Title: The House on Stilts Title Record # 1999637
Author: R. H. Hazard
Date: 1910-00-00
Type: NOVEL
Language: English
Note: Originally published in serial in People's Ideal Fiction Magazine Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug 1910.
Synopsis: San Francisco Call, Sept. 25, 1910: "It is crowded to suffocation with incidents none of which has a mark of probability. A shipwreck starts things and leaves the character of this tale on a volcanic isle, Gabrielle. The daughter of the American consul there, Norelle Pierson, is the heroine and proves to be a most self-possessed young person. A defaulting bank president, chased by a detective, is the cause of the trouble, and in the exciting adventures which follow we encounter enough characters to people a bushel of cheap melodramas. Dumb monks, a yellow queen, voodoos, a "dogman," Spaniards, crowd the page with no regard to geography or history. So evident are the impossibilities of the tale that it overreaches itself and makes the reader laugh instead of stirring his blood with excitement. The tale is not badly written, and if another time the author is not so generous with his ideas the story will prove more convincing and entertaining. The illustrations by J. A. Lemon are poor and unnecessary."
