Moving here from rec.arts.sf.written

Ahasuerus wrote on rec.arts.sf.written:

I have protected the main Wiki page (http://isfdb.tamu.edu/wiki/index.php/ISFDB:DAW) to prevent random edits. The ISFDB has had its share of vandalism, link spam and so forth, and multiple copies of a 160Kb document can get unwieldy.

Protecting the page seems like a good idea plus it's not clear just what is getting listed. What I mean by that is there are DAW printings where they did not note the “DAW Book Collectors No.” (DBCN) and/or the U-code / Order #.

For example, I have a 3rd printing of “The Warriors of Dawn” by Foster, M.A. It's coded UW1291 but does not show a DBCN. For UW1291 DAW's list says the Logo # is 135. I don't know if DAW ever printed a copy of UW1291 that stated “DBCN 135” or if someone at DAW knew the DBCN was 135 and included that on their list.

My copy of UE1599 is similar in that it does not state a DBCN, and yet DAW’s list has a logo # for it. It’s one of those absence of evidence is not evidence of absence problems as it’s possible DAW printed a book that does state both UE1599 and 256.

The pattern seems to be that sometimes for a later printing DAW would not state the DBCN though that's never stated on DAW's list.

Related to this are the “Cap Kennedy” books where DAW’s list uses Logo #s such as “CK14” where the actual books never stated “CK14” but instead would spell out “Cap Kennedy #14” in large letters above the title.

Thus while the list may be quite helpful for ordering books from DAW and giving an overall idea of what DAW published I can’t say it reflects exactly what DAW stated in their books. I suppose the list should have a comment about that it seems to contain a mix of “derived” and “stated” information and that it's possible you will not be able to locate a physical copy of a book that's shown in the list and that you will find (or have) books that do not have a perfect match to what's in DAW's list.

I also noticed that in DAW's list the author names tend to be consistently formatted as “Last, First” but are exceptions. The biggest is that every time there are two or more authors DAW used “Last, First & First Last.” Search the page for “&” to see many examples of this starting with “Bradley, Marion Zimmer & Paul Edwin Zimmer.”

I suppose I should feed in a correction in that UJ1551’s author is listed as “Christopher Stasheff” but that should be formatted as “Stasheff, Christopher.” Marc Kupper

In thinking about merging this table/list with the ISFDB database do you think it would be worthwhile to try a data cleanup on the list/table? The DAW list seems to be a product ordering sheet that must have been sent to bookstores at one time. In that sense, it does not try to reflect information that was actually stated in each publication that DAW put out. For example, the table lists an ISBN for every book though we know that DAW started out with the U codes (no ISBN or SBN), then a quasi-SBN that looked like "451-UQ1034-095" on the spine for a while, before printing ISBNs on the spine and eventually bar-coding the books. Perhaps adding a book coding field to the table is sufficient? Should each printing get noted? --Marc Kupper 03:21, 26 Oct 2006 (CDT)
While it’s getting away from the original intent of DAW’s list something I’d like to do is to add rows for the gaps, vaporware, and non-book products. For example, from the year 1974 to 2000 DAW skipped over all ISBNs ending in X. Someone looking at the list may wonder why Order # Ux1771 is missing. Ideally we’d have a row for Ux1771 that notes the ISBN would be 0-87997-771-X and the comment links to a detailed explanation about these ISBNs and the resulting “skipped” Order #s. While it’s rare DAW sometimes skipped an order # or more commonly, has announced a book but never published it. DAW also issued ISBNs for retail sales display boxes. For example 0-7564-0241-7 is a "Author: Britain (Tie-In 18-Copy Mixed Floor Display)" of Kristen Britain's works. --Marc Kupper 03:21, 26 Oct 2006 (CDT)

Round 1 Corrections from rec.arts.sf.written

The following corrections were applied to the DAW list from Don Erikson's corrections of 22 Sep 2006. Each of the bullet points are from Don's list and the comment on the following lines are from Marc Kupper as the corrections were verified prior to applying them.

