The Tomb

This is a mini-project related improving the indexing of The Tomb in ISFDB. It was triggered by the following note in publication record THTMBVPGDH1998 for The Tomb.

  • OCLC: 244831110. "'Author's definitive ed.'-- P.1 of cover 'TOR fiction.'" 2004, © 2006. This edition may be a rewrite to better sequence "The Adversary Cycle".

The note has been deleted from that publication record as the OCLC record seems to be referring to a different publication.

The author's FAQ for The Tomb has a section for the question "Why are there three different versions of The Tomb?" It's worthwhile to read that before continuing on.

This revised text has resulted in some confusion and possible data error among people and sites attempting to catalog this title. Per what's on the author's FAQ we should be seeing editions with a 1984 copyright and a 1998 copyright. We should also be seeing a variant title, Rakoshi, of the 1998 revision.

At present ISFDB has one title record, 3345, for The Tomb. It appears we should have The Tomb (1984 edition) and The Tomb (1998 edition) with a new title record for Rakoshi being a variant title of the 1998 edition. I'm not doing these changes now as it's not clear which publications are the 1998 edition. --Marc Kupper|talk 18:56, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

The following is copied from User talk:Dragoondelight#The Tomb. Check LOCUS 2006 The Tomb, ISBN 0-765-35513-2, which states "The Tomb (Tor 0-765-35513-2, Aug 2006, $4.99, 425pp, pb) [Repairman Jack] Reissue (Whispers Press/Berkley 1984) horror novel, the first in the Repairman Jack series. This is the revised “Author’s Definitive Edition” (Borderlands Press 2004) with a special price and a mail-in rebate offer." (note is from Dragoondelight 20:07, 28 July 2010 (UTC))

I did the following:

  • Renamed the title record for The Tomb to The Tomb (1984 edition).
  • Unmerged publication THTMBDVRSR2006 which is for ISBN 0-765-35513-2.
  • Renamed THTMBDVRSR2006 to The Tomb: Author's Definitive Edition. It's not clear if that's stated on the title page but will help separate this from listings for The Tomb.
  • Renamed the new title record for The Tomb to The Tomb (1998 edition).
  • Made The Tomb (1998 edition) a variant title of a new title, Rakoshi.
  • Added the two publications for Rakoshi. --Marc Kupper|talk 00:37, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Tor August 2006 edition

The copyright page for the Tor 2006 edition states

Copyright © 1984, 2004 by F. Paul Wilson
This revised edition was previously published in 2004 by Borderlands Press.

This prompted me to look at the author's FAQ again plus the Borderlands Press page about this story. I decided to rename The Tomb (1998 edition) to The Tomb (2004 edition) and separated out the 1998 Tor printing into The Tomb (1998 edition). Thus there are three titles

We still need to compare the text between the 1998 and 2004 editions to see if it has changed. Borderlands Press implies a third revision in 2004 with "the text has been extensively edited and updated by the author to make this the definitive edition". Tor's August 2006 printing seems to confirm this as its copyright page states "Copyright © 1984, 2004 by F. Paul Wilson" and "This revised edition was previously published in 2004 by Borderlands Press". However, the author's FAQ says "Borderlands Press released a limited edition of the revised version of THE TOMB under the authors preferred title: RAKOSHI." --Marc Kupper|talk 03:36, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Text compared - 1998 vs. 2004

I compared the first six pages of the text from the Tor August 1998 edition against the Tor August 2006 edition. The first has a 1984 copyright and the latter a 2004 copyright. Differences include

  • Replace references to VCRs and their tape cassettes with DVD players and discs.
  • Replace references to the "answerphone" with "answering machine."
  • Replaced a reference to using a phone booth with using a "Tracfone."
  • There are many wording tweaks and corrections to typos. For example:
    • 1998: A glance out the window revealed the usual vista of sandy shore, still blue ocean, and supine sunbathers.
    • 2004: A glance out the window revealed the usual vista of sandy shore, calm blue ocean, and supine sunbathers.

There's no evidence of any changes to the basic plot. Google Books has the third printing of the Tor/Forge 1998 edition which could be used in a future comparison.

The author's FAQ mentions the story was revised in 1998 and that the Tor/Forge 1998 publication contains this revision. If that's the case then someone forgot to change the copyright and the story is still very much set in 1984. Some forum threads exist that indicate the text was revised in 1998.
