George Tomkyns Chesney vs. G. T. Chesney

Re: the proposed merge of "George Tomkyns Chesney" and "G. T. Chesney", I have checked Contento and it would appear that "The Battle of Dorking" has been published under both bylines. If so, then we will presumably want to make one record a pseudonym of the other as per Help:How to record a pseudonym. Would that work for you? Thanks! Ahasuerus 00:01, 2 Jun 2007 (CDT)

Just an FYI that I created a pseudonym association for the two versions of Chesney's name a while back :) Ahasuerus 18:13, 24 Jun 2007 (CDT)

Donald R. Bensen/Donald R. Benson/Donald Bensen

OK, we're down to two of them now, but the pub edit you submitted shows the cover as "Donald R. Bensen" yet you want "Donald Bensen" as the author - is this correct, and we need to make another variant name still? BLongley 08:05, 16 Jun 2007 (CDT)

It's Donald R. Bensen on the cover, and D.R. Bensen on the copyright page.

What's on the title page? Generally for publications like this I document in the notes all of the variants and their location in the publication. I'll list how the author name is spelled on the front cover, spine, title page, copyright page, and elsewhere. We enter what's on the title page in the "Author" field but I like to document the other names so that people will understand why this publication may be listed under other names on various web sites. Fortunately, these are rare otherwise a bibliographer's job turns into a real PITA. Marc Kupper (talk) 23:43, 18 Jun 2007 (CDT)

On the title page itself? DONALD R. BENSEN --MA Lloyd 18:07, 24 Jun 2007 (CDT)

Thanks, fixed now. BLongley 12:49, 25 Jun 2007 (CDT)

Jurassic Park

You want to update publication 164381 and to change

  • Year from 1999-00-00 to 1991-12-00
  • Price from $7.99 to $5.99
  • Note from "18th printing." to (blank)

I'm not sure why the existing publication record is not marked as "verified" but I believe it's accurate and should not be overwritten. If you have a copy of an earlier printing that is $5.99 then you should clone the existing record rather than overwriting data and to edit the clone. Since 1980 it's been common for publishers to keep the same ISBN as they reprint at a higher price meaning we will have multiple records in ISFDB for the same ISBN.

For example, Amazon.com 0345370775 has a Look Inside that shows a 24th printing for $7.99 and using this I cloned the publication you wanted to update and created 200157.

In general the rule is we should not need to overwrite information that's already in ISFDB though we often add data. For example, a publication my be stated in ISFDB as 1991-00-00 and your copy is 1991-12-00 in which case it's ok to "fill in the blanks." The only time I overwrite is if I can prove that the existing data is flat out wrong. Even in that case I often leave a publication note explaining what I overwrote and why so that if someone else comes along with the original source that created the incorrect data they can either chose the clone the record or update the notes.

One area that generally is safe to just overwrite is the page count as the count noted on Amazon is nearly always wrong (sometimes by hundreds of pages but usually about 10 pages too high as publishers count all of the pages including the unnumbered stuff that's before the story. Marc Kupper (talk) 23:11, 18 Jun 2007 (CDT)

Is this a uniform policy? Avoiding overwrites by adding new publications with small differences in data seems to be getting a handful of rejections on the grounds the entry is already in the database.--MA Lloyd 10:13, 25 Jun 2007 (CDT)

The goal is one publication record per printing of the book though at the moment ISFDB does not have a printing number meaning the printing # is kept in the notes field for now. The project is complicated by the fact that editors generally will not have physical access to all editions meaning they will need to make "best judgment" calls on if an ISFDB record matches their publication or if they should add a new record. The rules I listed above are to help make this "best judgment" call. There are times when you can determine with a fair degree of confidence that something in ISFDB is wrong (or is a duplicate record) and should be deleted or overwritten. Sometimes I can't prove it's wrong as it's hard to find evidence of absence, particularly on the Internet where data gets copied from one site to the next. Again it's a judgment call and I've often added bibliographic notes explaining the research I did and the results (or lack of) trying to pin something down.
One thing I want to avoid would be “edit wars” where for example, one person enters a publication with a price of $7.99, and another has a $5.99 copy of the same publication, and figures whoever first entered the record is wrong and overwrites it. The verification system helps with this but often records are entered but not verified as the data is from a secondary, though presumed reliable, source.
You had written “…getting a handful of rejections on the grounds the entry is already in the database…” That’s not a problem – when I see a cloned pub I just check that it’s syntactically correct (formatting of the yyyy-mm-dd, currency symbol in front of the price, etc.) and either approve or approve/edit to correct any syntax errors. When editors update publications, as you did with Jurassic Park, I will hold them and research if significant fields are getting changed. Filling in the blanks is ok – changing fields other than the page count results in the publication getting held so I can understand if in fact the original data was wrong and should be overwritten. Marc Kupper (talk) 23:09, 25 Jun 2007 (CDT)
I wanted to clear this off the submission queue and so went ahead rejecting the original submission and in its place cloning the original publication record to create JRSSCPRKVH1991 which has the data you wanted to edit into the original record. Marc Kupper (talk) 22:56, 2 Jul 2007 (CDT)

