John P. Boyd has been a professor of atmospheric, oceanic and space science at the University of Michigan since 1977. He earned a Ph. D. in applied physics (atmospheric dynamics) from Harvard. He usually publishes under the byline J. P. Boyd to avoid confusion with Boyd Upchurch, who published many novels in the 60s and 70s under the byline "John Boyd".