  • #9 add UE1521 0-87997-521-0 Tactics of Mistake = Dickson, Gordon R. -$1.75
This looks fine though I am concerned that "UJ1526" was not found by Google and only one AbeBook’s seller mentions “UJ1526.” Many instances of the ISBN were found.
  • #110 add UE1742 0-87997-742-6 Green Star Saga #3: By the Light of the Green Star = Carter, Lin $2.25
It turned out this publication was already in the DAW list though mis-filed under Logo # 180. I corrected the Logo # to 110 and moved the row to be with the other publications for Logo #110.
  • #116 add UJ1526 0-87997-526-1 The Star Road = Dickson, Gordon R. $1.95
It turned out this publication was already in the DAW list though mis-filed under logo # 176. I corrected the Logo # to 116 and moved the row to be with the other publications under Logo #116. Marc Kupper 23:32, 6 Nov 2006 (CST)

Round 2 Corrections from rec.arts.sf.written

The following corrections provided by Don Erikson when he contributed the list on September 22, 2006.

#30 is UY1185, not 85 Green Star Saga #1:Uunder the Green Star = Carter, Lin
#45 is UY1186, not 86 Garan the Eternal = Norton, Andre
#64 UQ1064 -typo- Testament Xxi should be Testament XXI = Snyder, Guy
#76 is UY1187, not 87 The Crystal Gryphon = Norton, Andre

The following corrections were provided by Marc Kupper in http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.sf.written/msg/bfad2a55ae7df9cf on October 21 2006:

...here are some corrections to the Order # field.

        Logo # Order # ISBN #
566 423 UE1797 0-87997-597-0 Order # should be UE1597
443 338 UE2460 0-87997-460-5 Order # should be UE1460
1604 1072 UE2765 0-88677-756-9 Order # should be UE2756

The following are probably easier to fix with a global search/replace as some Order #s used an "l" (ell) instead of a "1" (one) and one used an "O" (oh) instead of a "0" (zero).

Change Order # from UWl311 to UW1311
Change Order # from UWl312 to UW1312
Change Order # from UWl313 to UW1313
Change Order # from UWl319 to UW1319
Change Order # from UWl326 to UW1326
Change Order # from UWl329 to UW1329
Change Order # from UWl332 to UW1332
Change Order # from UWl335 to UW1335
Change Order # from UWl341 to UW1341
Change Order # from UEl811 to UE1811
Change Order # from UEl9lO to UE1910 (Three corrections needed as this one has UE-ell-9-ell-oh)

ISBN Checksum Corrections

I've been thinking about how to best merge and verify this list from DAW against my own list. I've already reported on the invalid Order #s and here I did a pass where I checked the DAW list for badly formatted ISBN # values. With this I verified both the hyphenation and the ISBN checksum. The hyphenation was correct in all cases but nine rows had an invalid checksum. With each of these I then Googled up the "bad" value from the DAW using

"0-87997-726-6" OR "0879977266"

and discovered the only page these were found on is http://isfdb.tamu.edu/wiki/index.php/ISFDB:DAW which is the page our DAW list is on. I then Googled for ISBNs with corrected checksums using

"0-87997-726-4" OR "0879977264"

and for each of these noted the page counts plus did a casual eyeball check to verify that Google found pages about the book this ISBN seemed to reference in DAW's list. In all nine cases the corrected ISBN found multiple pages about the correct book and so I believe I can be pretty safe in saying that DAW's list is wrong for each of these and the published books all had the correct ISBN.

DAW ISBN # 0-87997-726-6 corrected to 0-87997-726-4. Corrected ISBN on 36 pages.
DAW ISBN # 0-87997-585-1 corrected to 0-87997-585-7. Corrected ISBN on 17 pages. See note below.
DAW ISBN # 0-87997-515-5 corrected to 0-87997-515-6. Corrected ISBN on 13 pages.
DAW ISBN # 0-87997-827-8 corrected to 0-87997-827-9. Corrected ISBN on 9 pages.
DAW ISBN # 0-88677-393-4 corrected to 0-88677-393-8. Corrected ISBN on 75 pages.
DAW ISBN # 0-88677-444-4 corrected to 0-88677-444-6. Corrected ISBN on 292 pages.
DAW ISBN # 0-88677-453-8 corrected to 0-88677-453-5. Corrected ISBN on 72 pages.
DAW ISBN # 0-88677-492-2 corrected to 0-88677-492-6. Corrected ISBN on 83 pages.
DAW ISBN # 0-88677-512-6 corrected to 0-88677-512-4. Corrected ISBN on 78 pages.

