According to AustLit, Val Heslop is: "Valentine V. Heslop; Born: 1894, Wentworth, New South Wales; Gender: Unknown"

In the Brisbane Courier for 1909-03-15, p. 5, we read that Valentine V. Heslop has received a free scholarship to Brisbane Technical College in Art, a scholarship which is awarded to students "not less than 15 years" (Valentine would have been 15 if he had been born before March of 1894), and that he was attending "Boys' Central" at that time, verifying his gender.

The "New South Wales, Australia, Index to Deceased Estate Files, 1859-1958" tells us that a Valentine Voltaire Heslop died in New South Wales, Australia in 1946. Similarly, the "Australia Cemetery Index, 1808-2007" gives us that same date and location. (These links through ancestry.com.)

From the States Record Authority in New South Wales we find divorce papers for Rhoda Thelma Janet Heslop and Valentine Voltaire Heslop filed on May 23, 1935.

From ancestry.com we find a Valentine Voltaire Heslop who was born 1887-12-11 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia to Henry Patterson Heslop and Sarah Jane (Richards) Heslop. The natural assumption is that Henry and Sarah had a son born in 1887 who died young and, as often happened back then, they re-used the name for a later son.
