Synopsis: Adelaide is the daughter of a famous eugenicist, who argues that people should treat their young like cats do: discarding any kitten that is not fit enough. And as a mother, Adelaide continues that attitude towards one of the two daughters in the story: treating Mary like a servant, beating her, and eventually killing her. The full relationship between Adelaide, her cook, the two daughters, and Adelaide's two husbands is revealed in layers. Some evil, malevolent people, but non-genre.