John M. Ford's The Dragon Waiting

You wished to changed the publication date of this pub from March 1985 to April 1985. Can you verify this with the actual publication? Locus gives the March date. Thanks. Mhhutchins 13:38, 23 Jun 2007 (CDT)

The title verso has "First Avon Printing, April, 1985" Not that there is anything unusual about a disagreement of a couple months between publishers printing and release dates and reality. --MA Lloyd 18:04, 24 Jun 2007 (CDT)
Thanks for responding. I've approve the edit. Mhhutchins 18:16, 24 Jun 2007 (CDT)

Lynn Abbey > Lynn Asprin

I don't believe that Lynn Abbey ever used the Lynn Asprin name, even though she was married to Robert [Lynn] Asprin at the time. An internet search came up empty. If you come across a pub, please don't hesitate to let me know. I can't imagine a book by Robert Lynn Asprin and Lynn Asprin. :-) Mhhutchins 12:00, 24 Jun 2007 (CDT)

I wouldn't think so either, but I can't be certain I have the source publication, and I'm not quite sure how to mark entries for deletion anyway. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by MA Lloyd (talkcontribs) .
There are "Delete This Pub" and "Delete This Title" options in the navigation bar on the left on the Publication and Title pages respectively. You can submit a Publication deletion at any time if you are sure that it's bogus or a duplicate of another publication in the ISFDB. However, if you want to submit a Title deletion request, it will only go through if all associated Publications have been deleted first. Ahasuerus 06:30, 25 Jun 2007 (CDT)

Date format

Just a quick reminder that the ISFDB doesn't understand the YYYY format. Only YYYY-MM-DD dates, e.g. 1891-00-00 in Haggard's case, will work. Thanks! Ahasuerus 06:26, 25 Jun 2007 (CDT)

Arbor House Treasury of Modern SF & Arbor House Treasury of Modern SF

I'm sorry, but I meant to comment before I rejected you making a variant of theese two titles. The reason that I rejected it, is that the newer book should be listed as a variant of the older book, and you had them the other way around. I have fixed this, and they should now be ok. CoachPaul 13:35, 10 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Sorry, you did it correctly, it's the software that shows it wrong, because when I entered it, I got the same results as when you did it. Then when I approved the edit, it turned out like it should have. CoachPaul 13:39, 10 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Space Cadet

I have approved the changes to the 1987 edition of Space Cadet, but I was wondering about the cover and the price. The cover has an "SBN" as opposed to an ISBN, which suggests that it was printed back in the early-to-mid 1970s. The price, $5.99, is rather high for a 1987 mass market paperback. Could you please double check them? What does the number line say about the printing number? Thanks! Ahasuerus 12:12, 17 Jul 2007 (CDT)

The Iron Lords

This is the ISBN for the 1983 Ace ed. Search on Abebooks confirmed this. In this case the date and author need updating. I will make the needed changes and merge the titles.Kraang 23:21, 30 Jul 2007 (CDT)

Unknowns

Thanks for updating the unknowns, but is there any chance you can do a bit more with each edit than just update the author? I agree that the records with reasonable ISBNs should probably be kept for a bit till we figure out why he had them here (the "999" prefix pubs can probably be zapped instantly instead), but looking at a few of your examples it seems clear that you could be updating "tp" format to "pb" with a couple of clicks more research, for instance. Maybe even find the coverart. I'm not sure if you're working with known other publications or just recognising titles? BLongley 14:14, 7 Aug 2007 (CDT)
Of course, if you just want to increase your total contributions score by doing it in multiple passes, that's fine, it just makes more work for the moderators. And it can be easier to check whether a pub is a duplicate AFTER sorting it under the correct author - but most of your updates will still need a title merge or update before the possible duplicates end up under the same author and same title. BLongley 14:14, 7 Aug 2007 (CDT)
Anyway, thanks for editing - any improvement to data is still good, I just like to see MY workload minimised in the meantime! ;-) BLongley 14:14, 7 Aug 2007 (CDT)

I also appreciate your trying to clean up the "unknowns", but there are still several steps needed to make the pubs integral to the database. For example, here's one of the pubs for which you provided an author. First, the TITLE REFERENCE still refers to a title without an author. You may also notice that the ISBN doesn't match Tor. A quick look on The OCLC Fictionfinder website will reveal the following:

Spacepaw
Dickson, Gordon R. / Gordon R. Dickson.
Date: 1983, c1969.
Language: English
Description: 222 p. ;—18 cm.
Publisher: New York : Ace Science Fiction Books, 1983, c1969.
ISBN: 0441777597 (pbk.) :
OCLC: 09630715
So it wasn't a trade paperback published by Tor in 1988, but a mass-market paperback (18 cm) published by Ace in 1983. I personally feel that the time and extra steps required to clean up one pub is worth more to the database than cleaning up a lot of "unknowns". And I feel uncomfortable approving these updates knowing that the pubs are sitting in limbo, until someone else comes along and completes the job. If you intend to carry through on adding them to the database, please forgive my bringing the subject up. Mhhutchins 16:12, 7 Aug 2007 (CDT)

I'm not sure how agressive to be about these. Those I'm pretty confident contain no information at all not already in the existing records I've been trying to mark for deletion, but I'm reluctant to make changes when it looks like there could be information there that I'd be overwriting. After all unlikely as it seems there *could* be both an Ace and Tor edition of Spacepaw. And yeah I should merge the ones with changed authors, but I wasn't sure if the order of operations mattered or not. --MA Lloyd 21:43, 11 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Well, actually, both Ace and Tor have published editions of Spacepaw. The example I provided was to point out that the pub record that you updated was an amalgamation of two different publications. I'd rather that this pub sat in "unknown" limbo until it can be completely cleaned up than to have it merged with the title records on Dickson's summary page. Yes, it does take several steps to clean up these pubs, but whether you correct the title records or the publication records first doesn't matter. After those have been done you can then merge the title records with any pre-existing titles.
For those pubs that your research has shown to have duplicates already in the database, please feel free to continue deleting them. I'd bet that that alone would clean up at least half of the "unknowns" in the database. Thanks for your continuing efforts. Mhhutchins 22:10, 11 Aug 2007 (CDT)
Along the same lines, there are LOT of these that consist of nothing but a title, a malformed ISBN beginning with a string of 9s, a publisher, and the format tp. Many of these titles are recognizable, and when looked up exist in releases from the indicated publisher with about the same date, but in pb. Arguably these could be considered useful data, indicating a trade paper release exists that is not otherwise in the database, so I've been leaving them where there seemed any real chance such a release might exist. But my feeling is they're probably all errors and I'm thinking about marking them for deletion. Anybody have a strong opinion otherwise?--MA Lloyd 10:45, 13 Aug 2007 (CDT)
You already known my view on the subject, but I'd like to know what other moderators and editors think. These records were probably generated by a program that spidered the WWW looking for ISBNs. If I had anything to do with it, I'd stop the practice now. If anyone can try and convince me otherwise, I'm open to hearing their argument. Anyone? Mhhutchins 12:51, 13 Aug 2007 (CDT)
"Death to Dissembler", then? I'm not sure I'd go that far, but there's always room for improvement. I saw Al release another set of Dissembler submissions at the weekend, and got to look at a few before he approved them all: I didn't see any "999" ISBNs added (although I didn't get to see many in detail) but did notice that there were some un-regularised Authors. (I was a bit annoyed as I'd spent a couple of hours fixing some of those, hence my massive number of author updates and merges.) I'd like Al to leave a few Dissembler runs for us Mods to criticise properly, even if we have to talk to the bot for a bit... BLongley 13:30, 13 Aug 2007 (CDT)
I approved a few more of your submissions tonight - they're hard work checking though, so I'm not going to look at them all. Most were OK, but your "Probably no information" comment made me hesitate on some. For instance, I've held the deletion of this pub as we don't have a 1989 publication under here. Amazon indicates such a 1989 edition might exist? BLongley
OK, I'm definitely too tired to Mod, as I accidentally unheld the pub deletion and there's only the title left to do now. (Too many windows open - one for the submission queue, one for the title search, one for the good pubs, one for the bad one, one for Amazon, one here...) But the 1989 question remains, I hope. BLongley 15:24, 14 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Tim F. Lahaye / Tim LaHaye merge

I don't think we should merge these if books are being published under both names. I looked up "Tim F. Lahaye" and saw several books attributed to that name in the OCLC and Amazon. Perhaps we should make one name the canonical name and the other a pseudonym. Any other moderators want to join in the discussion? Frankly I couldn't care less about this author and his work, but we aren't supposed to make value judgements (if we're Good Christians.) Mhhutchins 20:22, 10 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Michael is quite right, if an individual has used more than one form of his or her name, e.g. "Robert A. Heinlein" and "Robert Heinlein", then we make the most frequently used form the "canonical name" and all other permutations are entered as pseudonyms. Ahasuerus 04:41, 11 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Andre Norton's Victory on Janus