Note - While Google plus a scan of Amazon USA, Amazon UK, Bookfinder, and Abebooks did not find 0-87997-585-1 today I had this in my "DAW bucket" which is a collection of unverified DAW related data I've scraped off the web. I suspect someone somewhere misread the last 7 for a 1 and that there is no physical copy of a book with ISBN 0-87997-585-1. Marc Kupper 2006-10-24 16:31 (PDT)

There is an ISBN validator at http://www.trussel.com/books/isbn.htm and it reports that 0-87997-585-1 is an invalid ISBN. Also, you can enter an ISBN at http://used.addall.com , which will then search 100 million used books currently for sale, or http://www.worldcat.org , which will search 10 billion records in 10,000 libraries worldwide (available on the Web since August 2006). Ahasuerus 19:12, 25 Oct 2006 (CDT)
I'm aware of the ISBN validators but was operating under the assumption that DAW could have published an edition with an invalid ISBN. Hence, when I saw the invalid ISBN’s in DAW’s list I searched for both the invalid and valid versions of the ISBN to make sure that perhaps there was an edition out in the wild with an invalid ISBN. Happily, that was not the case. --Marc Kupper 02:09, 26 Oct 2006 (CDT)

Round 3 Corrections from rec.arts.sf.written

Ahasuerus, here's a second round of corrections to the table. Something I'm doing with my personal list which is an Excel spreadsheet is that I added seven new columns to store the raw data from the DAW table plus there is a notes/comments column where I'm noting the corrections. I also color code the corrected fields. I'm thinking the same may work well here though that means converting the table from a <pre> block into a table. In the long run I believe it'll be a lot easier for people to read then having to go though all the footnotes. When practical, I'm providing a source reference for each of my corrections.

Two more corrections to the Order #
        Logo # Order # ISBN #
343 272 UE1350 0-87997-350-1 Order # UE1350 should be UJ1350. See Note 1.
578 429 UJ1610 0-87997-610-1 Order # UJ1610 should be UE1610. See Note 2.

Price correction:
        Logo # Order # ISBN #
291 234 UY1292 0-87997-292-0 Price is listed as $1.50 but should be $1.25. See Note 3.

Logo # correction
635 154 UE1672 0-87997-672-1 The logo # should be 463. See note 4.

(I would have done the notes as internal links but Editing help shows an empty page...)

Note 1 - Order # UE1350 should be UJ1350. This was spotted because the UJ books are $1.95. I don't have a copy of the book but Google and AbeBooks confirm that UE1350 was never used and the book was issued under UJ1350.

Note 2 - Order # UJ1610 should be UE1610. This was spotted because the UJ books are $1.95 and this book is listed at $2.25. I have a copy of this book plus Google and AbeBook searches seem to confirm that UJ1610 was never used and others have UE1610.

Note 3 - The price for UY1292 is listed as $1.50 and should be $1.25. This was spotted as all of the UY Order #s are priced at $1.25. A search of Google/AbeBooks for UY1292 confirms that copies exist at $1.25 and there's no mention of copies at $1.50.

--Marc Kupper 02:14, 26 Oct 2006 (CDT)

Note 4 - The Logo # for UE1672 / 0-87997-672-1 is listed as 154 but should be 463. This is one of the very few DAW titles published under two logo #s. Note that while the logo # changed they kept the original printing date from #154 (June-1975) and listed this as 4th and then 5th printings. For the 6th printing (UE1776 / 0-87997-776-0) DAW went back to Logo #154. I don’t know which logo # was used with the 7th printing (UE2127 / 0-88677-127-7). --Marc Kupper 01:07, 28 Oct 2006 (CDT)

