Methuen Publishing Ltd was founded in 1889 by Sir Algernon Methuen and began publishing in London in 1892. It published under the name 'Methuen & Co.' early in the twentieth century, and by 1918 had begun publishing under the name 'Methuen & Co. Ltd'. For much of the 1970s it was known as Eyre Methuen following its absorption of Eyre & Spottiswoode.

Usual ISBN Prefix 0413, with 04137 usually reserved for Plays (Methuen Drama). 0416 prefix books attributed to "London: Methuen" seem to be more child-orientated and were probably actually published under an imprint such as Pied Piper or Magnet.
