Talk:Data Submission Formats

From ISFDB
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Copying this question from the policy pages... Ok, guys, I've looked at the xml formats and I gotta tell you. I have, from that page, absolutely NO IDEA how I would format an xml entry to give you the table-of-contents of an issue of JBU. I'm _willing_ you understand, but I'll be gosh darned if I can see how I tell you that A. Bertram Chandler's "The Giant Killer" was reprinted in Vol 2 Number 1 of JBU in June of 2007. What would that XML look like? We would PREFER to have an automated submission, but golly-gee-wilikers-batman, I don't see a way to do that. (I'm probably being stupid.) Still needed

The examples help, but the list of required and permitted tags for the various publication and title records is still needed, IMO. In particular, the meaning and use of the "Subject" tag and how it differers from the "Title" tag is unclear, as is the various possible things that can go in the content tag for PubUpdate and NewPub records. This isn't yet quite enough to let someone construct useful submissions, i think. -DES Talk 17:08, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

They're on their way - only had time to collect the examples last night. There are other formats to include as well. Alvonruff 20:23, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Excellant. I trust I didn't sond in any way neagative.
By the way, once I have some computer issues in order on my home system, I plan to downlaod and set up a local copy of the ISFDB, and see if I can be of assistance in the programming departmetn -- subject to your control, of course. I don't mean to be one of those who is ever-ready to propose jobs -- for other people to do. -DES Talk 20:35, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
And further by the way, a large thank you for all you have done to create and develop the ISFDB. -DES Talk 20:35, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Let me know when you're ready. We have a CVS repository on SourceForge that everybody keeps in sync with. In fact the first update made by someone other than myself was performed today by Roglo. Alvonruff 00:45, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I will. The specs for the Pub-type records no look great. One minor nit: in a couple of palces you say that "For non-novels, some amount of content may be associated with the publication". But novel pubs often have introductions, prafaces, afterwords, etc listed as essays, and somtiems include "bonus stories" -- a single short work published along with the novel. -DES Talk 05:14, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
