- The author's Preface notes (first paragraph in full): "The subject matter contained in this book was suggested by a short story appearing in the Cosmopolitan of March, 1903, entitled: 'The Breed of the West', by J. N. Marchand. The whole of that story, with a few embellishments, is embodied within the first ten pages, and I hereby acknowledge my indebtedness for the privilege, as well as the personal good wishes of the author thereof." In fact, Marchand was not the author of that story. "Breed of the West" by Charles Tenney Jackson (1874-1955) was published March 1903 in The Cosmopolitan 34.5 p. 523-29, with one headpiece and one full-page illustration by J. N. Marchand.
