  • Publication: The Wine-Ghosts of BremenPublication Record # 764696
  • Author: Wilhelm Hauff
  • Date: 1889-01-00
  • Publisher: Basil Blackwell
  • Price:
3/-?Prior to decimilisation (1968-1971), UK books were priced in shillings, or shillings and pence, where 20 shillings equals one pound and 12 old pence equals one shilling. Shillings were indicated with a variety of suffixes, e.g. 3s, 3', 3", 3/ all mean 3 shillings. Any number after that is additional pence, usually 6 (half a shilling) but sometimes 3 or 9 (a quarter of a shilling or three-quarters of a shilling).
  • Pages: xxiv+64
  • Format:
hc?Hardcover. Used for all hardbacks of any size.
  • Type: CHAPBOOK
  • Notes:
      Translated by E. Sadler and C. R. L. Fletcher
    • 1st ed.
    • The 1889 limited ed. from White and Allen of New York and London (see at ISFDB, viewed at HathiTrust) may be simultaneous. Probably that is a later US edition. British Library (BL, below) reports page count identical to the White and Allen ed., so the Preface by co-translator Fletcher is listed here. This edition may also contain the illustrations by Gregory (4), but they are not listed here, given the silence of the library records and three contemporary notices that include one review.
    • The title is not found 2020-03-11 in automated search ("wine ghosts of bremen") of 1888 newspapers, with three January 1889 hits: • The Spectator -01-12 p60, "Publications of the Week", listing as "cr 8vo   (Blackwell) 3/0" • The Athenaeum -01-12 p50, "List of New Books", listing as "translated by [ES and CRLF], 12mo, 3/ cl." (no publisher) • The Scotsman -01-28 p2-3, "New Books", review 14 of 17 names the translators and publisher (no price) Our interpretation is that The Athenaeum reports the same publication, despite the difference in reported size (8vo, 12mo). The Athenaeum -04-20 p505 lists this title as "on our table" (ie, Books Received), as same translators and "(Simpkin)". No other 1889 notice of a Blackwell or Simpkin, Marshall edition is found in the search described above, nor any advertisement by any publisher, and the earliest notice of the White and Allen edition is September (US).
