Synopsis: Slingshot follows the lives of the men and women who build the largest machine in human history – the world's first space launch loop. The action ranges from Seattle's world financial district, to the streets of Manhattan, to the fortified warrens of the North Korean government, to the ocean bottom at 5,000 meters off Baker Island, to the edge of space 80 km above. Alaska bush pilots, Mohawk high-iron men, Gullah-Geechee oil rig divers, Navy Seals, and a host of others, work with MIT and Stanford trained engineers to build this 2,000 km long machine. Most of the action takes place along the equator between Howland, Baker, and Jarvis Islands in the Equatorial Pacific. Howland Island was Amelia Earhart's destination when she disappeared on July 2, 1937. She plays a significant part in Slingshot as the role model for Margo Jackson, who runs the underwater elements of the project. Alex Regent, who heads the project, and Klaus Blmenfeld, in charge of constructing the project's massive OTEC power plants, complete the engineering team making the launch loop happen. Tough-minded CEO Mabel Fitzwinters pulls the strings from her headquarters atop Seattle's historic Smith Tower. A group of misguided young environmentalists, unwittingly manipulated out of Pyongyang, opposes construction of the space launch loop, employing sabotage to reach their goal. The men and women building the launch loop are real people who work and play and fight and love as they create something the world has never before seen. They push the boundaries of engineering, they overcome Nature's power and destructiveness, and they defeat human ignorance and greed to create a doorway into space for the common person.
