Jesse Herman Brewer III was born on 06 Jan 1946 in Orlando, Florida to Patricia Claire Brewer (nee Henderson) of Winter Haven, FL and Jesse Herman Brewer, Jr. of Slaton, TX. He spent his childhood in Texas, Florida and Nebraska. From 1959-1963 he attended Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, MI. From there he went to Trinity College in Hartford, CT, where he majored in Physics and minored in Creative Writing. After graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor's degree he attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he obtained an MA in 1969 and a PhD in High Energy Physics in 1972. He then went to work at the TRIUMF accelerator laboratory in Vancouver, BC, Canada, where he helped develop new experimental techniques using muons as probes of solids (see µSR) and became a professor at the University of British Columbia, where he worked for 34 years, retiring in 2011, ostensibly to write science fiction.
