I hope this is of use to people in understanding what I am suggesting. In all cases the symbol * indicates that the following title/author combination has no publications recorded in the db, and the phrase "also as by" indicates that the preceding non-VT title/author combo does have at least one publication recorded in the db. In all cases where there is exactly one VT, and the title of the VT is identical to the title of the parent record, a single-line form, with either "as by" or "also as by" is used. In all cases where the title differs, or there is more than one VT, a multi-line form is used. The single-line vs multi-line format is not used to indicate the existence or absence of publications of the parent (canonical) title/author combo. -DES Talk 15:41, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Note that for this to be implemented, the code must be able to determine the presence or absnece of at least one record published under the parent (canonical) title in all cases where one or more VTs exist without an excessive performance penalty. Tests on author biblio pages with many titles, some of which have many publications, for example Isaac Asimov or Robert A. Heinlein, would be a good idea, IMO. -DES Talk 15:57, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Here is the same set of mockups, using a text indicator instead of the asterisk. They are otherwise identical to those above.
