Welcome!

Hello, Cleidoic, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Annie 20:52, 23 January 2021 (EST)

The Book of Secrets

Thanks for adding this one. A few things:

  • We use "pb" for standard sized American mass market paperbacks or smaller books. Any other paperback in "tp". More information here and at 6x9 inches, this one is definitely a "tp".
  • When you do not verify a book, we need the source for the record. I added the author site and Amazon as sources but if you have others, feel free to add them.
  • On the title record, I added the exact link to the book record in Web pages and revised the source to point to it.

The book is here, the title record is here. Let me know if you have any questions and welcome again :)

PS: Do you plan on adding the ebook or any of the other versions and books? Annie 20:59, 23 January 2021 (EST)

PS2: There is nothing I can see that would make the author different from the one who did the story but I will see if I can confirm it - the genre and the timing matches so unless we find a reason to suspect it, we keep it as is. Annie 21:02, 23 January 2021 (EST)

Sent a question to the author and got an answer - both the story and the novel belong to the same person so we are all set with these two. Now onto adding more of her books? :) Annie 23:04, 23 January 2021 (EST)

I have asked the author if she is the author of the short story and I'm waiting for her answer. I am planning on adding the other books in the series, and as many of the versions for the later books as I can. But there was a problem with her publisher on the first book, so I'm not sure of the ebook information in that case. Cleidoic 00:50, 24 January 2021 (EST)

Looks like you got the answer before I did. Yes, I will add more of the series tonight. Cleidoic 00:51, 24 January 2021 (EST)

:) I got curious so I sent a mail. :) Goodreads is often a good source for books that were withdrawn from Amazon/other stores - so you may want to check there for the missing edition. You need to do some common sense weeding - it also has books that never made it out and were removed from Amazon because they were cancelled but for this kinds of situations when you know the book exists, it may have a record. The Book of Peril

Approved but some issues (and some of them are exactly like the ones in the first book so can you please read my notes and ask if you do no understand them):

  • We use "pb" for standard sized American mass market paperbacks or smaller books. Any other paperback in "tp". More information here and at 6x9 inches, this one is definitely a "tp".
  • On the title record, I added the exact link to the book record in Web pages and revised the source to point to it. Please try to do that in the next book on your own so someone does not need to clean that up again...
  • As this is a public record saying "I use" for sources is a bit counterproductive. "Data from X and Y as of date" is the easiest way to do that
  • The Weblinks are for book data - Amazon already is linked via the ISBN so no need to add Amazon there.

The result is here. Please look at it and the changes I am making to it (described above) and let me know if you have any questions. Annie 01:37, 24 January 2021 (EST)

And here is the ebook :) The ASIN goes into the External Identifiers - just copy it there and pick ASIN from the drop down. I put it there and removed the links - the ASIN went where it belongs, the author one is for all editions and not for the specific edition so it goes into the title record. :)
When you are adding multiple versions of the same book, wait for the first one to be approved. Then you can use ClonePub instead of NewPub and just change the values that are different. When you do NewPub as with this one, you end up with two title records that need merging. I merged them here so we are all good :)
Let me know if you have any questions and/or concerns. :) Annie 01:42, 24 January 2021 (EST)

The Book of Mayhem

The ebook is here - I had to clear the link (ASIN or ISBN create the Amazon links so we never add Amazon in Web Links on books) but other from that it is perfect. However - I do not see the paperback for this one in the queue (your note implies it is there?) so you may need to redo it (Use ClonePub?) :) Annie 01:45, 24 January 2021 (EST)

And here is it :) Perfect. One small advice/idea - as we are an international site and there are 16 Amazons, it is better to say "Amazon.com" or "Amazon US" instead of just Amazon (although with a US price, it is obvious). Either way, thanks for reading my notes. Annie 02:11, 24 January 2021 (EST)
The date in the note should be the current date (when you are adding the book) and not when the book is published. The publication date has its own field - the date in the notes is to tell people when the data was checked against the sources. :) So it should be 2021 this year, for any book - regardless if it is from 2019 or 1950. :) Annie 02:44, 24 January 2021 (EST)

Star Wars Memories: My Time in the (Death Star) Trenches

Please note that we can only use image links from sites that have agreed to let us do so. You can find that list here. In the future, please only link to images from the sites on that list. You can see how to upload images directly to ISFDB here. I've uploaded that cover image and updated the publication here. Hope that helps! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe 13:39, 26 January 2021 (EST)

- Thank you. I have a question I'm hoping you can help me with. After creating the title record, I noticed there is a Kindle version with an earlier publication date. When I tried clone pub to add it, I got a warning regarding publication date. My copy of the book says 11 November 2019 in the back of the book and only November 2019 in the front, so I initially added the date from the back of the book. I went to change it to November 2019 on the title record page, but now I have a new warning about primary verification. What is the best way for me to handle this? Cleidoic 17:57, 26 January 2021 (EST)

Just add a moderator note that you are changing the date because of an earlier edition. This is an acceptable change into verified books. However make sure you are changing the title date and not the publication date. The paperback should still have its date, it is the title that needs the changed date. Once the book was created, the dates can be different (during the new book creation, they were both created with the date you specified). So in this case, you can change the date in this record. Add a moderator note when doing it to tell us that it is because of an earlier edition. :) Annie 18:30, 26 January 2021 (EST)

The Book of Secrets

I approved your clone of The Book of Secrets, but had to make a couple of changes. First, the addition made the date of the story earlier than the existing publication in the database, so I had to change the date of the novel to the earlier date. Second, when you use cover art from Amazon, if the location is like that you used "...images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51iK1pupZbL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg", you have to eliminate the part of the location between the underlines to "...images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51iK1pupZbL.jpg". Not all cover art locations include that sort of information between the underlines, but many do and that "extra" material should be deleted. Bob 22:41, 30 January 2021 (EST)

-Thanks for the information on the Amazon art link. I'll do that in future. Cleidoic 23:46, 30 January 2021 (EST)
