Note: This story was first published in November 1916 in the Tokyo Imperial University student magazine 新思潮, Shin shichō, "New trend of thought". The original Japanese title of this story, 煙草と悪魔, is transcribed as Tabako to akuma in the Revised Hepburn notation, and means literally "Tobacco and the Devil". It is composed of 煙草, tabako, "tobacco", と, to, "and", and 悪魔, akuma, "devil, demon, Satan".
