アメリカの探検家ジョセフ・ウィルトンが友人のフランクと共にアフリカやボルネオ、マレー半島へと出かけ、現地で猛獣狩りをするという話である。
本作が凄いのは、本当にそれだけの話でしかないということで、冒険へ出かける前のエピソードとか後日談、サイドストーリーの類は一切抜き。大げさに言っているわけではなく、主人公と猛獣との戦いが延々描かれるという展開なのだ。発表媒体が少年誌であり、毎号、猛獣との戦いを描く必要があったのだろうが、それをまとめて読むのははさすがに辛く、正直百ページもいかないうちに飽きてしまった。
