Tani has stated that she is from "just Northeast of the Ukraine in a town called Astrakhan", and refers to Astrakhan as the home place of Lenin. But Astrakhan is directly east, or slightly southeast, of the Ukraine, and isn't very close to the accepted birth place of Lenin. The birth place of Lenin is Ulyanovsk, which is Northeast of the Ukraine. So her birth city is unclear, but is certainly in Russia proper. Since her age is unknown, whether she was born in the Soviet Union or in Russia is also unclear, but we list it here as Russia.
Tani has also stated (in 2001) that she did not take her husband's Philip Marsh's) last name (when she married him, so that her legal name is just "Tani Jantsang", but since she was listed as "T. Marsh" on the only genre book she published, we list her name as Tani Jantsang-Marsh. She has published other non-genre books and articles under Tani Jantsang.
The last name comes from her mother, and she ascribes that name on her birth certificate as due to an accident.
Tani Jantsang is best known for her activism in the Church of Satan. She is one of the authors anthologized in Contemporary Religious Satanism: A Critical Anthology, which WorldCat summarizes as "This book brings together a group of international scholars to present a study of religious Satanism." She has been accused of having invented her name and her background, but the evidence for that seems fairly weak. (Although that might explain the confusion about the location of her birth city.)
