Methuen Publishing Ltd was founded in 1889 by Sir Algernon Methuen and began publishing in London in 1892. It published under the name 'Methuen & Co.' early in the twentieth century, and by 1918 had begun publishing under the name 'Methuen & Co. Ltd'. For much of the 1970s it was known as Eyre Methuen following its absorption of Eyre & Spottiswoode.
