    • 1st ed. Published for the 1864 Christmas gift season, as 1865. Distinguished by its black-and-white plates and dark blue cover.
    • Publication date and price from "Routledge, Warne & Routledge's List of New Books", The Athenaeum #1928 (1864-10-08) p474, as "In cloth gilt, price 5s." That is the earliest notice of the work published as a book, found 2019-03-08 in automated search of 1864 newspapers and magazines. The same listing is last found -11-12, thereafter "5s.; or with Coloured Plates, 7s. 6d." (earliest found -11-19, in "[RWR]'s List of Gift-Books"). The collection of advertisements found in the weekly Athenaeum implies October and November publications.
    • Google Books provides full text and images of one copy with dark blue cover, as displayed here. Bennett is credited as Charles Bennett on the cover. Title page: -- (quote) related and illustrated by C. H. Bennett, in twelve "stories." -- 1865
    • Human figures of the front cover decoration are two from the illustration for "Story the Sixth: Of Wagers", reproduced as a plate facing page 47.
    • WorldCat library records (OCLC, below) report the 2nd ed. (red cover) and note this one, "Issued also with uncolored ill."
    • The only British Library record (BL, below) reports "1865 [1864]" --published during 1864 with 1865 date-- without detail that would identify the edition.
