fawcett Publications, Inc". If think I should change it I will.Don Erikson 20:40, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I suggest changing it to the most common form of the publisher's name for that time period. Eventually, I hope that we'll have separate fields for imprint and publisher, and we can move "Gold Medal Books" to the imprint field and "Fawcett Publications" to the publisher field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 20:45, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Fifty Short Science Fiction Tales

I have a submission to clone a record which is identical to the one already in the database. If you believe yours is a different edition (although your submission doesn't change anything other than a promise of a different cover), you should first discuss it with the primary verifier of the current record. There may a difference that neither one of you may be aware of until you've talked it out. I'll hold the submission until the outcome of the discussion. Mhhutchins 19:29, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

The clone I did is definitely a different printing. Mine has blue as the main color while the cloned one has red. I removed a part of of the notes the stated the book number appears on the back cover as mine has no number. Also from the image of the cloned printing shows that the price applied with a sticker and is also missing the Colliers logo.
So I believe mine is a different printing also stating it's a first.Don Erikson 19:51, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
I'll accept the submission, but still think you need to talk with the verifier of the "other first printing" so that the differences are clearly explained in each of the records. Mhhutchins 19:50, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
I uploaded a scan of the copyright page of my copy. It looks like the only differences between the two are the color of the cover and #01639 on the backcover of my copy. This probably means mine is a later (2nd?) printing. --Willem H. 20:38, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
The copyright pages are identical so I think you're right. Colliers' use of catalog numbers that start with "0" is something the did later. If you want I'll make note for both books about the differences.Don Erikson 20:48, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Good idea. Thanks, --Willem H. 21:32, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Edwina Noone's Gothic Sampler

According to Ashley & Contento's The Supernatural Index, the name of the preface in this publication is "A Dark and Brooding Preface". Can you re-check your copy? Also, I've noted that three of the stories are original to this anthology and have dated them as such. Thanks. Mhhutchins 23:16, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

You're correct about the preface so I changed it. But The Supernatural Index also says Noone & Priscilla Dalton Are both pen names for Michael Avallone. I knew about Noone but now I'll do the pseudonyms for both.23:38, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Soviet Science Fiction

With two different covers for [this], there should be two different records. Collier did this more than once, just changing the color[s] of a cover. I have a couple and though the copyright pages and text may be the same the ads in the back list different/more titles from one printing to the next. --~ Bill, Bluesman 19:57, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Total Eclipse

I'm holding the submission to add "Printed in Canada" to this record for the 3rd printing of this title. Any major changes to a record should be discussed with the other primary verifiers, in this case Bluesman. His copy may not have been printed in Canada. Mhhutchins 04:01, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

My copy is printed in Canada, cover in the US. Slim chance that there is a US copy with the same number line. If the 'Printed in ...' statement is added, the price should add the 'C'. --~ Bill, Bluesman 17:46, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
Submission accepted. "C" added. Mhhutchins 18:20, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Please read the notice that I've posted on the top of my talk page concerning notification of updates to records which I've primary verified. (There's also a notice at the top of my notification page asking you to read the other notice before posting messages on it.) You'll see that it's not necessary to inform me about adding Canadian prices to any of my primary verified records. This should save us both some time. Thanks. The Fury Out of Time

Re: The Fury Out of Time
I want to put forth the opinion that the ISBN for this pub is not a true ISBN by today's standards. Reason: It is used by two other pubs. I'd like to replace it with LB's catalog # of 318ZK, but I won't do it without your ok. I'm also informing Willem H. (Primary) of this opinion.--Astromath 14:24, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Cover artist credit discovered

According to the obituary of David Grove in this month's issue of Locus, he was the artist responsible for the poster and the covers of the tie-in movie editions for Disney's film of Something Wicked This Way Comes, including your verified record of the title. You can update the record to credit Grove and give the Locus obituary as your source. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:13, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

