Welcome!

Hello, BigFatWookie, and welcome to the ISFDB Wiki! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Note: Image uploading isn't entirely automated. You're uploading the files to the wiki which will then have to be linked to the database by editing the publication record.

Please be careful in editing publications that have been primary verified by other editors. See Help:How to verify data#Making changes to verified pubs. But if you have a copy of an unverified publication, verifying it can be quite helpful. See Help:How to verify data for detailed information.

I hope you enjoy editing here! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will insert your name and the date. If you need help, check out the community portal, or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Mhhutchins 00:53, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Andromeda Spaceways #45

I accepted the submission adding this issue of the magazine, but had to make changes based on the ISFDB standards (there are links in the section above to our help pages which explain our entry standards.) The number of the issue was placed in the title field (usually this is the month of the issue for most magazines.) The binding was changed to "tp" which stands for trade paperback, which is as close to the description you gave that fall within our accepted bindings. The ISSN was removed from the ISBN field (another sort of number entirely) and placed into the Notes field. The dates of the stories are assumed to be the same as that of the issue, unless they were previously printed. I changed all the dates to 2010. Only the first page of a piece's appearance is given in the page number field. Please look it over and submit any changes in an update of the record. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins 00:59, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

I got your message about the dates of the issue and will correct it. It's better to leave comments or questions here on the ISFDB Wiki pages, and not on the pub records themselves. You should respond here to any questions that are left on your talk page, or you can initiate questions at the Help Desk or the Moderator Noticeboard. Thanks.
Now, about the date of #45. If the print version was released in May, what are the dates (both print and pdf) of #44? Should the date for that issue be corrected, or did it appear after #45? Mhhutchins 02:05, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
Can you give me a source for the May 2010 date of the print issue? You can update the record giving the source in the Note field (not in the Note to Moderator field, which does not become part of the record.) Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:08, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
2010 was a bit of a mess. Nominally, #44 was to have been February and #45 to have been April. #42 and #43 were pushed back to January and April respectively, while #44 was greatly delayed. In the end, #45 was released in May but held back for a joint mail-out with #44 late in June. #45 is therefore nominally April, listed in the Editorial as Autumn (southern hemisphere), and received by subscribers in June/July (although contributors received it earlier). #44 is nominally February, was released after #45 but received by subscribers at the same time. The .pdf downloads of issues #42 to #45 were staggered to give each approximately 1 month online, although I don't recall the exact dates. I'm afraid I don't have documentation for any of this, except that it was a cause of much frustration at the time!
My apologies, also, in that I've left some information out of the contents. (Editorial, internal illustrations.) I shall go and update this. BigFatWookie 03:16, 8 June 2011 (UTC)
I've accepted the update and change the title of the editorial. We have to disambiguate such generic titles by appending the name of the publication parenthetically. Mhhutchins 04:52, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

A Thousand Faces

Submission adding this pub was accepted, but some changes were made, and a few more are needed. The issue number and date were added to the title field, and it was linked to the cover image on Amazon. You also need to give the publisher name. I'm assuming you have a copy of this issue as well as Andromeda #45 above. You should do a primary verification of each record if you do have a copy. If you don't, you should record in the note field the source of your data. Also, please consider adding the remaining contents of A Thousand Faces if they're spec-fic. If not, you should note that only the spec-fic content has been recorded in the record. Thanks. Mhhutchins 02:30, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Dates on the ISFDB

The standard format for all dates is YYYY-MM-DD. If you don't use this format (for instance in the update to this record), the dates will default to 0000-00-00, which means an unknown date of publication. Thanks. Mhhutchins 04:54, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Sourcing your data

It is very important that you give the source for your data if you don't have the publication in hand. This source should be stated in the Note field of the record. If you have the pub, then you should do a Primary Verification ("Verify This Pub" link under the Editing Tools menu). This lets us know that you have the pub and are willing to answer any inquiries about it. Thanks. Mhhutchins 04:58, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Andromeda Spaceways #56

Hi, Just to let you know that I've added a cover image from Galactic Central to your verified publication here. Galqctic Central is one of the sites for which we have permission to link images. The images they have for ASIF are here. --clarkmci / j_clark 09:19, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Lemon Moon Review

About this record: I changed the type from COLLECTION to NONFICTION. For ISFDB purposes, a COLLECTION is defined as the publication containing more than one work of fiction by a single author. I also corrected the spelling of the foreword from "Foreward" (sic) to "Foreword (Lemon Moon Review #1: Sisyphean Night Off)" (generic titles must be disamgibuated), and the type from NONFICTION (reserved for book-length works) to ESSAY.