You wanted to merge this record with this one. Which would be OK if the pub in the first title record was a good pub. But you state yourself that the ISBN is incorrect. You can also see that there's already a pub of this title in the database published by Ballantine in the same year, which can be verified by Locus. As I stated above, until these "unknown" pubs have been cleaned, it's doesn't help the database by merging them with existing titles. Of course, this may only be my personal preference, but I'm not aware if a standard policy in this matter has been established. Mhhutchins 22:49, 11 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Resurrection Day and Foucault's pendulum (and The Mezentian Gate)

I approved these two submissions, then went back and checked their prices. $7.50 and $6.95 appear to be a little high for 2000 and 1990, respectively. Are you sure the entered dates reflect the publication date of these printing as opposed to the date of the first printing? Thanks! Ahasuerus 19:43, 19 Jun 2007 (CDT)

P.S. I have E. R. Eddison's The Mezentian Gate on hold for the same reason since $2.25 appears to be too high for a 1969 paperback. Could you please double check? Thanks! Ahasuerus 19:55, 19 Jun 2007 (CDT)

P.P.S. Moving this section to the bottom of the page since it may have been missed back in June and the submission is still outstanding. Could you please take a look when you have a chance? Thanks! Ahasuerus 01:31, 19 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Since it's been 3 months since the original submission, I went ahead and did some additional research re: The Mezentian Gate. Based on online sources, it looks like the original Ballantine edition appeared in 1969 and the reprint that you submitted was published in 1978. I ended up massaging Eddison's bibliography and I hope it looks reasonable now. Please take a look when you have a chance. Thanks! Ahasuerus 22:59, 19 Sep 2007 (CDT)

The Best of C. L. Moore

I accepted your update of this pub, but had to change the the type from NONFICTION to ESSAY. NONFICTION refers to a book-length publication, while ESSAY is used for contents (smaller works). Mhhutchins 12:41, 22 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Apocalypse Array

I accepted your update of this title, but had to go back to correct the date field. Your submission was for the year only (2004), instead of 2004-00-00. When the month and day are not given the system defaults to 0000-00-00 (unknown). Thanks. Mhhutchins 12:45, 22 Aug 2007 (CDT)

And here you didn't have to enter "date unknown" in full, '0000-00-00' is the preferred option. You could put in something shorter like above and it will default to '0000-00-00', but then you'd confuse the approver. BLongley 13:34, 25 Sep 2007 (CDT)

Ship of Ishtar

I have approved your Ship of Ishtar submission, but could you please double check that the title is spelled Ship of Ishtar and not The Ship of Ishtar on the title page? If the article is indeed missing, then we will want to create a variant title relationship between the two Title records. Thanks! Ahasuerus 15:47, 22 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Robert L. Asprin

I agree that this variation needs sorting, but all the TITLES by "Robert L. Asprin" seem to be by "Robert Lynn Asprin". Maybe we should be sorting the rogue Titles out rather than creating another variant for something that's never actually been used? BLongley 17:03, 25 Sep 2007 (CDT)

All the ones I see on my shelves are either just Robert Asprin or Robert Lynn Asprin. Will dig out the buried ones. Dana Carson 20:43, 27 Sep 2007 (CDT)

Steven Bauer's Satyrday

You updated this pub with the note that it's illustrated by Ron Miller. Is he the cover artist or did he do interior illustrations or both? There are fields to indicate either (or both) other than the note field. Thanks. Mhhutchins 10:09, 26 Sep 2007 (CDT)

Interiorart

You keep putting comments like "Illustrated by Janet Aulisio" in notes. There's an "Interiorart" content type you can use for this, that makes sure people can SEARCH for work the artist has done. BLongley 13:53, 3 Oct 2007 (CDT)

Brian C. Daley/Brian Daley/Daley

OK, I approved the merges but as you can see now (hopefully), some publications are just duplicates and could just have been deleted: tidying up the authors a bit faster. Also, as Author-Merges are potentially one of the most destructive edits allowed, it's good to talk to some Mods first - I guess I've done as much checking as you did, but getting to talk a bit more does help. Some Notes to a Mod on a pub-deletion might have been faster all round. BLongley 14:45, 3 Oct 2007 (CDT)

The Queen of Zamba

What is the length of the story entitled "The Queen of Zamba"? It looks be be novel length and I wonder if it is the same as the previously published version of the same title. I am also wondering whether these two stories were combined for the previous version. I don't moderate books that often but I know it can be hard to determine whether patched together stories should be considered a single novel or a collection.--swfritter 14:20, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

