Jessica Amanda Salmonson, in Fantasy Macabre #5, says of this author: "M. Jesse Hoare wrote for Ireland's Holly Bough, which is the Christmas annual of the Cork Examiner, where "The Malignant Stone" was first published in 1980. The Examiner's Christmas number is quite an old fashioned thing, following the Dickensian tradition of featuring numbers of ghost stories--stories rarely seen by anyone outside of Cork County. Ghost story researcher D.G. Rowlands brought the tale to my attention, and obtained permission to reprint it from its original newspaper appearance. An effort to find out more about the author met with little success, the paper's editor having failed to file her married name. As Mr. Rowlands informs, "A letter to her address was returned by the Postal Authorities bearing the pencilled inscription 'Dead' -- how chilling and final that sounds."
