I spotted this publication on the Unknown author list and decided to try and figure out what it is.

  • It turns out the publisher, B & R Samizdat Express, is a one person operation owned by Richard_Seltzer that takes public domain material and repackages it for sale [1]. The editor of this anthology was not credited but it is believed that Richard Seltzer put this together entirely from material on Project Gutenberg and so he is credited as the editor.
  • It's not clear if any of the material in this anthology is speculative fiction. The only genre aspects may be the horror stories.
  • This is a Windows CD-ROM that has the stories as plain text files and includes a text to speech "reader" program.

As this publication is of works extracted from Project Gutenberg it gets reissued from time to time with additional stories. Amazon reports 140 stories, the publisher's order form says 261 stories, and the current table of contents, http://www.samizdat.com/detectivecd.html, has 290 books.

  • October 22, 2002 - First publication. While Amazon reports 140 stories it may be 163 stories.
  • November 14, 2004 -- updated Detective/Mystery/Crime/Horror, added 98 books for a total of 261.
  • April 15, 2005 -- update to Detective/Mystery/Crime/Horror, added 29 books for a total of 290.
