Author Updates

Thank you for the set of submissions for author updates. A couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. Dates: always use the YYYY-MM-DD format. If only the year is known, enter (for example) "1933-00-00"
  2. Legal Names: use the format LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME MIDDLENAME

Sorry, forgot to mention that we can't link to images without the permission of the original site, especially links to Wikipedia images. I accepted your submission but deleted the image link. MHHutchins 12:13, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Piggy-backing on Michael's note, I currently have a few of your submissions on hold. In most cases the problem is with linking to a site which hasn't given us an explicit permission to link to its images. In a few cases there appear to be typos in our data, which may take additional work to sort out. I'll get back to you tomorrow after I have done more digging :) Ahasuerus 02:14, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Olga Larionova

I have approved your update for Olga Larionova, but a couple of points to notice.

  • Unlike our other name fields, the Legal Name field is formatted as Lastname, Fisrtname.
  • We are not allowed to link to wikipedia images, so i have removed the image url.

Valery Tsyganov

Your proposed edit to the author data for Valery Tsyganov includes an image URL http://publ.lib.ru/ARCHIVES/C/CYGANOV_Valeriy_Nikolaevich/.Online/Cyganov_V._N.-1..jpg. The ISFDB does not have general permission to use images from the http://publ.lib.ru site, and as that site's text is not in English, I cannot check what their posted permissions might be. Please see ISFDB:Image linking permissions for more on what permission we need and why we need it.

M. Krivich and O. Olgin

What is the source for indicating that the legal name of "M. Krivich" is "Mikhail Albertovich Gurevich"? I found no obvious source is a quick google search. Also we note legal names (unlike other name fields) as Lastname, Fisrstname, so if this is accurate, the entry should be "Gurevich, Mikhail Albertovich". But that can be easily corrected. I am holding this edit, pending clarification of the source of the legal name. -DES Talk 15:42, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Much the same question arises with your proposed author update of "O. Olgin" to have the legal name "Olgert Markovich Libkin". In addition, this specifies an image URL of http://images.km.ru/literature/Persona/Libkin.jpg. As I mentioned above, the ISFDB needs permission from sites linked to for author or cover images. I am also placing this submission on hold until these issues are resolved. -DES Talk 15:48, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

One source would be this online mini-biography of these two authors, which is apparently copied verbatim from Gakov's Entsiklopedia Fantastiki (1995). Ahasuerus 23:25, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
I regret that I can not read that, as the paged linked to appears to be in Russian. If you are satisfied, feel free to approve. I did do a google search for data on these authors, but found nothing helpful. -DES Talk 23:32, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
My Russian is reasonably good and I even wrote a paper on the history of Russian SF some decades ago. I still have a number of Russian SF books (including Gakov's encyclopedia mentioned above) in my collection. Let's see... yup, that Web page uses Gakov's article verbatim, just like I suspected. The 1995 version of the encyclopedia is missing Krivich-Gurevich's patronymic, but it may have been identified and added later. Ahasuerus 23:46, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

M. Greshnov and Vladimir Shcherbakov

In the case of M. Greshnov, the legal name ("Mikhail Nikolaevich Greshnov ") is close enough to the canonical name that I would not have held things up, but the image source provided is "http://www.rusf.ru/fc/img/big/greshnov.jpg" is again from a site we have no permission to deep-link to, and their statements on the English language versions of their pages purport to prohibit "public use" of their content. Can you clarify the permission status of this site and image? -DES Talk 16:03, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Much the same situation occurs in regard to Vladimir Shcherbakov. The image URL given is "http://publ.lib.ru/ARCHIVES/SCH/SCHERBAKOV_Vladimir_Ivanovich/.Online/Scherbakov_V._I.-2002.09..jpg", and we need deep-linking permission, as mentioned above. I am rejecting these submissions due to prolonged non-response here, after another editor has applied all the valid data, not including the image link, for which we have no permisison. -DES Talk 15:19, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
The same situation in regard to M. Ibraghimbekov, we do not have permisison to deep-link to the site http://archivsf.narod.ru/image/autors/ibragim1.jpg , and the other data has been captured, so i am rejectign the submisison. -DES Talk 15:25, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Gansovsky and Krapivin

I have approved the addition of Gansovsky's date of birth and removed the Russian Wikipedia URL as per the comments above. Krapivin, OTOH, is pretty messy. Contento claims that "I’m Going to Meet My Brother" aka "Meeting My Brother" were published as by "Vitaly Krapivin", but my copy of the Dell edition of Judith Merril's Path Into the Unknown correctly attributes the story to "Vladislav Krapivin". MELVYL claims that the MacGibbon & Kee edition also used "Vladislav", so I am not sure what's going on here. Ahasuerus 23:55, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Granin
