Template:Cover Image Data/Doc

From ISFDB
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The Cover Image Data template is placed on the image description page of a publication cover image used under fair use.

When using the "Upload new cover scan" option from the database, this template will be automatically applied to the page. That is the preferred method of use. However, the template can also be manually placed. There are also some optional fields that can be manually added to the automatic template if desired.

Usage

The minimal use (omitting parameters that can safely be left to their defaults) is:

{{Cover Image Data
|Title = <publication title>
|Edition = <date and/or publisher>
|Pub = <the publication record number or tag>
|Publisher = <Name of publisher>
|Artist = <name of cover artist>
|Source = <origin of image>
}}

The maximal use, including all parameters, is:

{{Cover Image Data
|Title = <publication title>
|Edition = <date and/or publisher>
|Pub = <the publication record number or tag>
|Publisher = <Name of publisher>
|Artist = <name of cover artist>
|ArtistId = <id of cover artist>
|Artist2 = <name of cover artist>
|Artist2Id = <id of cover artist>
|Artist3 = <name of cover artist>
|Artist3Id = <id of cover artist>
|Artist4 = <name of cover artist>
|Artist4Id = <id of cover artist>
|Artist5 = <name of cover artist>
|Artist5Id = <id of cover artist>
|CpyrtHolder = <name of the actual copyright holder>
|Source = <origin of image>
|Side = <back or front or spine>
|AddRat = <Additional fair use rationale>
|LowRes = <Yes or No>
}}

Parameter case (including the initial capital letter) is significant. The parameter order is not significant, but the above order is suggested for consistency.

The placeholder values above should be replaced with the actual value for the applicable cover image. For example, <publication title> should be replaced with the title of publication (example: |Title = Lord of the Rings).

Parameters

Parameter Description Default
Title The actual title of the book or other publication whose image is being displayed. Required Field
Edition Ideally should specify the year and publisher, as "Ace 1983", or some other text string which will distinguish the pictured edition from other publications of the same title. Required Field
Pub The publication record number or tag. Must be a valid argument to {{P}}. (Id may be used instead.) Required Field
Publisher The name of the publisher of the publication displayed, for proper attribution. Required Field
CpyrtHolder The name of the copyright holder of the image, if known with reasonable assurance, particularly if this is not the publisher. For example if a movie tie-in edition has a cover that is a still or poster for the movie, this would be the production company (such as "Paramount Pictures"). Omit if not known. Defaults to "the publisher or the cover artist".
Artist The name of the cover artist. Used to link to the artist's summary page unless the artist is "Unknown" or ArtistId supplied. If the cover is plain except for lettering, or otherwise has no real "Art" and no credited creator, specify "Artist=None". Defaults to "Unknown".
ArtistId The record number of the cover artist. Used to link to artist summary page via the record number when artist's name has characters (single quotes, non-ASCII) that cause linking by name to fail. In order for this field to work, the "Artist" field also has to be filled in. Defaults to unused.
Artist2 The name of the second cover artist. Used to link to the artist's summary page unless Artist2Id supplied. Defaults to unused.
Artist2Id The record number of the second cover artist, if known. Used to link to artist summary page via the record number when artist's name has characters (single quotes, non-ASCII) that cause linking by name to fail. In order for this field to work, the "Artist2" field also has to be filled in. Defaults to unused.
Artist3 The name of the third cover artist. Used to link to the artist's summary page unless Artist3Id supplied. Defaults to unused.
Artist3Id The record number of the third cover artist, if known. Used to link to artist summary page via the record number when artist's name has characters (single quotes, non-ASCII) that cause linking by name to fail. In order for this field to work, the "Artist2" field also has to be filled in. Defaults to unused.
Artist4 The name of the fourth cover artist. Used to link to the artist's summary page unless Artist4Id supplied. Defaults to unused.
Artist4Id The record number of the fourth cover artist, if known. Used to link to artist summary page via the record number when artist's name has characters (single quotes, non-ASCII) that cause linking by name to fail. In order for this field to work, the "Artist2" field also has to be filled in. Defaults to unused.
Artist5 The name of the fifth cover artist. Used to link to the artist's summary page unless Artist5Id supplied. Defaults to unused.
Artist5Id The record number of the fifth cover artist, if known. Used to link to artist summary page via the record number when artist's name has characters (single quotes, non-ASCII) that cause linking by name to fail. In order for this field to work, the "Artist2" field also has to be filled in. Defaults to unused.
Source Name of the user who scanned the image or website where the image was obtained. Defaults to "Unknown".
Side Should be "back" if this is a (rare) back-cover image, or "spine" for an image of the cover spine. Use "both" if both sides of a Dos-a-Dos book are included. Defaults to "front".
AddRat Additional rationale. Any text spelling out additional reasons why this image qualifies for fair use. Should be omitted unless there is an additional rationale to specify. Defaults to blank.
LowRes Should normally be "Yes", to indicate that this is a relatively low-res image. If the value is "Yes" a statement to this effect is displayed. If the value is "No", or if the parameter is omitted, a warning text will be displayed instead. Values other than "Yes" or "No" may cause the template to malfunction. Defaults to "Yes".