Additional Corrections - While the corrections below are not part of the rec.arts.sf.written discussion I'm including them here as I was doing a verification pass that found the items below and then found the items I had already documented in this section. It was easier to apply the rec.arts.sf.written corrections along with the ones below in one round of updates to the table. Marc Kupper 19:59, 8 Nov 2006 (CST)

  • For ISBN 0-87997-170-3 (“The 1975 Annual World's Best SF” edited by Donald A. Wollheim) the Order # was listed as UY1170 at $1.25. This was corrected UW1170 at $1.50. Google found one page listing UY1170 (at $1.50) but that page had a cover image available showing UW1170 at $1.50 meaning the page is in error and no publications of UY1170 were found. Google and AbeBooks lists multiple instances of UW1170 at $1.50.
  • Global search/replace “Sf” with “SF” in the publication/series titles.
  • Added a row for Logo #421, Order #UE1595, 0-87997-595-4, "Terra SF" edited by Richard D. Nolane with a price of $2.50. The DAW list had $2.25 but copies seem to exist at both prices and a cover image was found for $2.50. Marc Kupper 19:59, 8 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • For ISBN 0-87997-388-9 (“The Island Snatchers” by George H. Smith) the Order # was listed as UE1388 at $1.75. This was corrected UW1170 at $1.50 as I have a copy. A Google and AbeBooks search for UE1388 found no copies.
  • For ISBN 0-87997-459-1 (“The 1979 Annual World's Best SF” edited by Donald A. Wollheim) the Order # was listed as UW1459 at $1.50. This was corrected to UE1459 at $2.25. A Google and AbeBooks search for UW1459 found no copies while a search for UE1459 found two only two instances. The cover price comes from my own DAW list but I did not note what the original source of that price was. Marc Kupper 23:32, 8 Nov 2006 (CST)

Conversion of the list to a wikitable

I believe I'm ready to create a wikitable version of the list. At the moment I have the list in an Excel spreadsheet and added a column that output each row using the tab-delimited plain text format the original list is in. It took a little jiggling of my rows to get the order to match but my spreadsheet's output matched the original list. I then modified the output column to instead generate wikitext meaning from a "diff" viewpoint it'll look quite different but the underlying data has not changed yet. Here's an example for comments/feedback.

  1. As you can see - I dropped the unnamed first column as it seemed to be either an intenal DAW thing or an artifact of someone's maintenance of the list. If someone believes this value is useful I could add it back to the display or could add it back as an HTML comment.
  2. I added columns for the Publication Date, Printing, Binding, and a Verified flag. The binding is in there as DAW already has "(Pb)" or "(Hc)" in several titles and so a quick pass can be made to remove those and to instead note "pb" pr "hc" in the binding column.
  3. I would like to color code rows as they get verified using the example color shown in the "snipped" row of the table. At the moment I'm thinking of coding the Verified field with "p" for physical and we'll deal with other codes once we're done with physical checking. The verification process also means the row gets linked to the imdb author and publication records so that in the long run the table will be more like the magazine indexes.
  4. As isfdb does not have a "Series" field I'm leaving the series names in the titles pretty much the way DAW has them. It does mean a title may not exactly match what's stated in a book. Marc Kupper 23:54, 2 Nov 2006 (CST)
Looks like a good start! The only question that I have is whether we may want to have a separate column for series data? The ISFDB does support Series info, but only at the Title level, not the Publication level. Ahasuerus 00:12, 3 Nov 2006 (CST)
I'll put a Series column after the Author. A title level series should be ok as I don't think DAW ever did a publisher series. Marc Kupper 03:18, 3 Nov 2006 (CST)
In looking at the example table above I'm going to move the John Norman and Cap Kennedy books to the bottom. That'll let the table start with DAW Book #1 (UQ1001) and work its way up from there. The John Norman and Cap Kennedy books are a pain as some titles were standard retail publications with Logo and Order #s, others were never assigned a Logo #, and still other titles were only published as book club editions without a Logo or Order #. Marc Kupper 03:18, 3 Nov 2006 (CST)

Don Erikson Corrections

The following corrections were applied from Don Erikson's corrections list of of 22 Sep 2006. Marc Kupper 22:26, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)

