Methuen Publishing Ltd was founded in 1889 by Sir Algernon Methuen and began publishing in London in 1892. For much of the 1970s it was known as Eyre Methuen following its absorption of Eyre & Spottiswoode.

Usual ISBN Prefix 0413, with 04137 usually reserved for Plays (Methuen Drama). 0416 prefix books attributed to "London: Methuen" seem to be more child-orientated and were probably actually published under an imprint such as Pied Piper or Magnet.
