Re: the proposed merge of "George Tomkyns Chesney" and "G. T. Chesney", I have checked Contento and it would appear that "The Battle of Dorking" has been published under both bylines. What's on the title page? Generally for publications like this I document in the notes all of the variants and their location in the publication. I'll list how the author name is spelled on the front cover, spine, title page, copyright page, and elsewhere. We enter what's on the title page in the "Author" field but I like to document the other names so that people will understand why this publication may be listed under other names on various web sites. You want to update publication 164381 and to change

I'm not sure why the existing publication record is not marked as "verified" but I believe it's accurate and should not be overwritten. If you have a copy of an earlier printing that is $5.99 then you should clone the existing record rather than overwriting data and to edit the clone. Since 1980 it's been common for publishers to keep the same ISBN as they reprint at a higher price meaning we will have multiple records in ISFDB for the same ISBN.

For example, Amazon.com 0345370775 has a Look Inside that shows a 24th printing for $7.99 and using this I cloned the publication you wanted to update and created 200157.

In general the rule is we should not need to overwrite information that's already in ISFDB though we often add data. For example, a publication my be stated in ISFDB as 1991-00-00 and your copy is 1991-12-00 in which case it's ok to "fill in the blanks." The only time I overwrite is if I can prove that the existing data is flat out wrong. Even in that case I often leave a publication note explaining what I overwrote and why so that if someone else comes along with the original source that created the incorrect data they can either chose the clone the record or update the notes.

One area that generally is safe to just overwrite is the page count as the count noted on Amazon is nearly always wrong (sometimes by hundreds of pages but usually about 10 pages too high as publishers count all of the pages including the unnumbered stuff that's before the story. The goal is one publication record per printing of the book though at the moment ISFDB does not have a printing number meaning the printing # is kept in the notes field for now. The project is complicated by the fact that editors generally will not have physical access to all editions meaning they will need to make "best judgment" calls on if an ISFDB record matches their publication or if they should add a new record. The rules I listed above are to help make this "best judgment" call. There are times when you can determine with a fair degree of confidence that something in ISFDB is wrong (or is a duplicate record) and should be deleted or overwritten. Sometimes I can't prove it's wrong as it's hard to find evidence of absence, particularly on the Internet where data gets copied from one site to the next. Again it's a judgment call and I've often added bibliographic notes explaining the research I did and the results (or lack of) trying to pin something down.

One thing I want to avoid would be “edit wars” where for example, one person enters a publication with a price of $7.99, and another has a $5.99 copy of the same publication, and figures whoever first entered the record is wrong and overwrites it. The verification system helps with this but often records are entered but not verified as the data is from a secondary, though presumed reliable, source.

You had written “…getting a handful of rejections on the grounds the entry is already in the database…” That’s not a problem – when I see a cloned pub I just check that it’s syntactically correct (formatting of the yyyy-mm-dd, currency symbol in front of the price, etc.) and either approve or approve/edit to correct any syntax errors. When editors update publications, as you did with Jurassic Park, I will hold them and research if significant fields are getting changed. Filling in the blanks is ok – changing fields other than the page count results in the publication getting held so I can understand if in fact the original data was wrong and should be overwritten. Lynn Abbey > Lynn Asprin

I don't believe that Lynn Abbey ever used the Lynn Asprin name, even though she was married to Robert [Lynn] Asprin at the time. An internet search came up empty. There are "Delete This Pub" and "Delete This Title" options in the navigation bar on the left on the Publication and Title pages respectively. You can submit a Publication deletion at any time if you are sure that it's bogus or a duplicate of another publication in the ISFDB. However, if you want to submit a Title deletion request, it will only go through if all associated Publications have been deleted first. Ahasuerus 06:30, 25 Jun 2007 (CDT)

The reason that I rejected it, is that the newer book should be listed as a variant of the older book, and you had them the other way around. I have fixed this, and they should now be ok. Space Cadet

I have approved the changes to the 1987 edition of Space Cadet, but I was wondering about the cover and the price. The cover has an "SBN" as opposed to an ISBN, which suggests that it was printed back in the early-to-mid 1970s. The price, $5.99, is rather high for a 1987 mass market paperback. Unknowns

Thanks for updating the unknowns, but is there any chance you can do a bit more with each edit than just update the author? I agree that the records with reasonable ISBNs should probably be kept for a bit till we figure out why he had them here (the "999" prefix pubs can probably be zapped instantly instead), but looking at a few of your examples it seems clear that you could be updating "tp" format to "pb" with a couple of clicks more research, for instance. Maybe even find the coverart. I'm not sure if you're working with known other publications or just recognising titles? BLongley 14:14, 7 Aug 2007 (CDT)
Of course, if you just want to increase your total contributions score by doing it in multiple passes, that's fine, it just makes more work for the moderators. And it can be easier to check whether a pub is a duplicate AFTER sorting it under the correct author - but most of your updates will still need a title merge or update before the possible duplicates end up under the same author and same title. I also appreciate your trying to clean up the "unknowns", but there are still several steps needed to make the pubs integral to the database. For example, here's one of the pubs for which you provided an author. First, the TITLE REFERENCE still refers to a title without an author. You may also notice that the ISBN doesn't match Tor. A quick look on The OCLC Fictionfinder website will reveal the following:

So it wasn't a trade paperback published by Tor in 1988, but a mass-market paperback (18 cm) published by Ace in 1983. I personally feel that the time and extra steps required to clean up one pub is worth more to the database than cleaning up a lot of "unknowns". And I feel uncomfortable approving these updates knowing that the pubs are sitting in limbo, until someone else comes along and completes the job. I'm not sure how agressive to be about these. Those I'm pretty confident contain no information at all not already in the existing records I've been trying to mark for deletion, but I'm reluctant to make changes when it looks like there could be information there that I'd be overwriting. After all unlikely as it seems there *could* be both an Ace and Tor edition of Spacepaw. Well, actually, both Ace and Tor have published editions of Spacepaw. The example I provided was to point out that the pub record that you updated was an amalgamation of two different publications. I'd rather that this pub sat in "unknown" limbo until it can be completely cleaned up than to have it merged with the title records on Dickson's summary page. Yes, it does take several steps to clean up these pubs, but whether you correct the title records or the publication records first doesn't matter. After those have been done you can then merge the title records with any pre-existing titles.

For those pubs that your research has shown to have duplicates already in the database, please feel free to continue deleting them. I'd bet that that alone would clean up at least half of the "unknowns" in the database. Thanks for your continuing efforts. Mhhutchins 22:10, 11 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Along the same lines, there are LOT of these that consist of nothing but a title, a malformed ISBN beginning with a string of 9s, a publisher, and the format tp. Many of these titles are recognizable, and when looked up exist in releases from the indicated publisher with about the same date, but in pb. Arguably these could be considered useful data, indicating a trade paper release exists that is not otherwise in the database, so I've been leaving them where there seemed any real chance such a release might exist. But my feeling is they're probably all errors and I'm thinking about marking them for deletion. Anybody have a strong opinion otherwise?--MA Lloyd 10:45, 13 Aug 2007 (CDT)

You already known my view on the subject, but I'd like to know what other moderators and editors think. These records were probably generated by a program that spidered the WWW looking for ISBNs. "Death to Dissembler", then? I'm not sure I'd go that far, but there's always room for improvement. I saw Al release another set of Dissembler submissions at the weekend, and got to look at a few before he approved them all: I didn't see any "999" ISBNs added (although I didn't get to see many in detail) but did notice that there were some un-regularised Authors. (I was a bit annoyed as I'd spent a couple of hours fixing some of those, hence my massive number of author updates and merges.) Tim F. Lahaye / Tim LaHaye merge

I don't think we should merge these if books are being published under both names. I looked up "Tim F. Lahaye" and saw several books attributed to that name in the OCLC and Amazon. Perhaps we should make one name the canonical name and the other a pseudonym. Any other moderators want to join in the discussion? Michael is quite right, if an individual has used more than one form of his or her name, e.g. "Robert A. Heinlein" and "Robert Heinlein", then we make the most frequently used form the "canonical name" and all other permutations are entered as pseudonyms. Ahasuerus 04:41, 11 Aug 2007 (CDT)

Andre Norton's Victory on Janus

You wanted to merge this record with this one. Which would be OK if the pub in the first title record was a good pub. But you state yourself that the ISBN is incorrect. You can also see that there's already a pub of this title in the database published by Ballantine in the same year, which can be verified by Locus. As I stated above, until these "unknown" pubs have been cleaned, it's doesn't help the database by merging them with existing titles. I approved these two submissions, then went back and checked their prices. $7.50 and $6.95 appear to be a little high for 2000 and 1990, respectively. Since it's been 3 months since the original submission, I went ahead and did some additional research re: The Mezentian Gate. Based on online sources, it looks like the original Ballantine edition appeared in 1969 and the reprint that you submitted was published in 1978. OK, I approved the merges but as you can see now (hopefully), some publications are just duplicates and could just have been deleted: tidying up the authors a bit faster. Also, as Author-Merges are potentially one of the most destructive edits allowed, it's good to talk to some Mods first - I guess I've done as much checking as you did, but getting to talk a bit more does help. The Queen of Zamba

What is the length of the story entitled "The Queen of Zamba"? It looks be be novel length and I wonder if it is the same as the previously published version of the same title. I am also wondering whether these two stories were combined for the previous version. I don't moderate books that often but I know it can be hard to determine whether patched together stories should be considered a single novel or a collection.--swfritter 14:20, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

This edition was the first to contain the author's preferred text of the novel previously published as Cosmic Manhunt and A Planet Named Krishna. In addition to the novel (with the same title as the 1949 serial in ASF) this edition includes the novelette "Perpetual Motion". The 1983 Ace edition is a reprint of this collection but its record currently doesn't reflect that. So to answer your question, the entry type of The Queen of Zamba should be NOVEL, and it should be merged with the current title (novel as well). Then there would be two separate titles with this name: the novel and the collection. You could reject MA Lloyd's current submission, and have him make another submission. Or accept it and make the corrections. Or I could do it, if you prefer. I hope my 2-cents doesn't come across as interference between you and the editor. Thanks. Mhhutchins 15:50, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