  • Logo # 139, Order # UW1355 - The Big Black Mark by A. Bertrum Chandler - $1.75 4th printing Printed in Canada
This price correction was in error - the book is priced at $1.50 though "4th Canada" was added to the Printing column.
  • #503 UE1773 the Steel Tsar = Moorcock, Mchael -is $2.25 NOT $2.20
  • #605 UE2368 --is #605 NOT #606-- (also out of position) Armor = Steakley, John
I moved the row but suspect something else is in error as the price is listed as $3.95 which is the same as UE1979. I'll leave both rows in place and hopefully physical verification will uncover the correct pricing.
  • #818 UE2422 Flight of the Raven = Roberson, Jennifer -is $4.95 NOT $4.99
    1. 812 UE2385 Shadowplay = Clayton, Jo -is $4.50 NOT $3.95
DAW already had a row at this price using the author name "Clayton, Jo (4/91)." I moved the "(4/91)" to the title.

The following price corrections are from Don Erikson's corrections list of of 22 Sep 2006. Rather than change the price I added new rows to the list as DAW seemed to have changed their policy on always issuing a new Order # and ISBN when they changed the price to instead that they will sometimes change the price while keeping the Order # and ISBN the same.

  • #345 UE1475 Heller's Leap = Wallace, Ian - is $2.25 NOT $1.75
  • #484 UE1735 the Crystals of Mida = Green, Sharon - is $2.95 NOT $3.50
  • #716 UE2207 Godslayer = Reichert, Mickey Zucker -is $2.95 NOT $3.95

ISFDB talk:DAW Corrections

This is a list verification/correction pass where I'm reviewing this page for outstanding corrections. Most of these would have been copy/paste items from usenet or e-mails. Marc Kupper 23:50, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)

  • Related to this are the “Cap Kennedy” books where DAW’s list uses Logo #s such as “CK14” where the actual books never stated “CK14” but instead would spell out “Cap Kennedy #14” in large letters above the title.
I've decided to remove the "CK01" through "CK15" "Logo #s from the list as DAW never used those terms in their publications. This should be ok as the table has the Series column where “Cap Kennedy, Secret Agent of the Spaceways #01” though “Cap Kennedy, Secret Agent of the Spaceways #15” are shown. Marc Kupper 23:50, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • Note 4 - The Logo # for UE1672 / 0-87997-672-1 is listed as 154 but should be 463.
Earlier in the list cleanup I had moved the row for UE1672 so that it’s with Logo # 154. This allowed all of the editions of “The Birthgrave” to be grouped together in the list but left a gap at Logo # 463. I decided to correct this gap by adding a row for Logo # 463 with the title “'-- See UE1672 which is filed under Logo #154 ---.“ Marc Kupper 00:08, 14 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • Fixed the logo # for UJ1551. This was overwritten by accident in an earlier edit.

Fixing Author Names

The existing DAW list has the author names listed as “Last, First” and if there is more than one author or editor the list uses “First Last” for the second and following names. My question is – do we want to keep the names in this format or should the list get changed to use “First Last” for consistency with the rest of isfdb? Marc Kupper 00:31, 11 Nov 2006 (CST)

Split list?

What do you thinking about splitting the list into subpages, presumably by hundred? It's a pretty bulky page -- I'm finding the diffs time out, for example. Mike Christie 14:40, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)