At the Earth's Core

Re: At the Earth's Core
You and Rhschu have verified this pub. It is noted in the notes that the artist's signature is not found on the cover. However it is on the cover. Look at the "man" in the lower right corner with his right hand stretched out. The signature is below the man's sleeve on the rock. The problem is I cannot read it. I'm also informing Rhschu of this find. I've tried to help by uploading a higher resolution image scanned from my collection.--Astromath 20:04, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia says the artist is Tom Chantrell. I left a note for Rhschu as he's the 1st primary verifier.Don Erikson 20:48, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

"Assumed"

Re this publication: We try to avoid the term "assumed", and record what is actually stated. If there is no statement of edition or printing, you should state that in the notes, and then, if available, provide a reliable secondary source for the edition or printing. Thanks. Importing contents

You would have saved yourself (or another editor) quite a number of submissions if you had imported the contents into this record instead of going through the trouble of typing in and then having to merge each of the stories with their existing records. The contents could have been imported from this edition, and then the contents that don't appear could have been removed, 2 submissions instead of 13. Mhhutchins 21:16, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

I thought of that but I just clicked and dragged the info from the other book as I have a lot of practice with this method so it wasn't a big deal, probably took about the same amount of time as the stories are in alphabetical order and not numerical on the edit pages.Don Erikson 21:23, 27 December 2012 (UTC)
It may have been easier for you. But considering that it's going to take 12 more submissions and 12 more moderations to merge those newly-created title records, and you'll realize clicking and dragging wasn't the easiest way to do it. Please keep that in mind in the future. Mhhutchins 01:08, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
Sorry! I had no idea. I will in the future take care.Don Erikson 18:55, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Replied to "To Reign In Hell" Question

Don, I replied to your "To Reign In Hell" question on my discussion page. Since it's been a month since you asked, I though I should let you know. Sorry for the delay. Feel free to delete this paragraph after you read it, and if you have more questions about my copy, just post on my page. I'll check my page more frequently. AndonSage 00:43, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

SF Hall of Fame IIB

You wrote a Note to Moderator in the submission updating this record that one of the stories is titled differently. That's not how to correct it. Go to the record, choose "Remove Titles From This Pub", check the box of the content you want to remove, and submit. Then update the record to add the correct title, and submit. If the newly created title record has a matching record already in the database, merge the two records. Thanks. Mhhutchins 21:09, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Almost Midnight

Can you confirm the country of publication of this title? According to the OCLC record, the book with this ISBN was published in Canada and the UK. The ISBN is not in the range used by Bantam US. In fact, in 1974 Bantam US had not started using ISBNs at all. Is the full ISBN stated in your copy, or just the catalog number T7227? Thanks for checking. Mhhutchins 21:18, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

There is no ISBN or SBN but on the spine it says 553 07227 150 & the cover a catalog # T7227. The copyright page says "Published simultaneously in the United States and Canada" and "Printed in the United States of America". As to the ISBN, many editors retro-concoct them using catalog numbers as someone did here. All indications this is a US book including the ad in the back.Don Erikson 23:16, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
I don't agree with editors who want to "retro-concoct" ISBNs based on catalog numbers. It adds no value to the record and contradicts the ISFDB policy of "record data as stated". I'll accept the submission, but remove the ISBN and enter the catalog number. Thanks. Mhhutchins 00:14, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

The Hot Car by Cameron

I'm finding it hard to get much information about this title. The little that I have found suggests that it's a crime novel. Are you certain that there's a spec-fic element to the story? Thanks. Mhhutchins 01:57, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

I was on the fence about this one. A quick synopsis, terrorist steal colbalt-60 and hide it in a car's radiator. As the thieves run, the radiation kills everyone who comes near. Could be considered more a thrill than SFnal but you wouldn't know by the cover with it's glowing flying car.
I didn't give it a nongenre label because the authors biblio is pretty thin. So I'll leave up to you.Don Erikson 19:17, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Romance of Atlantis

Happy New Year, Don... Your edit to add the cover for Romance of Atlantis shows the cover prefixes the title with "The". Could you check if that's on the title page too, and if not, it's worth recording the difference in the Note. Cheers. PeteYoung 22:21, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Don, I've rejected an edit to add the cover image of the The Influence to a Campbell pub titled Incarnate. Clearly an error, but as I don't know which specific pub you intended you'll have to submit it again. Cheers. PeteYoung 22:41, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
