Sturgeon's Never Underestimate
Hi hi! I see that you have submitted a Title Merge for Never Underestimate and Never Underestimate.... According to Contento, the latter form of the title was used on the original magazine publication and at least three pre-1984 reprints. Could you please doule-check that the Collected Works reprint published the story as just Never Underestimate? If so, we can make it into a Variant Title. Thanks! Ahasuerus 10:52, 10 Jan 2007 (CST)
Universe June 1953 & Sturgeon's "The World Well Lost"
Hi -- I just rejected the note change to mention the first version of the story. The reason is that magazines are entered into the ISFDB too, so when the Universe June 1953 issue is entered, that publication will show up under this title as the first publication. You can see an index of magazines entered so far on the Magazines page.
Universe hasn't been entered yet; Ahasuerus and I have been entering some old magazines, but I don't have that particular issue so I won't be able to enter it for you. It will get entered eventually. If you'd like to make a note of the information as an oustanding action item, one place to start tracking information like this would be Author:Theodore Sturgeon, which is the place to coordinate efforts to improve Sturgeon's bibliography.

Genre stories in non-genre publications
Good question -- there has been some discussion of this in the past. The current consensus is that we do want to index those stories, but we don't necessarily want to index everything else in that magazine. In this particular case, Universe is generally regarded as a genre magazine, though, so I think we'd index everything in it. In a later incarnation, under the title "Flying Saucers from Other Worlds", it became a purely UFO-oriented publication, but that was in 1957.

Merging identical Sturgeon publication records
Hello again! Re: your note on Sturgeon's Wiki page about merging the two Publication (edition) records that we have for Volume X of his Collected Stories. The answer is that we don't merge identical Publication records, we simply delete them.
The reason why we merge Title records is that they often have multiple edition (Publication, in our parlance) records tied to them. When two Title records are merged, their associated Publications all end up under the merged Title, which is very convenient. With Publication records, there are no such considerations, so duplicates simply get zapped. HTH! Ahasuerus 11:19, 14 Feb 2007 (CST)

Starship Troopers
Re: the proposed "Make Variant Title" submission for Starship Troopers/Starship Soldier, unfortunately, you can't link a NOVEL and a SERIAL that way. The way the ISFDB software currently works, you can't make a Serial appear under its parent novel if the titles don't match. This is a known limitation and will be (hopefully!) addressed soon. The Compleat Boucher
I have approved the submission and merged the newly entered stories with their pre-existing counterparts, but it looks like we only have half the stories entered so far, covering pages 1-269 out of 531. I assume you were planning to enter the rest of the stories at a later point? Also, OCLC suggests that the page count should be "viii+531" rather than just "531". Does that match your copy? Thanks! - Thanks, I have approved the submission and merged the new stories. I had to adjust "novella"/"novelette" classifications in a number of cases since NESFA's pages are significantly larger than usual. I made "QUR" into a variant of "Q.U.R.", but could you please double check that there are no periods in NESFA's version? Analog: The Best of Science Fiction
About your submission for this new title: if there is no editor credited in the book itself, do not use a secondary source to establish who it might be (and especially not Amazon.com, who mistakenly sometimes attributes artists, designers, contributors, etc. as the author of the work.) - I made a few more changes based on info from Locus1. When you get a chance check the author's name for these stories: "Blind Man's Lantern" (is it Allen Lang or Allen Kim Lang?), "Thin Edge" (is it Johnathan or Jonathan Blake MacKenzie?). Slow Sculpture
Welcome back! Some FYIs and a couple of questions on your edit to the above. Since you added the essay by Willis to the contents, I am hoping you have the book. If so then some of the data in the record can be updated/changed. Dissembler, a robot that digs away finding new publications, mostly does so through AMAZON. Thus the data can be incorrect in the main fields (since the data is PRE-release, anything is possibly incorrect). This is why the note reads as it does so that an editor isn't as hesitant to change incorrect data. For instance even the title may be wrong. What is actually on the title page? The date is almost always wrong, but generally only the inclusion of the day. Extremely few publications have the day anywhere and lots of hardcovers don't even have the month. If either the month or day is not there, or is different, please change them to what is in the book. Page count is rarely correct from Amazon. For some reason they always round to a multiple of 8. In this case I checked OCLC [here] and they have the page count as xi+299 and are usually correct. OCLC also notes an afterword by Spider Robinson. I'll approve the edit as it stands, but if you can add/correct more data, please do so. Once doing so, the Dissembler note can be deleted as the publication will now have been checked. I have added all the stories an notes in the ToC (and checked them against the pages in the volume). At present I have left out the note "About Theodore Sturgeon" on p.299. It has no author shown, and when I tried to submit my additions with the author field blank, the whole thing bounced.
- That is the way the software works! What you do in such a case is enter 'uncredited' (without the quote marks) in the author field, then it will be accepted. ~Bill, --Bluesman 00:19, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
- The page count ix+299 is correct.
- On the title page is a subtitle as follows: "Volume XII: The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon".
- I left publication dates unchanged; I think "2009-10-20" is factually accurate, as my pre-ordered copy did arrive about that time.
- We do try to keep just the date in the book unless there is a secondary source (and mostly Amazon.com is twitchy, at best... though Amazon.Uk is much better [my opinion]) Thanks for following up!
