    A 12/6?Prior to decimilisation (1968-1971), UK books were priced in shillings, or shillings and pence, where 20 shillings equals one pound and 12 old pence equals one shilling. Shillings were indicated with a variety of suffixes, e.g. 3s, 3', 3", 3/ all mean 3 shillings. Any number after that is additional pence, usually 6 (half a shilling) but sometimes 3 or 9 (a quarter of a shilling or three-quarters of a shilling).

    • Third printing of the original 1952 edn. (2nd printing was 1953.) Either for the 2nd printing, or this one, the text has been reset & a couple of the smaller illustrations have been removed. (At least one of the removed illustrations is repeated elsewhere in the book). As a result, this printing/edition is 4 pages shorter cf the 1952 first printing. (Worldcat implies it was this printing that was reset, because the Worldcat record for the 1953 printing has "233 pages".)

    • Cover artist not noted, but the signature looks like "Whittam". (There is a G. Whittam in ISFDB - working this era.)
