According to an ad in the Life of Rear-Admiral John Paul Jones, by John Paul Jones, p. 406, this "R. W. Criswell" is also the author of "The New Shakespeare", and is "of the Cincinnati Enquirer".
According to testimony in Congressional serial set, Issue 2365, he was an editorial writer at the Cincinnati Enquirer until June, 1886.
According to The History of My Life, by Samuel Young, Criswell's "spicy writings had added greatly to the reputation of the paper in all respects--literary, local and general."
According to Sketches in crude oil, by John James McLaurin, before this he was appointed the editor at the Oil City "Derrick" until 1877, moving from there to the Cincinnati Enquirer. This book gives many details of his life, including that his first name was "Robert".