ISBNs

I've accepted your changes but am going to edit this pub. We don't need TWO reference numbers in the same field, so "#02244 SBN 345-02244-0-095" is a bit over the top. It's fine to leave such in notes, explaining where each reference was used, but you can actually derive the proper full ISBN from such: the "-095" is the price, leaving you with "345-02244-0" : and until recently, just adding a "0" in front of a stated SBN (for English language publications) usually gets the correct one. You can Amazon search (Or AbeBooks, or Alibris, or any other good book-seller site) to check. Or even a tool a fellow editor here created - Marc's ISBN finder is pretty useful. More recent pubs may need a "1" in front instead (still for English language pubs) as they started running out of SBNs, and nowadays the 13-digit version is the norm (and we're not quite ready for that here yet, unfortunately) - but please do try and find the 10-digit ISBN when you can, it helps with the Links to Amazon or Powells or Books-A-Million for a start. The second problem is again with your content entry: "Introduction by Lin Carter" in notes is informative, but you can enter it more usefully with an ESSAY type named "Introduction (Book Title)" and Author "Lin Carter". That makes it findable from Lin Carter's page: adding the title in brackets helps distinguish it from all the other Introductions he's done. BLongley 15:46, 9 Oct 2007 (CDT)

The Complete Compleat Enchanter

Just to let you know that I have approved your The Complete Compleat Enchanter submission and then changed it from a Collection to an Omnibus as per the Help pages:

A publication may be classified is an omnibus if it contains multiple works that have previously been published independently, and at least one of them is a novel.

In this case, The Castle of Iron is a novel (expanded in 1950 from an eponymous 1940 novella), so the rule applies, although cases where there is only one novel included tend to be a gray area. The omnibus designation is slightly better when dealing with multiple entries belonging to the same series since you can then use "/1,2,3,4,5" to show the Omnibus contents on the Summary page -- see the current state of de Camp's bibliography. Nine Hundred Grandmothers

I see that you have submitted the contents of the 1982 Ace edition of Lafferty's Nine Hundred Grandmothers. Since we already had a previous edition of this collection on file (even the page numbers were the same), there was no need to re-enter all that data -- you could have used the Clone option instead. That way the probability of data entry errors and typos is minimized and we don't have to merge the newly entered stories with the pre-existing ones. City by Simak

You submitted a new publication of City. But you linked to the title record for "City" the first shortfiction work that went into the longer work, rather than to the title record for City, the collection or fixup.

As to its being a fixup, my memory is that the separate sections retained their titles, so i would be inclined to call it a collection, as our existing records do. In any case it is not an anthology, having only one author.

Also, your submission looks like a near duplicate of either this record, except that the record has tp while you have pb for binding type, or of this record except that the ISBN is different by one digit. ISBNdb.com and amazon.com list both as mass-market pb editions, one from 1981 and one from 1983. My thought is to use your data to update one of these, probably this record. However, i await your response. I have the submission on hold.

I have the same edition and the signature does look like "Johnson", but I wouldn't bet my life on it. I also added the following note to the pub: "First printing as per the number line. Author merge of Brian Thomsen into Brian M. Thomsen

I rejected the submitted merge of Brian Thomsen into Brian M. Thomsen. In ISFDB we credit authors as credited in the publications. This it's perfectly ok that you will see some stories under Brian Thomsen and others under Brian M. Thomsen. As these seem to be the same person we look at the bibliographies and other sources to decide which should be canonical. In this case I'd use Brian M. Thomsen as there are more stories under that name. It's a coincidence, but the top of my stack of books to verify next happens to be an anthology edited by Brian M. Thomsen. I double checked that and he uses Brian M. Thomsen consistently.

Once we have decided which name is canonical we go to the other one, Brian Thomsen in this case, and click on "Make This Author a Pseudonym" making the parent name Brian M. Thomsen.

The next part is more work but it involves going to each title for the pseudonym and making it a variant title. I usually check the parent name at, Brian M. Thompson in this case, to see if the parent name already exists and use the link-to-parent method if so. For titles that are parts of a series you also need to transfer the series designation to the new parent title. I went ahead and did this. -Marc Kupper|talk 02:35, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Price changes

We are holding two submissions which change the price on verified pubs. My copy of They'd Rather be Right has a sticker of $5.95 over the original price (I haven't removed the sticker in order to see what is underneath, nor do I plan to.) Does you copy show any evidence of a sticker removal? Also my copy of The Best of Avram Davidson has a publisher's sticker over the jacket's printed price giving the price as $9.95. Does you copy have a clear printed price on the jacket (under "T.B.O.A.D.")? Pseudonym creation

I have rejected your submission which attempted to set up "J. Sheridan Le Fanu" as a pseudonym for "Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu".
