    1. First published in The Works of Guy de Maupassant [17 volumes] (Akron, Ohio: St. Dunstan Society, 1903; edited and published by M. Walter Dunne). It is not clear which of the many translators who contributed to the complete edition, only some of whose names are known, worked on "Le Horla". (See here for some more information on the Dunne edition.) This translation, or a revised version of it (see No. 5), has been reprinted many times, almost always uncredited, often with slight textual variations. This text (which can be heard on LibriVox) actually is nearly identical to the uncredited 1903 Dunne text. (Did England write that one, then?)
