Synopsis: From the front flap of the Gnome first edition: ""These are tales which might occur on the thirty-first of February"
A man who can walk through mirrors, a ghost who is afraid of mortals, a visitor from a generation not yet born, an author who has an enchanted pencil, a captured denizen of the fourth dimension - such diverse and intriguing characters as these will be found in
"The Thirty-First of February"
In this book the creator of the now famous Mr. Mergenthwirker's Lobblies once again take us to that outre land of which he is so uniquely competent a chronicler. Nelson Bond's talent curiously eludes the pigeonholes of pat classification. In this new collection of short and long stories neither tone nor treatment of any two of the stories is alike. They are kindred only in that all are fantasies, delicately handled by a craftsman, in which we may escape the gray monotony of commonplace geography and time.
The title, therefore is apt - having been suggested by James Branch Cabell. In the prefacing octave Cabell conveys to his fellow Virginian the privilege of using that title which the reknowned author of Jurgen at one time had intended for use in his own Biography of Manuel.
These stories, then, are of the sort which might also have been written on the thirty-first of February. But they are stories which merit reading and re-reading no matter what the calendar date."
