- Chapter I: Found in the Attic Mother finishes reading the two Alice books to Betsy and Billy for "the fifth or sixth time" and tells them again that there isn't another. ... In a dream Betsy explores a chest of clothes in the attic: "the dresses and coats as she handled them became smaller and stiffer", finally a pile of "Wish There Were More" books including a third Alice book --a find that is featured in one b/w illustration (p13). Chapter II (Really Chapter I of the book Betsy found in the attic, in her dream) ...
- The last page of the novel (p. 157 viewed at HathiTrust) itself is reflexive. It shows the running chapter header; some text; a drawing of Alice; more text closing "And that was the end of the story in the book that Betsy found in the attic."; and a drawing of an open book whose right-hand page shows the same five elements.