This edition was the first to contain the author's preferred text of the novel previously published as Cosmic Manhunt and A Planet Named Krishna. In addition to the novel (with the same title as the 1949 serial in ASF) this edition includes the novelette "Perpetual Motion". The 1983 Ace edition is a reprint of this collection but its record currently doesn't reflect that. So to answer your question, the entry type of The Queen of Zamba should be NOVEL, and it should be merged with the current title (novel as well). Then there would be two separate titles with this name: the novel and the collection. You could reject MA Lloyd's current submission, and have him make another submission. Or accept it and make the corrections. Or I could do it, if you prefer. I hope my 2-cents doesn't come across as interference between you and the editor. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:50, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)
More like manna from heaven. I was going to put it out there on the verification page. I am going to try to moderate more books so any time I can get advice please feel free.--swfritter 16:13, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)
Fixed. Given the knowledge the only step I might have forgotten would be merging the novel. Thanks to Mr. Hutchins.--swfritter 16:26, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

Two Yards of Dragon

I approved these submissions but am wondering why you didn't merge all three at the same time? You can answer me on your page.--swfritter 14:29, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

Goblin Moon

I had to reject a submission to (hopefully) attract your attention. I'm afraid the links to the Wiki aren't always working at the moment: if no page comes up and "tamu.edu" is in the address, change the "tamu.edu" to "org" and it should work though. BLongley 14:56, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

I've adjusted this publication as your submission suggested though - note how the Interiorart entries should be entered, rather than a SHORTFICTION title of "Interior Art (Goblin Moon)". BLongley 14:56, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

ISBNs

I've accepted your changes but am going to edit this pub. We don't need TWO reference numbers in the same field, so "#02244 SBN 345-02244-0-095" is a bit over the top. It's fine to leave such in notes, explaining where each reference was used, but you can actually derive the proper full ISBN from such: the "-095" is the price, leaving you with "345-02244-0" : and until recently, just adding a "0" in front of a stated SBN (for English language publications) usually gets the correct one. You can Amazon search (Or AbeBooks, or Alibris, or any other good book-seller site) to check. Or even a tool a fellow editor here created - Marc's ISBN finder is pretty useful. More recent pubs may need a "1" in front instead (still for English language pubs) as they started running out of SBNs, and nowadays the 13-digit version is the norm (and we're not quite ready for that here yet, unfortunately) - but please do try and find the 10-digit ISBN when you can, it helps with the Links to Amazon or Powells or Books-A-Million for a start. BLongley 15:46, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

The second problem is again with your content entry: "Introduction by Lin Carter" in notes is informative, but you can enter it more usefully with an ESSAY type named "Introduction (Book Title)" and Author "Lin Carter". That makes it findable from Lin Carter's page: adding the title in brackets helps distinguish it from all the other Introductions he's done. BLongley 15:46, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

Sorry to sound so critical - I've approved a good number of good edits from you too, I just want to improve the remainder of your submissions a bit to make less work for the rest of the approvers. Thanks for editing! BLongley 15:46, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

The Complete Compleat Enchanter

Just to let you know that I have approved your The Complete Compleat Enchanter submission and then changed it from a Collection to an Omnibus as per the Help pages:

A publication may be classified is an omnibus if it contains multiple works that have previously been published independently, and at least one of them is a novel.

In this case, The Castle of Iron is a novel (expanded in 1950 from an eponymous 1940 novella), so the rule applies, although cases where there is only one novel included tend to be a gray area. The omnibus designation is slightly better when dealing with multiple entries belonging to the same series since you can then use "/1,2,3,4,5" to show the Omnibus contents on the Summary page -- see the current state of de Camp's bibliography. Thanks for editing! Ahasuerus 20:42, 10 Oct 2007 (CDT)

Serpent's Reach

I've added coverart and notes to your verfied pub, please feel free to check. BLongley 15:10, 11 Nov 2007 (CST)

Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said

I have some questions about your verified publication.

  • What's on the printing number line?
  • Is the cover art credit on the copyright page Hans Ulrich and Ute Osterwalder or Laurence Kresek?
  • Is it printed in the USA or Canada?

