When entering a magazine or fanzine containing a serialized work of fiction, enter the serialization in the standard format, e.g. "The Courts of Chaos (Part 1 of 3)" or "The People of the Golden Atom (Complete Novel)".
Once your submission has been approved, check to see if this work has been reprinted as a NOVEL or as SHORTFICTION. If it has, make each of the newly created SERIAL title records into variants of the existing NOVEL or SHORTFICTION title record. Use the top half of the "Make This Title a Variant Title or Pseudonymous Work" Web page and follow the instructions given here. Note that serialized works are often given a different title when they appear in book form, so additional research may be required.
If the serialized work has not been reprinted in book form, use the bottom half of the "Make This Title a Variant Title or Pseudonymous Work" Web page to create a new parent title for the SERIAL title. A novel-length serialized work should be varianted to a NOVEL type record while a less-than-novel-length serialized work should be varianted to a SHORTFICTION type record. Use the year of the final serialization installment as the date of the newly created parent title. If the SERIAL title appeared under a pseudonym, make sure that the newly created parent title uses the canonical form of the author's name and not the pseudonym.
Note that if the serialized work appears as multiple SERIAL titles, they will all need to be varianted to the same parent title. If the parent NOVEL/SHORTFICTION title doesn't exist yet and you are creating a new one, create one "Make Variant" submission first, wait for it to be approved and then turn the rest of the related SERIAL titles into variants of the newly created NOVEL/SHORTFICTION title.