I agree the diffs timing out are a pain and what I've been doing is to download the wikitext and to diff it. Your question does bring up something I've been thinking about for this table. At the moment it's maintained by hand but I'd rather drive it off isfdb's data. My thinking is that once the table becomes stable I would then start in on generating this table from isfdb rather than having people edit both the table and isfdb.
Please note that I would rather hold off on breaking the table into sub-pages for the moment because I've been doing the table edits/verification in an Excel spreadsheet and periodically exporting the table to the wiki. It would be easy for me to break the table into ==sections== but separate pages would be extra work as I’d then be diffing and re-uploading each page. I do the diffs to make sure I don’t do accidental table changes. Marc Kupper 17:06, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)
That makes sense. So long as the problem eventually goes away, I think you should organize it for now in the way that minimizes additional work while you get the data into shape. Mike Christie 18:15, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)
I am a little concerned about all of those edits of the 300K table in the wiki history. Though I deleted the columns fropm my spreadsheet a couple days ago I'm thinking of re-adding the original DAW list columns back to the spreadsheet. That would allow you, or anyone, to see the differences from the original data to what's in the list today. I've already been maintaining a Notes column in the spreadsheet where I track what fields got edited plus I color coded the modified fields. I'm trying to introduce as few errors of my own as possible... I’m also thinking of releasing the spreadsheet to as part of the “isfdb source code” as it is much easier to deal with than the wikitext or HTML table plus it contains additional columns such as the story copyright dates, cover artist names, etc. that I did not have room for in the on-line wikitext/HTML table. Marc Kupper 00:51, 14 Nov 2006 (CST)
As a follow-up on this I changed the output from one line of wikitext per row to one line per field. The “diff” function still takes a while (about 30 seconds) but it did highlight my test correction. I suspect not many people will edit the table as it’s 28,972 lines and finding the row/field to edit is a challenge though one field per line makes it much easier to see the data. Miscellaneous DAW List Updates and Corrections

During physical verification some minor errors in the DAW List have been spotted that are documented here.

  • Don Erikson's Corrections had #564 UE2140 Shapechangers = Roberson, Jennifer -is $2.95 NOT $3.95
I have a copy of UE2140 priced at $3.99 and so decided to fix this by inserting a second row for UE2140 at $2.95 (for Don Erikson's copy) and fixed the existing row from $3.95 to $3.99. Marc Kupper 23:19, 11 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • Typo corrections from Don Erikson's list corrections of 22 Sep 2006 - all of these were verified and applied Marc Kupper 23:19, 11 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • #485 UE1736 -typo- Amazon Ii should be Amazons II
  • #518 UE1801 -typo- Gates of Eden should be the Gates of Eden
  • A row existed for UE1951 at $2.25. It turns out I have two copies of this publication, a 1st printing at $2.25, and another 1st printing (!) at $2.50. I added a new row to handle this. Marc Kupper 03:13, 12 Nov 2006 (CST)
This turned out to be an error on my part - The book priced at $2.50 is a Canadian printing and I've started a Community Portal thread to solicit opinions on how to best deal with this in the DAW List. Marc Kupper 19:15, 12 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • A row existed for UE2480 ("Stone of Farewell" by Tad Williams) at $5.99. My copy of UE2480 is priced at $7.99 and so I added a new row. Marc Kupper 03:13, 12 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • The Series column sometimes showed a single hyphen “-”. I updated the wikitext formatter that generates the table to replace these hyphens with a single space. There’s no change to the table data though a diff will show many changes. Marc Kupper 23:33, 12 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • Logo # 395, Order # UJ1551 (“A Wizard In Bedlam” by Christopher Stasheff). The author name was listed as “Christopher Stasheff.” This was corrected to “Stasheff, Christopher” for consistency with the rest of the list. Marc Kupper 23:37, 12 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • Logo # 384, Order # UE1535 (“The 1980 Annual World's Best SF”). The author was listed as “Wollheim, Donald A. (ed)” and this was corrected to “Wollheim, Donald A. & Arthur W. Saha (eds)” to match the title page. Marc Kupper 00:39, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • As enough rows have been physically verified I decided to not highlight rows have been verified via images or the Internet as “verified.” The non-verified rows are “best guess” data, though I'll continue to flag them as "i" or "w" in the Verified column. Marc Kupper 00:45, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • 0-88677-799-2 - Corrected the publication title from “The Alien Shore” to “This Alien Shore.” Marc Kupper 17:09, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)

