As her Wikipedia page indicates, the author was born Eileen Mary Challans. It gives no indication that she ever legally changed her name to "Mary Renault", and she never married. The Dictionary of National Biography. Supplement, 1980-1989 lists her as "Challans, (Eileen) Mary", and the archives of St. Hugh's College say: "As a result of letters in the archive written to her contemporaries, Kathleen Abbott and Phyllis Hartnoll, by Mary Renault (Eileen Mary Challans), the College now possesses the notes, tapes and working papers which formed the basis of the biographies of Mary Renault by David Sweetman and Caroline Zilboorg." This would indicate that Eileen Mary Challans remains her legal name. (Although we invite someone to check the biographies indicated above for validation.)
