Born on August 10, 1938, in London, England, he graduated from Liverpool College of Art in 1960. He has been a graphic designer, art director, lecturer at Manchester Polytechnic, Manchester, England, and is now a full-time writer and illustrator.

He was awarded the Children's Choice selection, International Reading Association/Children's Book Center, and Best Children's Picture Book of the Year from Redbook, both in 1985, for I'm Coming to Get You!. He received a Kate Greenaway Medal commendation, in 1986, for I Want My Potty.