Sorry about the detailed questions - DAW printed this with three different covers in fairly rapid succession. TIA. Marc Kupper (talk) 04:36, 31 Jan 2008 (CST)

The Dragon Revenent

Your submission updating this pub record gave the cover artist's name as Keith Parkenson. There's an ISFDB record for Keith Parkinson, but not one with an "e". Can you double check the spelling of the name on the pub? Thanks. Mhhutchins 16:28, 5 Feb 2008 (CST)

Northanger Abbey

OK, please tell me how Jane Austen has suddenly become an SF author? BLongley 15:38, 6 Feb 2008 (CST)

I assume it is related to the review of Northanger Abbey in Horror: 100 Best Books? Ahasuerus 17:24, 6 Feb 2008 (CST)
I really can't bring myself to approving such an entry so feel free to take over. At best I'd let it in and then override it to non-genre status - I hate Jane Austen with a passion it would take far too long to explain. I'd rather not see her here at all, but the fact that her existence has caused me to fail to gain certain qualifications, and her writings seem to slander certain of my family members is MY problem, not anyone else's. BLongley 17:59, 6 Feb 2008 (CST)
Ouch! I doubt you are in a position to appreciate the finer points of the Jane Austin (sic) bibliography once compiled on rec.arts.sf.written then. I have approved the submission and cleaned up the pre-existing data. Ahasuerus 20:29, 6 Feb 2008 (CST)

The Enchanter Reborn and "Robert Chambers"

I have rejected the proposed Pseudonym creation for "Robert Chambers" since, upon investigation, it turned out that the only publication under that name was in error and should have been entered as by "Robert W. Chambers". I went ahead and corrected the publication, so the "Robert Chambers" Author record is now gone. Also, I approved the deletion of the less complete duplicate of The Enchanter Reborn, but first I copied the link to Amazon's image from the about-to-be-deleted record to the surviving one. Thanks! Ahasuerus 18:22, 6 Feb 2008 (CST)

Nine Hundred Grandmothers

I see that you have submitted the contents of the 1982 Ace edition of Lafferty's Nine Hundred Grandmothers. Since we already had a previous edition of this collection on file (even the page numbers were the same), there was no need to re-enter all that data -- you could have used the Clone option instead. That way the probability of data entry errors and typos is minimized and we don't have to merge the newly entered stories with the pre-existing ones. In fact, it was so easy to do that I went ahead and did it myself -- take a look at the resulting publication. If it looks OK, I will go ahead and reject your submission. Thanks! Ahasuerus 19:53, 6 Feb 2008 (CST)

Tales of Horror and the Supernatural: Volume 2

Just an FYI that I have approved your changes to the Pinnacle edition of Tales of Horror and the Supernatural: Volume 2, but then changed the catalog ID from "523-00282" to "#523-00282". If we don't use the pound sign for non-ISBN catalog IDs, the software assumes that it's an ISBN and will use it for lookup purposes at Amazon.com and other online bookstores. Thanks! Ahasuerus

Now you're possibly making it more confusing. '#' isn't a pound sign, '£' is. I usually call '#' a 'hash' symbol. Is there a name for it we all understand? Octothorpe? Or just remember it's not a universal name and keep using the symbol without naming it? BLongley 15:01, 9 Feb 2008 (CST)
Considering that Wikipedia has close to 20 different terms for this character, I doubt we will find a universally accepted one. I guess we'll just have to use the character itself ("#"), which we already do in Help. Ahasuerus 19:03, 9 Feb 2008 (CST)
OK, I'll go back to telling people that '£' works for prices now, and that '#' works for making Catalog(ue) numbers immune to warnings about bad numbers. (I wish Al would comment on the Bad ISBN discussion - the "links should work!" argument seems so RIGHT to me on both a database and web basis that I can't understand why there's so much dithering!) BLongley 19:29, 9 Feb 2008 (CST)
I doubt that Al has the time to follow the Wiki aside from checking his Talk page every day or two. Perhaps summarizing the arguments in a few sentences and posting them on Al's Talk page would elicit a response? Ahasuerus 20:03, 9 Feb 2008 (CST)

Jirel of Joiry

I have added a cover image, page numbers, and a couple of notes to your verified pub, which i also own a copy of. Or more accurately I have submited these changes, they have not yet been approved. When they are, would you take a look snd see that they match your copy, as i belive they will. -DES Talk 11:44, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Wasteland of Flint

I checked my copy against yours and found the (s) was missing from 'House of Reed(s)(excerpt). I will transient verify after acceptance of submission. Thanks, Harry. --Dragoondelight 15:00, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

City by Simak

You submitted a new publication of City. But you linked to the title record for "City" the first shortfiction work that went into the longer work, rather than to the title record for City, the collection or fixup.

As to its being a fixup, my memory is that the separate sections retained their titles, so i would be inclined to call it a collection, as our existing records do. In any case it is not an anthology, having only one author.

Also, your submission looks like a near duplicate of either this record, except that the record has tp while you have pb for binding type, or of this record except that the ISBN is different by one digit. ISBNdb.com and amazon.com list both as mass-market pb editions, one from 1981 and one from 1983. My thought is to use your data to update one of these, probably this record. However, i await your response. I have the submission on hold.

