Dating early Scribner's publications

Prior to 1929 the title page has the printing date. From 1929 to 1975 there's a code that looks like "H-6.59[V]" on the copyright page.

  • The first letter is the printing with A being the 1st, B is the second, C the third, etc. After the 26th printing (Z) they use a two letter code. Unfortunately, these are rare and so the pattern has not been decoded. An example of this would be "-BB-8.72(V)" on a copy of Manassas to Malvern Hill by Douglas Southall Freeman.
  • Following this is the publication date with the month, a period, and then a two digit year. Note that unlike the Doubleday gutter code this is a publication and not a printing or manufacturing date meaning it can be used as it. There have been publications that only state the year.
  • The letter at the end has not been decoded yet. Known codes are [AJ], [C], [col], [H], [J], [MC], [RJ], and [V]. (For a while I thought [V] was for the juvenile science fiction series but that's not the case. Marc Kupper)

Scribner's started using number lines in 1973 but the dust jacket often has the date.