  • Logo # 779, Order # UE2349 ("The Star Scroll" by Melanie Rawn). The price was listed as $5.99 and was corrected to $5.95 (source: Marc Kupper physical copy) Marc Kupper 19:17, 13 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • Logo # 797, Order # UE2384 - The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams - Added new row for $7.99 price (source: physical copy) Marc Kupper 02:42, 14 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • #96 UE2205 at $3.95 - Hunters of Gor by John Norman - The original list had the comment "(Incorrect Isbn Printed On Book)" as part of the title with no further explanation. This comment was removed from the main list and the publication was added to the "Printing Errors" section. Marc Kupper 10:55, 14 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • #172 UE1339 at $1.75 - Soldier, Ask Not by Gordon R. Dickson - The original list had the comment "(Incorrect Isbn Printed On Book)" as part of the title with no further explanation. This comment was removed from the main list and the publication was added to the "Printing Errors" section. Marc Kupper 10:55, 14 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • #71 - Hunters of the Red Moon by Marion Zimmer Bradley - Dropped Paul Edwin Zimmer as a second author for all publications of this title. The book includes a special dedication to him but Marion Zimmer Bradley also states in the dedication that she was the book's sole author. Marc Kupper 18:32, 14 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • # 741 UE2268 at $3.95 - The Best of Marion Zimmer Bradley by Marion Zimmer Bradley - Fixed typo in author name “Bradley, Marian Zimmer” changed to “Bradley, Marion Zimmer.” Marc Kupper 18:39, 14 Nov 2006 (CST)

  • I had been maintaining redundant “Author” and “DAW Author” columns in my spreadsheet with the first being from my original DAW list and using a “Last, First (role); Last, First (role); …” format while the DAW Author column has the layout you see on isfdb. I added a function to convert the “Author” field into a DAW style author list and after comparing the results against the existing DAW Author field contents I made the following changes/corrections to the DAW Author field. After the fixes listed below I was able to remove the “DAW Author” column from my spreadsheet and now build the DAW style author-list string as part of the wikitext generator. Marc Kupper 23:14, 16 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • If there were three or more authors the original list used “Last, First, First Last & First Last.” The layout for three authors or more was changed to “Last, First & First Last & First Last.”
  • Sometimes if two authors shared the same last name the list would use “Anderson, Poul & Karen.” This was changed to “Anderson, Poul & Karen Anderson” to spell out each contributor’s name in full. This occurred most often with “Greenberg, Rosalind M. & Martin H. (eds)” which is now formatted as “Greenberg, Rosalind M. & Martin H. Greenberg (eds).”
  • “Cat, Ivan w/Darren Sarvari” was converted to “Cat, Ivan & Darren Sarvari”
  • “Roberson, Jennifer (ed.)” was converted to “Roberson, Jennifer (ed)”
  • “Greenberg, Martin H. & LarrySegriff (eds)” was corrected to “Greenberg, Martin H. & Larry Segriff (eds)”
  • “Bradley, Marion Zimmer” was corrected to “Bradley, Marion Zimmer (ed)” for UE2768, UE2843, UE2891, and UE2996 (the “Sword and Sorceress” anthologies)
  • “Lackey, Mercedes & L. Dixon” was corrected to “Lackey, Mercedes & Larry Dixon”
  • “Gorman, Greenberg, Helfers” was corrected to “Gorman, Ed & Martin H. Greenberg & John Helfers” for UE2894 - “Star Colonies”.
  • “McCarthy, Kevin with David Silva” was converted to “McCarthy, Kevin & David Silva” for UE2920 – “Special Effects.”
  • “Bradley & Deborah J. Ross” corrected to “Bradley, Marion Zimmer & Deborah J. Ross” for “The Fall of Neskaya.”
  • “Greenberg, Martin & L. Segriff” corrected to “Greenberg, Martin & Larry Segriff” for “Past Imperfect.”

  • Global search/replace ' for ’ (character #x27 (#39) for #x92 (#146)) Marc Kupper 03:17, 20 Nov 2006 (CST)
  • After the previous Global search/replace I decided to take a look at the isfdb data and decided to consistently go with character 39 ('). ISFDB has 359 titles (and no author names though searching for author ’ shows a minor bug) with character 146 (’) vs. 13,160 titles and 258 authors with character 39 ('). As a result, I did another global search/replace to go with character 39. Marc Kupper 03:37, 20 Nov 2006 (CST)

  • The following publications had two Logo #s assigned to them. Originally the list was in publication order which split the rows for these publications apart. For each of these I moved the rows for the second Logo # to be with the first so that all printings of a title are together and also left placeholders in the table explaining where to find the publication listings.
