Note: Achim Schnurrer points in his 2021 essay to the fact that the novel was initially written by Gisela von Arnim, and that Bettina von Arnim only did some minor revisions and betterments. The text was already written sometime in the years 1840-1844. It was presented by Gisela - likely in 1844 - in a literary circle; a publication was planned for 1845 but wasn't realized for unknown reasons. The first publication in 1926 turned out to be incomplete: further pages of the manuscript were found years later.