I have left the content titles as entered, but if the film title was not part of the essay title as published, it should be removed from the title. You have the option to update individual title records to add a note about the subject of the review. Otherwise the title field should reflect how the work's title appears in the publication. Mhhutchins 15:38, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

I've removed the note about the ebook edition and created a separate publication record for it. I've also linked the Amazon file for the cover to each record. Mhhutchins 15:43, 22 July 2015 (UTC)

Much appreciated. The film titles are indeed part of the essay titles. BigFatWookie 04:40, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Currency

Are the prices you're giving in records for Andromeda and other publications in American dollars or Australian dollars? If the latter, enter the currency as "A$". Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:38, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Andromeda #59

I've replaced the last two reviews in this record with essays. The REVIEW type should only be used for reviews of works which are eligible for the database. Those two science books would not be eligible under the current standards. Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:11, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

I also changed the starting page for a couple of stories. The rules state:

Exception for works which have illustrations preceding their title pages - If a magazine presents artwork for a story or essay preceding the piece's title page, and it is apparent that the art accompanies the text, the starting page of the story or essay should be the page number of the artwork which illustrates it.

Thanks. Mhhutchins 17:20, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

Fish Fingers and Custard, #16

This appears to be a fanzine devoted to Doctor Who, and probably not eligible for the database. We try to limit fanzines to those which about speculative fiction, and not those which are media-oriented. I'm holding your submission so that you can present your case on the ISFDB:Community Portal for its inclusion in the database. Mhhutchins|talk 03:42, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

From what I've seen of Fish Fingers and Custard, it's a fanzine devoted as much to the wider Doctor Who universe as to the programme itself. As there's a tremendous amount of Doctor Who fiction referenced in the database (Russell T. Davies' 'Damaged Goods', for instance, which is the subject of the FF&C #16 article 'Davies' Damaged Goods'), I'd have thought FF&C would itself be eligible. But that's the extent of my case. I'm happy to leave this to your discretion. BigFatWookie 03:19, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
Book publications by authors who are genre-related, even if the work itself isn't genre, would be eligible for the database. In the case of non-genre or media-oriented periodicals (including fanzines), we only allow those contents which are fiction. For example, if Playboy publishes a story by Bradbury, that issue would be eligible, but only the story would be included in the record's content listing. (See here for that example.) But if Playboy published an article about Star Trek (or Doctor Who) in that very same issue, that article wouldn't be eligible for the db. If Fangoria published a spec-fic story, it would be eligible, but an article about Stephen King would not. If The New Yorker published a story by Ursula K. Le Guin, it would be eligible, but a review of one of her novels would not be. I hope you understand the distinction here. Borderline cases may be hard to distinguish, but without guidelines, there would be a slow, almost imperceptible shift from a speculative fiction database to a sf media database. Sourcing data

When creating a new publication record, you must provide the source for the data. There are several options on the entry form. If none of those apply, then you must enter the secondary source in the Note field (not the "Note to Moderator" field.) I have accepted the submissions adding Shoreline of Infinity #1 to the database, but made changes based on the Amazon.com listing. If you have a copy do a primary verification of the record and make any necessary changes in the Note field. Thanks for contributing. Mhhutchins|talk 19:02, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

Lemon Moon Promethean Dark Side: 2010-2013, The Eagle Has Landed

I'm holding your submission to add this publication until you're able to answer a few questions.

Is the title exactly given as "Lemon Moon Promethean Dark Side: 2010-2013, The Eagle Has Landed" on the publication's title page? The cover image on the publisher's website doesn't give the date range.

Are there any works of fiction included in the book? If not, it should be typed as NONFICTION (used for collections of essays.)

Are the content titles entered into the submission as they appear in the publication, i.e. the subject of the essays are in brackets?

What is the format of the ebook? If it's anything other than PDF, the page count field should be blank (the reader's preference sets the number of pages in most ebook formats like epub and mobi).

Please respond as soon as possible. I can only hold the submission for a few days. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 01:43, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

Sorry, my usual assortment of errors. To clarify:
Yes, the title is given with the date range on the title page.
No, there isn't any fiction.
No, the subjects appear as subtitles, not in brackets.
The format is .epub
Apologies again. BigFatWookie 02:38, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
I will accept the submission and ask that you correct the content titles to conform to how they appear on their respective title pages (not the table of contents). To add subtitle, enter a colon immediately after the title, followed by a space and then the subtitle. Thanks. Mhhutchins|talk 03:57, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
Here is the corrected record. Mhhutchins|talk 04:01, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Shoreline of Infinity, Issue 1 Summer 2015

Hello,

I re-dated all the items inside of this publication based on our rules for magazines dates. The original date that Amazon reports is now in the notes. Thanks! Annie 21:43, 20 September 2019 (EDT)

Shoreline of Infinity, Summer 2015

I put the ISBN there that's printed on back cover of Your verified pub, seen on an Amazon.com scan. --Zapp 16:08, 9 September 2021 (EDT)
