Welcome!

Hello, BryanThomasS, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 03:43, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Shattered Shields

Hi. I accepted your submission of Shattered Shields and made two tweaks: I changed "Baen Books" to just "Baen", as we seem to have settled on omitting the trailing Books for it, and I added a "$" to the price -- prices should be entered with currency information. It would be great if you would record the contents for it. If you need any help doing that, don't hesitate to ask. Thanks. --MartyD 12:54, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, Marty. I will add contents. The only reason I didn't is that I don't have page numbers yet as the book is in formatting. Would you prefer I add books after all that is ready or update them as it's available? I can, for example, list all the stories and authors now but add page numbers later or I can wait. Also, how do I add short stories? I did not see an add link specifically for that. Thanks for your help. BryanThomasS 14:57, 29 March 2014 (UTC)
Unless a publication is within 90 days of actual publication, it is ISFDB policy to hold off creating a record for it. So many changes can occur before the book actually appears that keeping up with them would create an unnecessary burden. Since it's apparent that you are the co-editor of the anthology, we can leave that task to you. When a publication date is announced, you'll have to update the date field in the publication record, the title record, and all of the content records (including the coverart record). Thanks and welcome to the ISFDB. Mhhutchins 16:14, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

I just entered the authors and titles of all stories in the Table of Contents. I don't have page numbers final yet but will update those when I do. BTS

Norton Book of Science Fiction

I'm holding your submission to add a publication date of 1993 to this record for the third printing. Is there either internal evidence or a secondary source that can confirm the date this printing was published. [The first printing was published in October 1993.] Unless we have more substantial data about this printing's publication date, it must remain with an unknown publication date. I'll hold the submission until you've had a chance to respond. Mhhutchins 17:01, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

You know, I didn't understand what you were doing. Apologies. I just saw a publication date out there and thought somehow it got overlooked. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by BryanThomasS (talkcontribs) .
No worries. The ISFDB allows the creation of records for multiple printings of an edition. Because many publishers don't provide the date of subsequent printings, and because of the ISFDB policy of entering data as accurately as possible, there will be records that have incomplete data. Please don't hesitate to create new records or to update current records that are incomplete (or incorrect), as long as the data you're entering is from the primary source (the publication itself) or from a reliable secondary source. Thanks. Mhhutchins 18:24, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Series

Series data should only be entered into the parent title record (when there are variant titles such as the work by Farland/Wolverton.) Also, be sure to use the exact series name as already given in the database, or you'll be creating a separate series ("Black Company" should have been "Chronicles of the Black Company"; "Paksenarrion" should have been "Paksenarrion Universe".) Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 01:45, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Cover image uploads

I have to delete the file you uploaded for the cover of Shattered Shields because it was uploaded incorrectly. According to the "Semi-automated Procedure" in the help page for uploading files, you should use the link on the publication record labeled "Upload cover scan".

It goes on to say:

Once the file has been uploaded, the image's wiki page will appear. In order to get the URL (address) for the image you just uploaded, left click anywhere on the image and copy the URL from your browser's address window. (Or right click on the image and choose "Copy Image Location".) If you're adding a cover image to a pub record, this is the URL which you would enter into the pub record's "Image URL" field.

So once you have the image's URL, go back to the pub record (it's linked on the image's wiki page) and then click the "Edit This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu. This opens up an edit page. Under the Publication Metadata section, there's a field labeled "Image URL:" Enter the URL of the image you uploaded into this field, and then click on the "Submit Data" button at the bottom of the page. Once the submission has been moderated the cover image will be linked to the publication record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 02:14, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Little Green Men--Attack!

As your book seems (per amazon) to be situated more than 90 days in the future, please resubmit in early 2017. Hauck 08:08, 4 September 2016 (UTC) Ok. Will do. Bryan

The X-Files: Secret Agendas

Hello BryanThomasS. I have approved your submission, but normalized the publisher's name to IDW Publishing. Thanks, Linguist 09:23, 13 September 2016 (UTC).

I have also modified the series name to "The X-Files Universe". You may nevertheless create a "Maberry" subfile, and number the anthologies in it. Linguist 09:27, 13 September 2016 (UTC).