Note that we can now use the "import" feature to copy the content listings from another edition, saving some work in entry. -DES Talk 16:52, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

I rejected the submission as it seems to be a duplicate of this though I did copy your publication note to the title record. --Marc Kupper|talk 06:55, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
I just looked again - the date you submitted it a little after the one in Ahasuerus' copy though a puzzle is this publication is dated 1983, priced at $2.75 like yours, but is ISBN 0-441-10627-7 meaning we have conflicting dates for the same publication. --Marc Kupper|talk 07:01, 4 January 2009 (UTC)
Our data for the 1983 pub matches what OCLC has on file for that ISBN, so I have updated the record and import the contents of the 1981 printing, which is likely identical. Ahasuerus 23:55, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith

I rejected your submission adding a new publication of this title, because it was more efficient to clone the current pub as it had the contents (which I did, using the info from your submission). This saves time by not having to enter new contents and merging them with the pre-existing title records. Please check to see if the record I created matches the pub which you were adding to the database. Thanks. MHHutchins 21:43, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Alfred Tennyson author merges

I ended up rejecting one of your merges as the target got deleted by the other merge but then added a new merge to the queue so that both "Alfred Lord Tennyson" and "Alfred Tennyson, Lord" are merged into Lord Alfred Tennyson... Marc Kupper (talk) 22:19, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Oath of Swords

I have rejected your update to Oath of Swords as it contains updates to the contents section that would be difficult to undo/cleanup. For notes and help on changing the Contents section of a publication please see Help:Screen:EditPub#General contents and Help:How to change a story in a collection.

I believe you want to remove the Bug Park (Excerpt) item from the contents. If that's the case then from the publication record click on "Remove Titles From This Pub" on the left and you will be given a list of what's in the Contents section and can check those items that should be removed.

It also looks like you want to add the essay The Gods of Norfressa to the contents. That's done via Edit Publication which you used but then to click the [Add Title] button that's at the bottom of the existing contents list. If you fill in new data on top of one of the existing title records you are saying that you want to change that record.

For the record - Here's your previous submission so you can copy/paste as needed.

Added to verified

I added month to the date and noted as 2nd printing of your verified edition of Mirrlees' LUD-IN-THE-MISTDon Erikson 19:04, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Stochastic Man

Think I have found a signature on the cover of STCSTCMN1976 in the bottom left corner. Pretty sure the last name is Johnston or Johnson, but can't quite make out the first initial. Maybe your eyes can make it out? --Bluesman 03:28, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

I have the same edition and the signature does look like "Johnson", but I wouldn't bet my life on it. I also added the following note to the pub: "First printing as per the number line. Cover art not credited and the signature on the cover is almost illegible ("Johnson"?) "Fawcett World Library" on the back cover." Ahasuerus 03:05, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Collaborator

Thanks for adding Collaborator, which we somehow missed! I have added the Macmillan hardcover edition, a link to Wikipedia and a few other things. I also changed the publication date of the mass market paperback edition from 2003 to 2004-09-00: According to OCLC and Wikipedia, the hardcover came out in September 2003 and the paperback edition followed a year later, in September 2004. Ahasuerus 02:59, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Tales Before Tolkien

You added a new pub of this title, but it's very similar this one. Only yours has a different page count, which is inconsistent with the pagination of your contents. Please check it out. Thanks. MHHutchins 19:34, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Project Solar Sail

I have approved the addition of page numbers to Project Solar Sail, but had to reverse the change from Winston P. Sanders to Poul Anderson and do it using the add/remove/merge method. Please see Help:How to change a story in a collection for details. Thanks! Ahasuerus 23:34, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Antares Dawn

This. [1] . Added cover image and notations. If you have problems with this, please give a yell. Thanks, Harry. --Dragoondelight 13:33, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Magicat!

I rejected your submission which updated this printing. I believe you meant to clone it to create a new one, which I did here. Let me know if this agrees with your pub. Thanks. MHHutchins 05:12, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

Arabesques 2

I noticed you changed the title of the publication RBSQS1989 from Arabesques II to Arabesques 2. That is fine but I'm wondering if the title states Arabesques II anywhere in the publication. As your publication was the only edition listed under the title I changed the title to Arabesques 2 but am curious on the source for Arabesques II. -Marc Kupper|talk 21:01, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Author merge of Brian Thomsen into Brian M. Thomsen

I rejected the submitted merge of Brian Thomsen into Brian M. Thomsen. In ISFDB we credit authors as credited in the publications. This it's perfectly ok that you will see some stories under Brian Thomsen and others under Brian M. Thomsen. As these seem to be the same person we look at the bibliographies and other sources to decide which should be canonical. In this case I'd use Brian M. Thomsen as there are more stories under that name. It's a coincidence, but the top of my stack of books to verify next happens to be an anthology edited by Brian M. Thomsen. I double checked that and he uses Brian M. Thomsen consistently.

