  • Note: This is a collection of nearly five hundred tales, mostly supernatural, written by Pu Songling (1640-1715) in classical Chinese during the early Qing Dynasty, and divided in twelve volumes. It is sometimes said to have been originally published in 1740, but the first known copy of this collection was printed in 1766. The original title is 聊齋誌異, transcribed in pinyin notation as Liáozhāi zhìyì (聊斋志异 in simplified Chinese characters). It would probably translate best as "strange tales from a chatterbox's studio", but is generally rendered as "Strange Tales (or Stories) from a Chinese Studio".