Ok, Thanks. Bryan

Question about Shattered Shields

Hi, I have a question about your verified copy of Shattered Shields. I am looking at the mass-market paperback version rather than the trade paperback. For the story "A Cup of Wisdom", the author's name appears as Joseph Zieja rather than Joe Zieja. This is true both in the Table of Contents and on the title page of the story. Is this true for your trade paperback copy? Thanks. BungalowBarbara 05:35, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Yes, that is correct. BTS

Straight Outta Tombstone &

I processed your last two submissions, but had to make some changes:

  • Straight Outta Tombstone: This book was already in our database. It's good practice to search by ISBN before adding a new pub. As you provided the contents, I accepted your new submission, imported the contents to the previous entry, and then deleted your entry. That way we don't have a duplicate, but you didn't loose your work.
  • Infinite Stars: As you went to the trouble to enter the contents, I went ahead and accepted this one also. However, we typically do not enter future publications unless it's within 90 days of their announced publication date - we have seen too many changes, cancellations, etc. outside that window.
  • Prices should always be entered with a currency symbol. We deal in multiple currencies.
  • We can only use images from sites that have explicitly given us permission to do so. See ISFDB:Image linking permissions for a list of such sites.
  • Sources should be provided for information. If the book is already published & you have a copy, you can verify it. If that is not the case, you should add a secondary source statement in the publication notes field (ex. "Data from Amazon as of DATE"). In this case since I'm guessing you're the editor since the username matches, I added a statement saying "Information from the editor as of 2017-06-06."

Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 23:41, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Ah ok. Did not see my story listen for Tombstone and thought it wasn't. Will do the ISBN thing next time.
I saw that my PREDATOR antho which releases the same date as INFINITE STARS was in so figured it was okay. Will remember 90 days.
The notes you provided for Infinite Stars stated 10 reprints. I have only identified 9. If you look at the publication, those stories showing prior dates are ones that have already been merged with prior appearances. What is the 10 reprint? Thanks. -- JLaTondre (talk) 01:51, 7 June 2017 (UTC) :::Drake. Published 2016 on Baen.com and then in Year's Best Adventure Sf before mine. BTS
Thanks. I have entered the contents of that anthology. -- JLaTondre (talk) 00:58, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Predator: If It Bleeds

Hello, I've approved your submission but had to change the type of the added record from SHORTFICTION to ESSAY (I supposed that you wrote an essay and not a piece of fiction titled Introduction). I've also disambiguated it (you may write more than on so titled piece in your career). Please note (as said above) that the book is unusually far in the future and should not have been accepted (we usually limit us to three months ahead). Hauck 14:12, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

That's fine. I only added it because the book is there. Also it is first, not last in TOC order.

The Sideman

Hello Bryan. Just an FYI. It's good practice if you'd add a couple of notes citing the copyright page for your PV'd pubs; for example where the cover artist credit is coming from, price, copyright notices and so on. As you've PV'd The Sideman I am assuming you have the book in hand? Also, a note about data source and date of consultation in the notes if it's not on or in the pub is a good thing. Doing so makes it always clear when and where the data was coming from, since eg websites may change or go extinct. I've done that for your pub, citing source for price and publication date - assuming it's not printed on the back cover, of course (if that would be the case, feel free to submit an update, referencing location of the price on or in the book). Cheers!MagicUnk 14:56, 6 February 2020 (EST)

Surviving Tomorrow

I accepted your addition of Surviving Tomorrow, but made some changes to match ISFDB standards:

  • Publication Date: We use the date on the pub. Looking at the Amazon Look Inside, it says "First Edition: October 2020" which matches up to publisher's webpage stating it started shipping in October.
  • Price: The currency symbol needs to be part of the price as there are multiple currencies around the world.
  • Amazon Image: When using an Amazon image, the URL needs to be edited to remove the underscores and everything between.
  • Author Names: There needs to be spaces after the period in initials (so A. C. Crispin).
  • Title Case: ISFDB has specific rules on case. See Case at Template:TitleFields:Title.
  • Titles: Generic titles such as Introduction should be disambiguated with the publication title in parenthesis.

Thanks for your submission. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:05, 25 November 2020 (EST)

Ok, so the shipping in October was the plan but did not actually happen due to Ingram COVID delays and a printing error, so the shipping just started this month. I wasn’t sure what date to use so I chose the Amazon date. As for the other details, I don’t really understand how all that works. I was just trying to give you as much accurate data as I could to save you time. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by BryanThomasS (talkcontribs) .
Thanks for the information. I updated the notes to reflect it. -- JLaTondre (talk) 08:39, 26 November 2020 (EST)