Once we have decided which name is canonical we go to the other one, Brian Thomsen in this case, and click on "Make This Author a Pseudonym" making the parent name Brian M. Thomsen.

The next part is more work but it involves going to each title for the pseudonym and making it a variant title. I usually check the parent name at, Brian M. Thompson in this case, to see if the parent name already exists and use the link-to-parent method if so. For titles that are parts of a series you also need to transfer the series designation to the new parent title. I went ahead and did this. -Marc Kupper|talk 02:35, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Sources for title updates

I'm processing your title updates where you are changing the dates. What sources are you using for the story dates? I'm guessing you have a copy of Tales Before Tolkien: The Roots of Modern Fantasy and are using the copyright page?

Here's the list of titles you updated so thwt we can update the source notes.

Please double check the author of Golithos the Ogre in your publication. You had this as E.A. Wyki-Smith but I'm pretty sure that's E. A. Wyke-Smith. -Marc Kupper|talk 04:59, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Idylls of the King and a Selection of Poems

I have some trouble seeing this as SF in any sense. Most of the poems (for example "Break, Break, Break", "In Memoriam A.H.H" and "Crossing the Bar") are clearly not SF, and so arguably shouldn't be listed, although there are exceptions. I have this on hold pending your response. -DES Talk 03:57, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Price changes

We are holding two submissions which change the price on verified pubs. My copy of They'd Rather be Right has a sticker of $5.95 over the original price (I haven't removed the sticker in order to see what is underneath, nor do I plan to.) Does you copy show any evidence of a sticker removal? Also my copy of The Best of Avram Davidson has a publisher's sticker over the jacket's printed price giving the price as $9.95. Does you copy have a clear printed price on the jacket (under "T.B.O.A.D.")? When I get a chance I'll pull out the issues of Locus to see what their listings show are the publishers' original listed price. Thanks. MHHutchins 05:32, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

I've approved the submission changing the price of The Best of Avram Davidson based on the Locus listing and the review in IASFM, August 1979. Still waiting for your response on the Clifton/Riley novel. Thanks. MHHutchins 06:51, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye: Five Fairy Stories

I approved the addition of the trade paperback edition of The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye: Five Fairy Stories earlier today, but then I noticed that the ISBN is invalid. Could you please double check your copy to see if there may have been a typo? TIA! Ahasuerus 19:45, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Pseudonym creation

I have rejected your submission which attempted to set up "J. Sheridan Le Fanu" as a pseudonym for "Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu". This pseudonym association already exists -- see the line about "Used As Alternate Name By" at the top of the http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?J._Sheridan_Le_Fanu page. Adding it multiple times doesn't help, we need to turn individual titles for "J. Sheridan Le Fanu" into variant titles under "Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu" instead. Once all titles have been converted to variant titles, this author record will appear as a pseudonym. Please see Help:How to record a pseudonym for details. Ahasuerus

Never in This world

Was about to do a transient on your verified pub NVRNWRLD561971 when I came across a small discrepancy between the copy I have and the verified record. The story "Look Out! Duck!" in the table of contents, acknowledgements and on the story title page only says Randall Garrett, with no mention anywhere of Daniel Gordon. Could you have a look at your copy before I change anything? Thanks. ~Bill, --Bluesman 15:07, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Sister Emily's Lightship and Other Stories

I approved your edits to Sister Emily's Lightship and Other Stories but reverted the change from "Memoirs of a Bottle Djinni" to "Memoirs of a Bottle Djinn" as it affects four titles, not just the one in that publication. Unless you can be sure that all four should be "Djinn" with no extra "i", please add the correct title and remove the incorrect one. BLongley 21:05, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Michael Bishop's No Enemy But Time

I added cover art to your verified pub of this title and added the "Spectra Special Editions" series to the pub notes, but wondered if you could recheck the publication date. Locus1 gives the month of publication as October 1989. Thanks. MHHutchins 01:18, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

The Stochastic Man

Added a cover image for STCSTCMN1976 and I can't find even a trace of a signature on my copy of the book. Sometimes the artwork gets shifted/clipped. Where on the cover do you see the signature? ~Bill, --Bluesman 00:37, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I added a bunch of different stuff to your verified THHLLWHLLS1974 based on my copy of the same edition and some things I ran into entering/verifying other books in the series. I found this image. I found a "Harry Benneth" signature in the lower right corner, along the fence rail, so I added him as the artist. I added "The Legend" and "Author's Note" as content -- these are in the other books, too, but the content is different; I thought calling them out as content specific to each book might be useful to someone someday. And I added notes about these things and the printing date. It added up to substantial additions, so let me know if you see any discrepancies with regard to your copy.
