Note:
Nicholas and his guide Ann Caraway tour New York City and its region in the first book, and return there in the second after touring France and England. They meet fictional characters and creatures, children (mainly at libraries), and important creators of children's books.
The protagonist is "a magical boy named Nicholas", "Nicholas, the little Dutch boy", and "eight-inch tall Nicholas from Holland", in the words of library catalogs and Wikipedia.
According to one newspaper review of the sequel: "Nicholas is a doll in name only; he runs and leaps, laughs and writes letters; he is, in short, the spirit of the Children's Room of the New York Public Library, a young spirit of joy in life and delight in books." --May Lamberton Becker, NY Herald Tribune 1932-09-25 p19
